Austin-via-Galveston TX guitarist/vocalist/sound artist Shawn David McMillen has been on the periphery of whatever US underground thing you’re supposed to give a fuck about for the better part of the last decade; he’s released a couple of terrific solo albums for New York’s Tompkins Square label, logged time in Austin’s power-psych demolition artists Rubble, appeared on split recordings alongside Jack Rose, Steve Gunn and Pete Walker, collaborated with Charalambidies’ Tom Carter…I mean, is that enough to make you wonder if you’ve missed the boat yet? No?  

‘On The Clock WIth JJ & Mitch’ is McMillen’s first new album since 2010’s ‘Dead Friends’ and represents his most straight-up electric rock effort to date. Recorded in NYC last spring by Grey Datura’s Robert Mayson and assisted by the crack rhytm team of drummer JJ Ruiz (Trustees, Naw Dude, Teeners, Air Traffic Controllers) and bassist Mitch Fraizer (Sweet Talk, Church Shoes), ‘On The Clock’ represents the-Shawn-is-ready-for-his-closeup moment lovers of expansive guitar work have waited for very patiently.  McMillen and band (who’ve recently seen Ruiz switch to bass and former Strange Boys/OBN III’s drummer Matt Hammer take over the drums) have a lean & mean take on established forms that make a mockery of alleged levitation festivals and those with lower than low musical standards.

The population of Greater Mexico City is 21.3 million, and not surprisingly it's made up of people from all over the world. The weather, food, culture, and affordability rival any city on planet earth. La Redada are six of those people and they are from all over the globe as well. Three Mexicans, Two Chileans, and one European make a psychedelic tropical sound that pulls from decades of Latin America music -- also I'm pretty sure I heard a Joe Meek chorus when I saw them live?

When I moved to Mexico City in 2017 I didn't know a soul. Anhelo Escalante from XYX suggested checking out a DJ called Tropic Aza. His set blew my mind and he told me he was a drummer in a band. The first time I was able to see La Redada I asked if we could release something. Amazing stuff and I think you will dig it.

My linux won't boot so I'm presently forced to use Windows, and because of the bug in Soundcloud's system my account is all messed up when I don't use a VPN to connect which I am unable to do now... trying to get help from my VPN provider.  Because of this, and because I started working very long days I will be less present here.  Sorry, I'm trying.

Ever since the closing of this account by error by SC two or three months ago, this problem has remained unfixed.  Soundcloud and their AI are apparently still working on solving this and other problems with this account, and with my other account ; )

What I wrote below was heart felt but presumptuous and pretentious.  I would have to not be stupid myself to be allowed to claim such a thing.  More importantly though, I don't believe it is correct or accurate.  These people are probably not stupid but just don't care.  Justice is a collective thing and many if not most people seem to live in bubbles.  It is perhaps economic oppression which is responsible, they just don't have the resources, the time, the energy to be concerned about what lies behond that bubble.  It used to be fine but there's this thing they call globalization which makes this increasingly impractical or impossible.

mid January 2024:
Justice and vengeance are not the same.  Apparently most people are too stupid to see the difference.  Unfortunately it is not something unique to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and not unique to group conflicts.

What happened to intelligence?  Aren't we supposed to be the "intelligent" specie.
