I would describe my sound as an interpretation of African electronics - my approach is to capture what I call an Afrofuturist vision pushing the boundaries with an aim to expand the pallet of African electronic . 
 
 
*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 
 
I’m an always on the lookout for new and inspiring ideas whether it’s music or just a great conversation. Life is inspiring enough on its own. My family, my friends and my fellow artists inspire me . Where I grew up and where I live currently brings a source of inspiration.
 
*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*
 
What I wanted to capture with this mix is a mood and journey that explores all parts of who I am as an artist and DJ. My sound is evolving but yet quite a unique take on electronic music. I have added original music from 8 years ago to modern stuff that I’ve done recently including from remixes to edits. I think the audience will have a sense of my style as producer and my vision as an Afro futurist.

Anyone who's seen http://soundcloud.com/tillvonsein DJ will attest to what an excellent selector the Berlin talent is. His productions see him jump from his house music core to hip-hop and R&B-influenced downtempo jams and all inbetween, and have helped him to build up a formidable discography. Part of the SUOL family run by Chopstick & Johnjon that flies the flag for German house music, he's also graced the likes of Pets Recordings, Dirt Crew and Supplement Facts and continues to push a resolute quality-not-quantity ethos. Touching on his myriad soul, disco and funk influences across this retrospective mix that spans five years of productions, he brings his musical world to life in vivid colours.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Well, that's always a tough one. I would always call it house music. Sometimes deep, sometimes funky, sometimes soulful and sometimes tech or even progressive but in the end it´s always house...
but besides that there is always some R&B, some dub, dope beats and some electronica-inspired productions. I guess I'm not that typical stick-to-one-genre kinda artist.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Travels, friends, music.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I never tried playing live or putting a mix of only my own tracks together so this is a new experience for me. It's kinda hard to just find the perfect balance within 60 minutes sometimes, and it's even harder when it has to be only your own material and it's the first time you ever try it.

One of our favourite producers of 2022 steps up with an exclusive 64 minutes of almost entirely unreleased material. Parisian producer @tour-maubourg has released an remarkable body of work in the past couple of years that connects the dots between his city's deep house and nu jazz heritage (e.g. St-Germain, Wuz, Cassius) and the contemporary jazz scene, where sumptuous 4/4 grooves and broken beats are laced with sweet vintage and analog synth solos and motifs. We predict the biggest things for him and are very happy to have him contribute to our long-running series.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I’m trying to produce modern music, mainly house, jazz, and dub related with an old school and warm feel.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

If I had to name three main influences it would be Ron Trent and Chez Damier, for their vision and reflection on pushing forward the sound.

Basic channel for their exploration of texture and ambience. Their sound has a unique feel.

Nicolas Jaar for his abilities to touch the masses with non pop music. His ability to make complexity simpler so that anyone can understand his music.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I was very happy that it was only made out of my production. As I have tons of music I stick that will probably not be released, it’s a good way to take it out of my hard drive and give it a second life 🙏

Slowly but surely, Berlin-based English producer @athlete-whippet's sumptuous sounds have charmed the house and disco world. With serious musical chops backing up his dance floor grooves, it's no wonder Toy Tonics have snapped him up to be part of their family, and his work continues to become ever-more sophisticated and infectious. He treats us to some works-in-progress in the mix alongside some of his tastiest morsels to date.


*How would you describe your sound?*

It’s sort of ever evolving but I’d say the thing that always plays a big role is that it’s very much a hybrid between club music and songwriting. I come from a background of playing in bands to production, and DJing was actually the last piece of the puzzle for me.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Many, many people and things. These days I’ve come back to composing my songs on instruments rather than in the box and started singing a lot more again. I’m also so fortunate to be part of a wonderful scene of artists between Berlin and London which is a constant inspiration.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s been a nice chance to delve back into things from the early days, something that I rarely ever do. I’ve started off with new stuff from recent records which represents my sound now, and then as I build up the confidence, I go into some current work in progress somewhere in the middle before going back to the very roots at the end.

