This recording is very special to us. Two hours of sonic bliss from our dear friend Avsluta recorded at the Stone Circle stage at Above Below 2023. As a long-standing resident of the Beacon stage, it was exciting to see how Avsluta would take control of the Stone Circle after she proposed a UK-Bass set early this spring. 

Needless to say, it was easy to see why she wanted to explore this avenue of sound. Avsluta weaved her way through various shades of bass music, expertly intertwining rhythm and groove with the deep atmospheric touch that she is known for. 

As the weekend came to a close and the timeless memories started to settle in, we grew evermore eager to share some of the magic that occurred down in the valley. Hopefully, this mix will help convey a snapshot of the blissful moments experienced over the three days.

Avsluta | AB23 | Stone Circle

An invisible city with silicon cathedrals, a tangerine sky and an ever-flowing current of microscopic lifeforms suddenly becomes visible. Such visions of hyperfuturistic phantasmagoria solidified in tone are somewhat of a specialty for our next guest. Plant43 aka Emile Facey is a name synonymous with some of the most consistent electro records of the past 20 years. Besides his track "Eclipse Season" on the second Unrush compilation, Emile has carved out his own niche of bubbling basslines and synth mastery on many notable labels such as Frustrated Funk, CPU, Semantica as well as his own Plant43 Recordings. What makes his music so engaging is his deep sensibility for atmosphere and gifted ear for experimentation, making him a perfect candidate for an Unrush mix. Unfolding with a Glass-like minimalism and patience, this hour of syntropic serotonin is sure to inject your mind into a placid, otherwordly place within the matrix.

Timnah signature approach to earthy dance music has been tried, tested and approved by swinging hips all over Europe. Developing her style from age 17 onwards, when she started playing in squats and industrial spaces around Basel, she’s continuously making her mark with warm, reverberating techno cuts from across the spectrum. During her residencies at Hinterhof Bar and Elysia, Timnah‘s sets fluently cover (and transcend) shades of techno, experimental and ambient music, establishing her as a firm favourite amongst dancers and peers. Smooth mixing skills, strong emotional narratives and an intuitive understanding of dancefloor dynamics continue to define her style, seamlessly cruising through the small hours of the night.

Back in April we invited Alfonso to perform an extended set, starting in the early afternoon till sunset.

So excited to welcome BLNDR to the series, a long-awaited delight after observing the French producer develop his magnetic and kaleidoscopic sound over the years. BLNDR's mix is glimmering and atmospheric, reflective of the patient and meticulous nature inhabiting his work as both BLNDR and his more-recent Traevor alias. Voiced in a heartfelt tone and assembled with a poet's touch, this set is a soft yet spry landing to an intense season, breathing a new air, fluttering to a new rhythm, earnest to the very end. I enjoyed this one immensely and I hope you will too. Thanks Tom!

Enigmatic producer and DJ Aa Sudd (Vector Trancer) explores the more hypnotic and alluring realms of sound. Based in Germany, he delves into irregular rhythms, immersive atmospheres and kaleidoscopic patterns, transmitting his sound via labels such as Midgar or Mirror Zone. With a focus on the captivating and the otherworldly, Aa Sudd delivers enveloping sets and productions, fusing elements of techno and experimental drum and bass to create a psychedelic listening experience.

Aa Sudd collaborated with artist Konduku to form the project “Konsudd” releasing their first EP on the closely connected swiss label Amenthia Recordings (Garçon, Timnah, Agonis) in late 2022.

This summer, Monochrome is offering each month to one or several artists to discover their influences and inspirations through a forty-five minute to two hour recording. These three recordings will focus on percussive rhythms between Ambient, Deep Techno and Drum & Bass.

Artist biography :
Avsluta is a London-based sound artist, DJ, live performer and curator. While her output is diverse in both her live performances and DJ sets alike, it most often taps into the realms of ambient, downtempo, UK-bass and leftfield techno, navigating the in-betweens of ambient and dance music.
Lucie runs Introspective Electronics, a platform featuring regular radio shows and guest podcast series zooming in on the vast diversity of ambient and electronica. Together with the London-based DJ and producer Alicia, she co-curates Terra Obscura, a series of progressive club experiences at the grassroots London venue Ormside Projects. In collaboration with AMOENUS, she co-organises Sonic Garden, a series of outdoor experimental ambient and downtempo happenings.

Let's welcome back our dearest @cafe-de-la-jungle to the thirteenth episode of our Herbarium mix series. We are still swaying in hot memory of our recent QEONE x On Board Music night at OHM Berlin and feel that this mix mirrors some bits of his groovy side which he presented back then.

What he says about the connection between this plant and his mix: 
The monstera plant's ability to thrive in the rich variety of the jungle, from shadowy undergrowth to sunlit clearings, mirrors my versatile view of electronic music inside the mixtape. Just as the monstera effortlessly adjusts to its surroundings, my mix weaves a sonic journey that spans an array of electronic music genres, from the slow dubby beginning thru more high-energy rhythms towards the melodic end. 
The plant’s adaptability and resilience find reflection in the the mixtape's capacity to traverse musical terrains, providing listeners with a multifaceted journey through the electronic music jungle.

My name’s Lucie (she/her) and I live deeeep in South London. 

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 & 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝? 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬…
This set was originally recorded at Goo Night in Spanners, a snug, intimate venue in South East London. Imagine a roomful of free, sweaty bodies moving to the rhythm, surrounded by dense red-tinted haze. The atmosphere was sexy and sticky that night. 

A little disclaimer regarding the recording. I had to re-record the second part of the set at home due to sound quality but the essence of it is in no way compromised 🙂

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?
I wanted to put together a set focusing on spaciousness and the interplay between heady depth and liberating playfulness, exploring ways in which the two can meaningfully coexist. The idea was to allow the audience to release their body fully on the dancefloor so obviously there had to be a good amount of energy running through the veins of the set. But at the same time, I really wanted to tickle their minds, open doors to imagination, introduce depth so if one really listens in, there is a whole world of sonic magic to explore - a complexity both sonic and emotional. 

+ 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮r 𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐛𝐨𝐱 / 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐠?
The process always starts with digging for new music that sets the tone for the playlist or when packing my record bag. I look for a specific flavour of sounds for each gig, thinking about the context in which I will be playing and trying to understand what possible directions I can take. 

Once I select those fresh tracks, I start building the rest of the playlist around it, first more generally and as I listen back with the set approaching, I keep refining it until it feels like it has enough substance. At the same time, I make sure it is generous enough so I can cover a lot of ground if the gig goes in a different direction than what I expected. It’s always a balance of keeping one’s artistic integrity while working with the crowd to create a powerful experience for everyone.

Terra Obscura is a collaborative event I run together with my close friend Alicia. We started the series back in March 2022 at Ormside Project which is still our home to this day. Me and Alicia have an impressive overlap in terms of music taste but we are also quite good at challenging each other's ideas which I believe is important for a healthy growth of any project. We are both into a lot of deep, intricate music within the ambient & downtempo, techno, breaks & bass realm to give you a very rough idea about our programming. 

When we are building a line-up, we always throw around a lot of names and then try to find a common thread among the artists we want to book. We imagine how their sound would work in a particular slot and how their sets would flow into each other so there is a sense of development throughout the night. This process is usually quite long but in some ways really intuitive. 

What is very important for us is to approach the event as a whole, a night that effortlessly moves forward along a curatorial narrative, one step at a time from the start to the very end, moving from horizontal ambient to sweaty dance as it progresses.
