Abhishek Chanda, revered as Synths Back, is a DJ and electronic music producer whose origins lie in the secluded Andaman Islands. Synths Back is an alchemist of sound, deftly blending the nostalgic resonance of vintage synthesizers, the pulsating allure of Italo Disco, and the primordial cadence of Afro-inspired rhythms into a singular auditory experience that defies the limitations of genre.
The year 2018 heralded a transformative epoch in Synths sonic journey with the release of his seminal single, "Luna." This composition was a sonic odyssey that crystallized his artistic vision and unveiled a unique auditory lexicon to the world. "Luna" serves as a celestial map, guiding listeners through a cosmos where analog warmth meets the kinetic energy of dance floors, and ancient rhythms coalesce with the digital future.
In 2021, Synths achieved a significant breakthrough with the release of his downtempo EP, Kioku, on the esteemed Krunk Kulture label. This work resonated deeply within the electronic music community, garnering critical acclaim from influential publications such as Mixmag, Rolling Stone, and Official Humans of Music. The EP not only amplified his visibility but also firmly established his presence as a formidable force within the contemporary music scene.
Beyond the confines of the studio, Synths has brought his sonic vision to life on stage at prominent events, including India Cocktail Week in 2022 and Gin Sling in 2020. Abhishek is deeply committed not only to refining his own artistic voice but also to fostering the next generation of musical talent. His dedication to teaching aspiring DJs and producers is driven by a desire to impart the cultural and aesthetic intricacies of his unique musical style, ensuring that his legacy endures through those he mentors.
Synths Back journey is further enriched by the diverse array of artists with whom he has shared the stage. His collaborations and performances alongside luminaries such as Jitwam (The Jazz Diaries & ROYA), Horse Meat Disco (Z Records), Henry Wu, Maribou State, LIFAFA, Mo Black, FDVM, Chancha Via Circuito (ZZK Records), Thee J Johanz (Ballyhoo Records), Pablo Valentino (MCDE & Faces Records), and French Toast, among others, highlight the eclectic influences that have shaped his sonic narrative. Each collaboration and live performance weaves another thread into the intricate tapestry of Synths Back’s evolving musical journey, further solidifying his role as a visionary in the electronic music landscape.

An instrumental original that, as the title teases, has some Arab flare.  The recipe for this cut seems to blend a dash of Cairo Jazz Band with and a pinch of desert-psych funk groove, in turn creating a full, slow-burning groove that is sure to mellow and get heads nodding.

Ikebe Shakedown, the self-titled album from the Brooklyn-based band, plays with elements of cinematic soul, Afro-funk, deep disco, and boogaloo in all the right ways.  After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced “ee-KAY-bay”), delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves.

“Right now in cities across the globe, there are plenty of great Afrobeat revivalist bands aping the sound and groove of Fela Kuti’s legendary sound.  Yet, surprisingly few of the new groups have strayed from an orthodox interpretation of the genre or done much real innovation…Ikebe Shakedown is here to change that.  The band takes signature Afrobeat elements—big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks—and blends them with tasty grooves culled from ’70s-style horn-driven funk”. – Marlon Bishop, WNYC

The Ikebe debut for Ubiquity Records sees the band push their globally-informed sound and eclectic approach to tune-writing into new territory. “Self-titling the album is a way to introduce the audience to the many facets of the band — to provide a more complete understanding of what we do,” bassist Vince Chiarito says.  “Our sound has grown to incorporate our influences without overtly representing any one in particular.  It just sounds like us,” he adds.

Most of the rhythm section met at Bard College, and the band rounded-out and officially formed when everyone settled in Brooklyn in 2008.  From there, Ikebe has emerged as a compelling voice on the progressive local scene.  After a run of dates around NYC, the band recorded their debut 7” single and the EP, Hard Steppin’, which was released on Colemine Records in 2009,receiving high praise from critics and fans alike.  The group was invited to record at Dunham Studios with producer Tom Brenneck and at Killion Sound in Los Angeles, home of engineer Sergio Rios of fellow Ubiquity act, Orgone.  “The studios share a lot of similarities — the tracks were all cut live to tape with minimal use of headphones and overdubs.  This basic approach allowed us to dig in and really focus on getting dynamic performances,” Chiarito explains.

The old school mentality to recording spills over in lush, laid-back, and soulful funk joints like “Kumasi Walk” and “No Name Bar,” where the multi-layered horn section plays off a cavernous backing track of slick drumming, spacey Hammond organ, and nimble guitar riffing.  The cinematic soul sound is warm and deep, with the 7-piece band sounding more like a larger ensemble as increasing layers leap from the tape.  At the other end of the BPM counter, on “Tunjunga,” the band build a gritty African disco jam boasting a floor-filling percussion section, adding seductive guitar licks and an irresistible bass-line to set the horns ablaze. “Tame The Beats” is pure fire — bold melodies and heavy rhythms propel the song, with Meters-esque breakdowns providing only brief respite from the action.

Being the humble guys that they are, Surprise Chef aren't going to admit they have something very special going down. However, there must be some magic in their studio, or maybe in the fact they all share a house and have formed close bonds, or perhaps from absorbing the DIY ethos of running their own record label that has culminated in such a unique and enchanting sound.

'Daylight Savings' is the follow-up to the group's debut album 'All News Is Good News’. That album earned the band a much - deserved following across the world and triumphantly marked their arrival onto the international stage. Their new album was recorded in Spring 2019, almost exactly a year after they recorded ‘All News Is Good News’. It was the weekend that daylight savings time started in Australia, and the studio was filled with the smell of the towering

home studio in Melbourne, the production approach for 'Daylight Savings' is a big step up from their debut. Engineer, Henry Jenkins,
created enormous-sounding space within this record, using a great deal of creative analogue recording techniques and working in an expansive recording environment. The results are a sound that emulates the
massiveness of the late-60s Capitol Records.

‘Daylight Savings' was written collaboratively by the whole band and features the core Surprise Chef rhythm section. It expands upon where their debut left off with a leaning more towards 70's jazzfunk than soul
and a stronger focus on the rhythm section. There’s the epic drama, ebbs and flows of a vintage David Axelrod or Alain Goraguer cinematic production, plus the influence of El Michels Affair and Melbourne bands
Karate Boogaloo and The Putbacks, yet it still sounds uniquely Surprise Chef. You get a sense of that rare attribute of being both a contemporary band and a band you expect it won't be too long before other producers start sampling them.
