Premiere: Athlete Whippet - Complain (Awanto 3 Remix)

Wolfskuil Records returns with its 39th release, presenting Dutch dance pioneer Marco V and his classic trance track “Simulated”, remixed for this special EP by fellow Dutchman and multi-faceted producer Bas Amro. “Simulated” notably influenced a new wave of producers such as Fedde Le Grand, Sander van Doorn, Hardwell and many others.

Bas Amro, having released on labels such as Bla Bla Records, Free Range Records and Wolfskuil Ltd, offers a fresh rework of this fifteen-year-old hit; updating Marco V’s classic trance vibes with his ululating sensual techno. The minimised arrangement of this remix pulls the listener deeper amongst the sounds of playful synths wavering throughout, driven by a crowd-pleaser of a kick. 

Last but not least, a special artwork has been created for the occasion of this vinyl-only release, making it a collector’s item, for both the trance & techno enthusiast. We can be sure that the rework will be the next hit of the summer and will be played across festivals.

Who Killed Palmer?

It's already been 5 years since the last Zombie Zombie album "Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde" has been released, after which the group has explored other territories by signing 2 film scores; "Loubia Hamra" by Narimane Mari and "Irréprochable" by Sébastien Marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called "Slow Futur" by Martin Palisse and Elsa Guérin.
Wouldn't these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? After 10 years at Versatile Records, 2017 also marks the anniversary of the release of their first album "A Land for Renegades" in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to Rough Trade.
This new opus "Livity" seems to plunge us into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist Philippe Druillet, who is also the founder of the Métal Hurlant comic series. The title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could think of a certain dub record made in Jamaica at the famous Compass Point studio at the Bahamas. If you didn't know, "livity" or "life force" is actually a Rastafarian concept. The record was finally recorded last winter in Paris, in a very short time frame. 7 tracks played live in 7 days, by Etienne Jaumet (synthesizers / rhythm box / metallophone / sax), Cosmic Neman (drums / vocals / sound effects), and Dr. Schonberg (percussion / electronics / trumpet), recorded at the Red Bull Studios by Thibaut Javoy and Jerome Caron, their 2 very competent engineers. To keep it in the family, the album was then mixed by another member of the Versatile stable, the mysterious and legendary DJ/producer I:Cube, done in the label's studio, Victor Studio.
On this album the principles that are dear to the group rest being respected, still as far as always from the standards of 'radio play'. A living kind of music, composed of long instrumental moments recorded with analog synthesizers and drum machines, accompanied by drums and percussion. But I:Cube's touch may bring that unique energy that one finds at the group's concerts; on certain titles like Livity (with its classic 808 drum kick club side, well ahead and bewitching with jungle sounds recorded in Laos) and especially on Hippocampe, which gives the impression of hearing an old school hip hop rhythm with the power of a metal band, having replaced their guitars by synthesizers: recommended to listen to in a convertible at the ring road.
The cinematic connotation is still strong, on titles like "Ils existent.." or "Acera", originally composed for ciné-concerts accompanying films by Jean Painlevé et Maurice Pialat. The energy of the beginning is still very present, as is - of course - the kraut inspiration. But it's also an album that takes new directions, like on “Looose”, which brings to mind the "Art Ensemble of Chicago", like a groove of James Chance in New York in the early 80's, with the free sax solos of Etienne Jaumet and Dr. Schonberg with the trumpet. The group also offers some slower and calmer titles, like "Heavy Meditation", as well as to explore new more experimental tracks in the line of French 70's groups such as Lard Free or Richard Pinhas, for example on the bonus track "Black Moon".