We are not worthy! A big scalp for us here at Monologues as we invite one of our all-time favourite production outfits to contribute to the series. This '92-'24 retrospective from one of the mightiest names in house features unreleased Gabriels + Usher remix exclusives and a special edit of 'Lazy' exclusive to this mix. *How would you describe your sound?*

Our sound is for the dancefloor. Pure and simple. Whether that's the back room of a pub in Colnbrook or a huge mega tech rave in Mexico.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I guess it's all sorts of music that's influenced us over the years. Going way back to tribal music through Blues, jazz, rnb, reggae, soul, disco, house, techno, classical etc etc. We always go back to early house stuff if we're ever stuck in the studio. Just get back to the raw basics and go again!

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

This '92224' mix is basically a snap shot of some of the stuff that we, with Ashley for a huge chunk of it, have done or been involved with over the years. From our very first production together ('Muzik Xpress') bang up to the minute with our soon-to-be-released Gabriels remix. Getting this mix together has made me appreciate just how much we've done and makes me feel very proud of what 3 lads from west London have achieved musically. Listening back to it there's definitely a thread that runs through this 32 years of music and I think that hopefully, you can hear those answers to the first 2 questions contained within.

@serge-santiago's productions are always dead-certs when it comes to moving a dancefloor. For nearly 25 years now he's been putting out a consistent slew of heavy house music and Italo revivalism which was some 20 years ahead of the curve in terms of reappraising the genre (and which provided major inspiration to Bicep from the looks of their early YouTube uploads of vinyl rips). Aside from his solo material, he was also one half of the original iteration of Radio Slave and also of Waze & Odyssey. Entering a new purple patch in the last couple of years through his output on his Jack Said What label (co-owned by house hero Steve Mac and none other than Scottish author, Irvine Welsh), he's been a mainstay in my record box of late and I'm delighted to have him mix an hour of his own productions for us here on Monologues.

*How would you describe your sound?*

It's always an interesting question. My sound is under-produced jams. Muddy rollers. Music with dust on. Not techno, B-sides, Track 2. Room 2. Sampled. 40+. Anything it shouldn't be. 

 
*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I'm very much into the late '80s US disco and house era. When house was new and dirty, with messy productions. Gritty drum patterns. Heavy samples. I love Italo influenced 4/4 also. It's something about the synth and piano tones they used for the underground dance scene. Magic to me!

 
*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It means I worked hard to get a sound and my message across. It’s the sound I love listening to and thinking about. Something off the beaten track. Myself and friends have been running a club night for the last 25+ years in Brighton called Stompa Phunk, this mix is the set, sounds and inspiration from the night. It’s something I'm proud I've done.

Pushing a super soulful, highly musical house and disco vibe on labels like Delusions Of Grandeur, B2 Recordings and Spa In Disco, Greek producer @lex-athens has really caught my ear in the last couple of years with his wonderful productions. Enjoy an hour of his own glorious, sun-drenched productions, including plenty of unreleased goodies.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I think there's a blend of quite a few different styles in my music so it’s a bit hard to describe it. In my ears I hear a psychedelic funkiness with a soulful balearism, if I could say in one sentence. But I think it’s a bit more than that, I mean I could use so many other words also. I am also a bit confused to be honest :)

The thing that I am quite certain though is that there is a lot of emotion, euphoria and positivity in my music, created with lots of organic action.     

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

As usual, my first contact with music was from my father’s record collection and what he was playing on the turntable. That was mostly rock, disco, blues, classical and some eclectic Greek music to name a few. I am sure that those years inspired and influenced me subconsciously the most.

Apart of that there was also an early trance/rave period that played its part but I think the general late-'90s early-'00s US house period was the one that finally inspired and influenced me the most consciously.

There are really so many names to mention, for all these periods, that it's really very hard to pick just a few.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s the first mix I do with only tracks of mine so I am very excited. Also curious and a little nervous to see if people will like it. I approached the more housey side of me and there are lots of unreleased stuff in it, even unsigned.

*How would you describe your sound?*

It’s funk, disco and house. Percussion is one of the most essential elements in our music! But I also would describe it as summery with the goal that people feel good and want to dance. 

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

We are inspired by so many music and artists. You can hear that in the diversity of our tracks. We are inspired by African music, jazz but also funk, disco and house classics.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix shows the different approaches of our productions we did so far. From live band sound and originals, to remixes and edits.

