Heard it after not hearing it for a long time at Nick ledesma's opening set for said the sky and it reminded me how good of a song it is. Two more cinematic offerings from bass music duo Koven and two more reasons to set excitement soaring for their debut LP ‘Butterfly Effect’ on Monstercat, ‘All for Nothing / Shut My Mouth’ is the next single set to be unleashed from the album. Continuing their success into 2020, they’re tracks which juxtapose one another yet are still underpinned by the emotive production standard which has become a defining part of Koven’s musical personality. Both Max and Katie have brought together a sound which has caught the attention of an audience, one crossing over genres. Having already revealed three new cuts, including ‘Your Pain’, ‘Give You Up’ and ‘Followers’, there’s two more singles left before the full release of ‘Butterfly Effect’. ‘All for Nothing’ and ‘Shut My Mouth’ is the penultimate part of its journey.

‘All for Nothing’ is a record many listeners will recognise from the pairs spell-binding live sets. With Katie bringing her vocal-prowess into the mix alongside her wizardry behind the decks, tracks like ‘All for Nothing’ have stood as a staple part of her sets. It combines keyed piano tones, patches of rising, orchestral instrumentals and a rolling drum rhythm which takes you into its first breakdown. Switching to a more dancefloor edge, you’re welcomed into another anthemic drum & bass delivery from Koven.

On the flipside, ‘Shut My Mouth’ follows the darker route which Koven sometimes embrace, however it still flourishes with Katie’s vocals, peppering the beginning of each breakdown. With a half-time tempo and stabbing waves of sub bass, this is the darker dubstep side of Koven’s sound, yet it still exemplifies the intricacies of Max’s production.

Fans and tastemakers alike are now left waiting for the last album single, Max & Katie have already demonstrated the talents which they both hold; as a vocalist,writer, DJ, producer and through their harmony as a duo, also highlighting why the standard for ‘Butterfly Effect’ has musically surpassed even its already sky-high expectations.

Both ‘Gold’ and ‘YES’’ are a testament to the success of Koven, spearheaded by their versatility as artists and demonstrating yet again that their production is forever crossing boundaries, never sticking to one genre. This is something which also shines through during their sets, in moments when Katie takes the mic and her electricity is felt across the crowds she plays to. Like their stadium-inspired music, each set performed by Katie takes its listener on an expedition through sound and ‘Butterfly Effect’ will be an embodiment of this same ethos.
‘Gold’ begins as a more rock-infused opener, before you’re met by Katie’s streaming vocal elements which drive the first euphoric breakdown. Pounding sub patterns and rising synths give an emotive overture to the track and yet again Katie’s penned thoughts are given life through Max’s incredible craftsmanship , with added vocal harmonies from renowned group ‘Choir Noir’ , ‘Gold’ is a very special listen.
‘YES’ delivers something totally different from Koven and it underscores their crossover appeal, whilst maintaining their flare for UK club culture. With a hook that sits beneath each staggered drop, ‘YES’ oozes with groove and stands apart from their more impassioned records. Instead, ‘YES’ was written solely for late nights and the dancefloor, only going on to highlight how diverse ‘Butterfly Effect’ truly is as an album.  
Koven’s ‘Butterfly Effect’ is about to be revealed to the global market; with a debut performance launching at Rampage Festival, Europe’s biggest dubstep and drum & bass party, as well as a packed world tour locked in for 2020.
