My First and Last

Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.

The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn't been a MONO full-length record to fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too.

Hey – it’s me again!
This is Talking to Ghosts — the second release from my ongoing project Cycles I.

I’ve refined my TouchOSC loop engine for this one, making it easier to switch between loops in real time. It’s a quiet but important step forward in my setup — less distraction, more flow.

The piece itself has a strange kind of presence. The loops start talking back. Layers appear, disappear, reappear — like echoes of something that was once there. Or maybe still is.

Over the past weeks, this piece slowly became more personal. As the anniversary of my brother’s death approached, certain memories and emotions began to resurface — quietly, insistently.
I didn’t plan for it to become personal, but somehow it did.
There’s a feeling of reaching out — not knowing who (or what) might answer. A sense of speaking into something unseen, hoping to hear something in return.

Maybe that’s what looping is: a conversation with what’s left behind.

The world is shifting — AI, music, identity, everything. I’m trying to figure out what it means to exist as an artist right now. What can I offer? What am I even trying to say? I don’t have answers yet. But this is part of the search.

"This album is a series of songs from a flood of inspirations in 2015. After writing song after song and giving them titles, we stumbled upon Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and the story struck a chord with us. “Divine Comedy”’s story about travelling down to Hell, through to purgatory, then from Heaven to reality turned out to be the same theme. This is when we decided to use Gustave Dóre’s illustration from “Divine Comedy”’s last scene as the main cover.

Not long after, by pure luck once again, our long-time friend Jeremy (the owner of our American label Temporary Residence) had his first-born. She was named Ely. Jeremy had been sending us photos and her heartbeats from long before she was born. When Ely was born, we decided to dedicate one of our songs to her, with hopes of her listening to it when she is grown up, and decided to use her heartbeats as an intro on “Ely’s Heartbeat”.

Through this album, we hope you can experience all life’s elements, from death and life, body and soul, hope and hopelessness, light and darkness, respect and honour transferred through generations, and new life."