First emerging on Tiefschwarz’s Souvenir imprint in 2009, Adam Port’s prolific, consistent output has made him one of the new German house music generation’s most in-demand figures. His eclectic take on the genre draws in influences from far and wide, with samples and edits key elements of his body of work.

Releases on liebe*detail, Rockets & Ponies, Play It Down, Moon Harbour and Cocoon show his versatility, while his Keinemusik imprint which he runs with Rampa, &ME, Reznik and David Mayer continues to grow as a force to be reckoned with.

*How do you describe your sound?*

House.

*Who and what inspires you and influences your sound?*

I think all music that is surrounding me like rock ‘n’ roll, reggae, new rap artists and also dance music I like to play in my DJ sets.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and the idea behind it?*

I tried to make a good balance between my old and new tracks. Doing this kind of mix was a great view on all my work from 2009 till now. I'm really happy to see that i'm very satisfied with all my releases.

After nearly 12 years of inviting other artists to mix episodes of Monologues — my mix series where producers mix an hour of their own productions — I've finally decided to do one myself. Celebrating the release of my debut album 'Collapsing Time', this mix looks back on some of my favourite productions from my catalogue, focusing on the music that complements the sound of the album best.

*How would you describe your sound?*

A mess! Scattershot diversity, focused around groove and melody in the house arena.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Basement Jaxx, X-Press 2, Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk, Eric Prydz, Todd Terje, the Balearic ethos, early Andrew Weatherall and Paul Oakenfold, classic progressive house, my musical friends, travelling, psychology and the club scene.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It's the music I've produced over my 16 years in the game that fits best with the sound of my album 'Collapsing Time' — e.g. melancholy '80s/'90s-leaning housey stuff with a lot of pianos.

The crown prince of Germany's Italo/Electro scene takes the reins for our latest mix. *How would you describe your sound?*
Dance music between Italo, House, Electro, Synth, Rave, Acid and a little Techno .. mostly leaning towards 80ies sound.. maybe

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 
I guess listening to music since being a kid and one specific and very forming influence was DJ Ata in the early days of the  Robert Johnson Club .. I guess that place in general.. i spent so many nights there.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*
My first 12" release came out 25 years ago ..and when i stumbled across your idea (from a few years back) to record a 100% Lauer music mix i thought: now is the time !   I tried to cover most periods featuring  some personal faavourites of mine.. and some "hits" ..  Its a bit random .. but  i feel it is a good representation of what   i did in the last years... hehe

The impressively consistent @burninmusic is the work of France-born, London-based hustler @pegasvs. Lovingly curated and accompanied by high-quality artwork, their releases have made their way into the boxes of some of the most respected names in the scene, and his own output on the label has impressed more with each release. He's packed his mix full of unreleased exclusives, from deep to acid to broken beat - one of which we've picked up to release on Monologues Records later this year...

*How would you describe your sound?*

I make raw, club-ready house music. The values I try to convey through my sound are freedom, rhythm and craft.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I am inspired by a few key figures in house music: Kerri Chandler, Larry Heard, Ron Trent. Those people influence my sound but I am also influenced by my own experiences: going out clubbing, my daily life in London, running a record label, being a dad... ll those experiences shape my music. I believe that, whether you like it or not, our surroundings, friends, education....  everything we go through on a day-to-day basis as humans, this go straight in the big pot of Creativity. It is part of our output. Consciously or not...

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

For  the first time, thanks to this mix, I had to go through my past projects. I spent quite a long time listening back to almost all finished projects in my hard drive and chose the ones that meant something to me. It's been a wonderful process and I am really happy with the result. Big thanks to Ben for inviting me to record that mix.

Viennese don Peter Kruder’s gradual metamorphosis from king of downtempo to purveyor of classy house and techno was perhaps one of the more unexpected shifts amongst electronic luminaries of last few decades, but it has not been in vain. 

His work as half of Kruder & Dorfmeister soundtracked a million crack-ons, afterhours, comedowns, smoke-outs and lounge sessions and remains some of the most timeless material of the recent era.

