Waxing, is named after the lunar phase that crescendos into a Full Moon from the darkness of New. As a result, Waxing is a radiant techno track, with a funky acid bassline and a shoegaze inspired wall of sound that oscillates under a spell of reverb, growing brighter as the track goes on - similar to a waxing moon as it approaches Full.

Objekt at Draaimolen Festival 2024

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

Denver party crew Deep Club drops its second solo 12-inch EP featuring its diverse resident talent. Bocaj’s 2015 house anthem “Everything Must Change” (DC-01) lit up dancefloors, and “Marta” has been one of the most talked about tracks on the massive Gays Hate Techno 2.0 compilation. On "Already Used to It, Already Used" Bocaj merges his signature moody, groovy production skills and a knack for songwriting for a record who’s meaning extends far beyond the club. 

“Empty Is A Feeling” evokes deep, somber emotions in its swelling pads that amplifies further when the percussion drops out. Hi-hats and claps build the groove, making it equally fitting for a late morning closer or a mountain drive. “Restart” combines similar feelings with its continuous undulating rhythm and well-placed percussion, but the track nods to a different outcome: a break in the clouds and new adventures. “What’s Your Addiction” takes all of side B for a 10-minute journey across peaks and valleys and eventually, out of this world. Dreamy pads get the track brewing before the vocal sample bubbles up, but things don’t really start moving until several minutes in when the supernova synth propels the song into another dimension. Over the course of another five minutes the mix soars, taking dancers to new heights. 

"Already Used to It, Already Used" is a deeply sensual and emotional composition that establishes Bocaj as a force willing to explore such intuition on the dancefloor.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.
