@joeynegro continues to cement his place in the annals of disco‘s rich history with the release of a new version of his hit record ‘Must Be The Music’: a track that has been given a complete overhaul from its original incarnation.

Originally released in 1999 and featuring Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) on vocals, ‘Must Be The Music’ was a hit in every sense of the word. Released by the Subliminal label, it was a one of the rare records to make the transition from club mainstay to genuine pop hit, eventually breaking into the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Now completely reworked by Joey Negro himself, the record has been totally transformed and given a new lease of life as a shimmering disco anthem in the vein of disco demigods Chic and Change. 

“The only thing that remains from the original record is the chorus backing vocals. All the drums, music and verse vocals from Dianne Charlamagne are new. The original sounds a little dated to me now: it’s too fast and has that filtered sound that worked in the 90s and still seems to find favour in some quarters, but for me is tired.

“Because it was a hit I often get asked to play it when I DJ, so I thought it would be cool to do a radically different remake my own song, produce a new version I could play in my sets alongside original disco and the new music I’m making now.” Joey Negro

This new version of ‘Must Be The Music’ is taken from the forthcoming Joey Negro album Produced With Love. Described by DJ Mag as “his latest masterpiece…this is feel-good, love-inspired classic disco for the 21st Century” and as “sunshine in aural form” by Mixmag, this is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released – and the first for more than 20 years. The overwhelming majority of music included was newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to modern disco and indicative of the level of care and attention that has been poured into the project.

When Mike Dunn released his Classic Music Company debut ‘My House From All Angles’ last year, the album was met with critical acclaim, The Guardian writing: “God may have made him funky, but Mike Dunn has kept it going ever since.” Now, two stand out cuts from the LP are given the remix treatment, enlisting some of the label’s closest cohorts to re-work these two irresistible hip-house jams. Up first, Peppermint Jam boss Mousse T. opens the release, weaving in his signature bouncy melodies and funk-flavoured grooves into ‘If I Can’t Get Down’. Up next, Classic label-mate and house expert Oliver Dollar brings in a raw, edgier sound on his Boomty Mix of ‘DJ Beat That Shhh’, with an aptly bumping bassline. Classic label boss Luke Solomon provides his Clubland Remix of ‘If I Can’t Get Down’ next, enlisting funky guitar riffs and energetic percussion. In times of trouble and uncertainty music can provide great relief for the soul, and DAVIE’s triumphant Defected debut ‘Testify’ does exactly that.