Under his own name, he has built a long-running relationship with DJ Hell and his International Deejay Gigolo imprint, releasing several EPs of thought-provoking 4/4 as well as releases on Stefan Goldmann’s Macro and Compost Black Label. His mix for Monologues is a journey through some of his finest remixes, showing his respectful and subtle skill in reworking everything from Daft Punk-produced electronic soul to bossa nova and jazz. It’s an honour to have him contribute to the series.

*How do you describe your sound?*

Sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes broad and sometimes narrow.

Life.

We’re very excited about this EP from 22-year-old French newcomer, Leon Revol. Hailing from Bordeaux, he previously released gems on Apersonal Music, Carré Bleu Rec and Boutade Musique (under the name Leonid.) before changing his name. This EP he’s put together for us shows huge potential for the youngster, with a sophisticated sound that is beyond his years. ‘Clear Definition (Dub Mix)’ comes across like vintage Herbert with a more emotive edge, ‘Eulogy For Hip-Hop’ is a string-laden, looping roller, and ‘Good Jack’ takes things deeper still for some smoky early-morning slo-mo vibes.

The fact that the mighty St. Germain entrusted long-time friend Atjazz to be the opening act on his comeback album tour – 15 years after his last LP – speaks volumes about the UK house/afro/soul/jazz fusionist’s reputation. Producing since the mid-’90s when he released early material on free party legends Digs & Woosh’s DiY Discs imprint in tandem with scoring music for computer games (the original Tomb Raider, no less), he has had a prolific and hugely varied output. Five full-length albums; remixes for the likes of Nitin Sawnhey, Jazzanova, Bob Sinclar and of course St. Germain; his labels Mantis Recordings and now Atjazz Record Company; a collaborative project Version alongside Charles Webster; his catalogue is burgeoning. It made for ripe pickings for a soulful journey in his Monologues mix, packed with exclusives, classy vocals and the breadth of his styles.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Seriously hip-shaking beats with a very soft centre!

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

I've always been inspired by jazz and Herbie Hancock is my hero. He's never stood still, he's always changed his sound, he's always innovated and his curiosity with technology is the same as mine. I also love Weather Report, anything on ECM and modern hip-hop soul. House music isn't something I listen too; it's something I live and do.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I wanted to create a mix that spanned across a few different times of my life, to show a little of my influences, collaborations and remixes, a tater menu if you will! There are many more better known pieces of work but I wanted to show a little more of "me".

Canadian producer @jaytripwire has been consistently top-notch tech house and deep house since the turn of the millennium, with a prolific output that has graced dozens of quality imprints. Although varied in his output, he can usually be counted on to serve up a slick groove with just the right amount of atmospheric texture. And it just so happens that when we contacted him, he was readying the release of a very tasty improvised live set—which we naturally pounced upon. Blending elements of electro, dub, deep techno, ambient and breakbeat, it’s seriously diverse mix.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Future music for final days. I am DJ who plays a lot of different stuff, I think of music as good or bad, not genres or labels or shit like that. I tend to have a lot of science-fiction futuristic elements that are like Woody Allen’s interpretation of the future in the ‘60s (if that run on sentence makes any sense whatsoever). I have no idea what I am doing to be honest, or what the sound is. It’s shit from the heart. Some things resonate with people, some things might be too out there, I don't care.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

Music is from the cosmos, you just channel it from the source. We’re just conduits in the true sense of art and vision. I am inspired by Kraftwerk, Underground Resistance, Vangelis, Moroder, Wu-Tang, Slayer,  Doc Martin, Mr. C, dub and reggae and the really underground Italo disco records from the late-’70s into the ‘80s.I like obscure rock, synth polka and backwards spoken word. I'm inspired by 27-year-old sandwiches living in tupperware. I used to really like to listen to radio stations in between stations to hear the secret FREQuencies. If I wasn't doing music they woulda locked me up in a rubber room with a box of crayons a long ass time ago.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s me remixing myself in a live PA format, I wanted to do something that is really genre-less. Is it house? Is it Techno? Is it ‘80s electro? Who the fuck knows. "It is what it is". I sketched it with the listener in mind instead of a club or warehouse rave.

