The vaunted techno producer discusses the connections between visual art and music, balancing a full-time career as a fine artist and how he creates his signature sound.

There's a connection between visual art and dance music that's seldom explored on our channels. Mike Parker is well known in the underground techno scene for minimal, hypnotic and beautifully executed sound design that sits somewhere at the edges of club music. But he also received his master's degree in fine art and teaches drawing and painting at Daemon University in Buffalo, New York. Fans of Parker will recognise his visual trademark: monochromatic prints that adorn the covers of the records he puts out on his label, Geophone.

In this Exchange, Parker sits down with Chloe Lula to talk about how he balances his art- and music-making practices and how they inform each other. He also opens up about the long process of sticking to his sound and finding an audience rather than catering to the demands and suggestions of labels and distributors. His 2001 breakout album, Dispatches—which he reissued last year—is a meditation on the act of living far away from any listeners or immediate influences, and he discusses the ongoing drawbacks and rewards of balancing the Eurocentric pursuit of DJing with day-to-day work that's so geographically removed. He also opens up about his longtime collaboration with Donato Dozzy, his love of mid-20th-century sci-fi movies and how free-form radio shaped his approach to music and art. For our twenty-fourth installment we've invited Orca Silent, he is an experimental electronic artist from Coast Salish Territory, blending nature’s raw energy with deep, hypnotic techno and ambient soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes off Vancouver Island, their music merges field recordings with generative sound, creating a sonic journey that resonates with depth.

Live performances are a dynamic journey of evolving drones, jungle polyrhythms and complex textures, shaped by granular synthesis and spatial audio techniques. These elements come together to transport audiences into immersive, three-dimensional environments, where sound and space interact in real-time.

Recent releases on Oslated, Secuencia Temporales and forthcoming on Huinali Recordings have gained recognition from the deep end community, with original production sets released on platforms Delayed, Deepbreakfast, and Codecast. Witness the rolling energy of bush tested, Pacific Atmospherics, celebrated coast to coast from Future Forest, through Wonderment, Cascadia NW and beyond.

Evening originated in dreamy, subtle environments evolving into peaktime passages with a heavy emphasis on cold electronica. The Manchester based artist can be found behind the counter at the legendary Eastern Bloc Records where he fronts the house and techno curation for the shop.  He has leveraged his exposure to the latest sounds there to promote his own Unveiled Nuance events and label as well as securing performances at events throughout the country.

"I aimed to create something that reflects where I am sonically right now. The aesthetic of the deeper sound has expanded so much lately, touching on all sorts of BPM's and vibes, and I've really been loving every bit of it. This music requires some patience and a commitment to fully appreciate it, which is one of the reasons it continues to captivate me so much.