The mysterious Raam hails from Stockholm and has been releasing a succession of tasty 12”s on his @raamrecords label over the past few years that celebrate all things analog, lush deep house and melodic techno with reverence for the Detroit greats imbued in its heart. There’s little else to say about him aside from he was involved in the Nordic disco scene in a previous incarnation… so we’ll let the music (and him) do the talking. His mix features pretty much all of his label output to date. 

*How would you describe your sound?*

Deep and forceful, produced with analogue gear, with a focus on beautiful pads dirty drum patterns and warm basslines. 

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

People, places and my record collection.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix is made out of my music as well as two remixes on my own stuff by Baba Stiltz and Samo DJ. I had an idea of what tracks I wanted play and in which order but when i started mixing it came out another way than planned but much better. I think it present´s the diversity of my label, spanning from more disco-influenced tracks to more clean techno productions.

Monologues boss Ben Gomori has found acclaim far and wide with his official edits of African gems for labels like Sterns Music and Analog Africa (for artists including Orchestra Baobab, Amadou Balake, Oby Onyioha). Here he rounds up four of his reworks of tasty tracks from artists across the Afro-Caribbean spectrum on four edits licensed from the good folk at Mr. Bongo, Soundway Records and Analog Africa.

South African legends Marumo's joyous 'Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae' gets a good juicing, full of triumphant energy, while Black Truth Band's infectious 'Umbala' is stripped back to a slinky, bumping disco groove. An exuberant slice of 1980s Camerooon comes from Emmanuel Kahe Et Jeanette Kemogne on 'Ye Medjuie', where rousing trumpet refrains meet undulating bass funk. Peter Britto's gorgeous lo-fi soca anthem 'I Want Your Love' rounds off the package, its sweet melancholy given an extra bit of energy for maximum dancefloor effect.

Something a bit different on Monologues this month as we partner with London's house/disco/garage mecca 51st State Festival to present a legend of soulful house music, @DJSpen. One of the most prolific and popular producers in that end of the spectrum, his career stretches back to the glory days of US house and garage in the mid-’90s, when he was part of the legendary production outfit The Basement Boys. He counts hundreds of production credits to his name, with collaborations alongside Karizma and Todd Terry and remixes for Michael Jackson and Diana Ross along the way. *How would you describe your sound?*

I describe my sounds as being soulful, funky, disco, jazzy, feel good dance music.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

A plethora of people and entities influence my sound from Gamble and Huff, to Parliament Funkadelic, to Curtis Mayfield and Quincy Jones, to Soul II Soul, to DJ Premier, to Jazzy Jeff, Dr. Dre and the list goes on.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

This mix is a combination of many of the sounds I love to put together. Hard and gritty, to smooth and melodic dance cuts. It was a joy to put together!

Born and raised in the UK but currently living in Malaga, @harrywolfman gathers dusty samples into loose permutations of deep house and new school disco. With a distinctive sound binding his productions together, he’s found fans through releases on House Of Disco, Dirt Crew and Secret Reels amongst others. He takes us across the full gamut of his sounds in his Monologues mix, from downtempo hazy chuggers through to his samplelicious dancefloor grooves, entirely made up of unreleased and forthcoming material.

*How would you describe your sound?*

House music primarily - usually with a lil dose of fun[k]. Also dreamy, cosmic, organic?... a lil nostalgic.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Music across the spectrum... anything from Brian Eno all the way to Rage Against The Machine... lots of jazz and funk... soundtracks... hip hop. Also experiences, playing music out to people... other art... science fiction and stuff. Life, i guess.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

This is basically an hour of forthcoming solo material over the coming months... apart from the last tune which is just a lil jam I knocked up. Just sharin' the love on what's to come :]

Something a bit special from the vaults this month. Ramsey & Fen were amongst the most prolific and pioneering producers in the UK garage scene from the latter half of the '90s into the 2000s. Their intrictate grooves, skipping percussion and weighty basslines were emblematic of the sound that the London scene birthed that would eventually lead on to grime, dubstep and all the sub-genres and hybrids that followed. Their legacy aside, they simply made immensely catchy feel-good music that oozed soul and groove from every pore. We're chuffed to have them dig out an old mix that only ever appeared as a promo CD, comprised of course of nothing but their own much-lauded productions.

Utrecht duo Fouk (@justsayfouk) have emerged from the new wave of Dutch house and disco artists like Detroit Swindle and Nachtbraker, in no small part thanks to the former’s Heist Recordings. Through there and other avenues like their own @Outplay label, House Of Disco Recordings and Razor-N-Tape Reserve, they have pushed their patchwork of grooves with great success over the last couple of years. With a knack for crafting infectious keys solos and sourcing the most pleasing of analog synth sounds, they have made themselves known for an assured, highly musical sound.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Warm house music with a lot of soul and funk. We aim to make people smile with our music. :)

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

The dreaded question! In general jazz, funk and disco from the ‘70s / ‘80s. It’s always hard to give a specific answer to this. But our tastes are pretty varied and we can get inspired by good art, great nights out playing and fun with friends; relaxation and fun feeds creativity. Also we get inspired by others in the genre of course — it’s inevitable! 

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s mainly music we made this year, sort of an end of year compilation. Also a couple of unreleased tracks from us. There’s a lot of new stuff coming up next year, but wasn’t ready to share with you just yet ;)

Young Leipzig talent Kolja Gerstenberg makes his debut on Monologues with three raw cuts following releases on Quintessentials, SUOL and Smile For A While (including a remix by Move D), plus a remix for Cassius. 'Erdball' is a chugging, stomping slice of woozy house, 'Muffsound' sees his background as a drummer shine through in its choice of breakbeats with an array of sampled textures creating the vibe, while 'Herber 660' flips between the deepest house and slo-mo trap-tinged beats. G. Markus reworks 'Muffsound' in chunkier, acid/rave-tinged style on his G-Mix.

@the-revenge, Scottish-born, Copenhagen-based purveyor of fine grooves and one half of @6thboroughproject serves up an hour of his most supremely chuggy slo-mo disco flavours for us. Languid grooves for sticky nights.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Eclectic I guess. I'm a lover of music in general so I gravitate towards anything with emotion that moves me. That's the framework really - and my production and sound flexes around that regardless genre.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Many things are the seeds of inspiration for me, not just music. It can be films, experiences, feelings ... they are as important as musical influences which stretch across the genres. I love great sounding records from bands like Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire ... but equally love dirty sounding records from people like Moodymann or Gangstarr.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I planned to do something across the bpm spectrum but didn't quite realise how much stuff I had done! So I stuck to a slow, chuggy groove featuring some older tracks I'd been involved in over the years. I've always loved that sort of tempo for starting a night off, and although I play a lot of house sets these days I always relish playing this sort of groove if I get to kick the party off.

@samruffillo is one of our favourite upcoming producers, pushing a delightfully jazzy, soulful, organic deep house sound that oozes class. Hailing from Bologna, he’s making waves rapidly through releases on Toy Tonics, Boogie Cafe and IRMA, and we predict big things for him. His music is laced with hazy keys, trumpets, flutes and all manner of warm and groovy sounds, with live instrumentation from the man himself and his friends decking out his very solid grooves. From the lounge to the dance floor, he impresses at every turn.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I’d say it’s somewhere between deep, lounge and colorful house music. I’m obsessed by grooves so I hope my sound would be described as a groovy one :)

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I draw inspiration from genres such as jazz, afro funk, soul and disco... all kind of Black music basically but also by French touch, Italian music from the ‘70s and ‘90s hip-hop. I’m very much into art as well, especially renaissance and contemporary art inspire me the most.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It represents the last couple years of studio work and releases. It feels good to have all my productions in one mix, I can feel the growth and the improvement, and it makes me proud!

Inspired by his decision to learn the piano during lockdown, 'What Is Jazz?' EP sees Ben Gomori return to his G. Markus moniker and the project's roots in the deeper end of deep house. Largely created over one quarantine-fuelled Bank Holiday weekend of stifling captivity, the EP focuses around dainty leitmotifs, with a melancholic mood running throughout. From the bossa nova beats and double bass glissandos of the title track to the hazy chords of 'Barbie Nine Jobs' (the direct translation of the Lithuanian for 'jack of all trades' and presumably implying 'master of none') and the warm ivory twinkles of 'Purple Saturn Day', the release continues a long-running tradition of house producers paying homage to its distant forefather.
