I recently entered the BBC Introducing Radio 1 Dance competition to be in for a shot with a set at the BBC Radio 1 Weekender. In order to win you had to put together a 20-minute mini-mix opening with at least one of your own productions. I decided to use all of my own tracks for the mix, including one unreleased remix. I never won the competition but I've uploaded my mix onto Soundcloud in case you would like to hear it (link in bio)

Mini Mix

As part of the decompression crew, Lisa (@lisa-naegeler) gets hella excited for breaks and old school dub techno made in 90s Berlin. Having just recently started to get into mixing her favorite records, she already played at the last decompression club night and at a party in her hometown Dortmund.
In her first mix for decompression she combines her love for rhythmic percussions and rolling beats with slight influences of dub techno and breakbeat.

Andrew Weatherall's first official posthumous mix. The only b2b DJ Harvey ever agreed to. Six hours at Trouw. This one's special.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Darwin Wagner (@drwnwgnr) is a Cologne-based live act known for his distinctive hardware performances, moving between stripped-down minimal techno and dub techno live sets. With a strong sense for groove and sonic space, his sets range from tightly focused rhythmic explorations to expansive, echo-laden soundscapes. As a member of the ambivalent collective, Darwin creates immersive live experiences rooted in tactile interaction with his machines.

Volume VII brought to you by Edinburgh based Kieran Apter (@kieran-apter). Co-founder of Edinburgh’s Tweak_ party series and with three EPs to his name to date, Apter is a relative newcomer to the production circuit with a promising year ahead.  Since his debut release on Anima Somnis this August, Apter secured releases with Chapter 24 Records and Anjunadeep before 2017’s close.  With vocals from Leon Power, his Chapter 24 Records EP saw distinctive remixes from Aera and Manuel Tur and was supported on dancefloors by Keinemusik and Dixon to name but a few – no short order for a rookie producer on his sophomore release. 

Simply put, his productions are spellbinding. Employing drama in his arrangements, Apter’s growing catalog is riddled with a sense of restlessness, a soul-searching melancholia and a willful power to rectify this incongruence - a sensation we expect reminiscent to gazing across the Scottish Highlands on low winter’s light. 

As a DJ, he weaves a similar story, binding hands up highs with inward looking reposes. This mix closes the year for both us and he, and with a handful of exclusives he weaves a turbulence of emotions resemblant of 2017, ending on a positive note Apter offers a good omen for the year ahead.  We certainly hope it to be so and expect no less for Apter, for him the only way is up.

Closing the beach stage at Sisyphos back in August was possibly my favourite gig to date! I was a little nervous before going on as Katrinka had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand before I started, but after a couple of tracks (and a couple of beers 😉) I relaxed into it, and it always helps having friends come along for a dance with you!

The place was packed by the time I got there and the sun came down as I played, you may be able to tell at which point by the track selection! Enjoy..

Thanks to his impressive knowledge of house music and carefully curated DJ sets, Kieran Apter has risen through Edinburgh’s underground to become one of Scotland’s most exciting talents. Since founding esteemed club night, Tweak_, in 2015, where he warmed up for Mano Le Tough, Seth Troxler, Moodymann, San Proper, Fort Romeau, Dorisburg and more, he has since elevated his profile to play across landmark European venues such as Wire Club Leeds, Sisyphos Berlin and Night Tales in London. 

Raised in a musical household, with his father playing in various bands, Kieran’s early musical explorations ranged from rock to samba, and he developed a love for hip hop in his early teenage years. From a young age, Kieran would make the journey from his rural hometown of West Calder to Edinburgh, indulging himself in all the city had to offer, heading to raves and falling in love with dance music while still in school. After moving to the city when he was 18, he soon became a regular face on Edinburgh’s underground scene. 

It's this exposure to music that has given Kieran’s productions the sound that DJ Mag recently described as “warm, cosmic and deeply emotional”. He’s come a long way from his early ‘All I Want’ EP, that found its way into the sets of Dixon, Rampa, &ME and Andhim, and aired by both Pete Tong and B.Traits on their BBC Radio 1 shows. These days, Kieran’s output continues to grow, with high-profile gigs and an acclaimed Boiler Room for FLY Club at Cabaret Voltaire, as well as starting an independent record label showcasing his work and the work of various friends and artists who share the same love for quality underground dance music. His label, CB90 Dance Recordings, is a passion-driven project, inspired by youth culture and a deep-rooted heritage of dance music in Scotland. So far, releases include the likes of Man Power, Brain Dancing, Anthony Georges Patrice, as well as his own productions, which touch on house, techno and acid. 

Kieran’s ability to seamlessly flit between genres while offering profound and thoughtful components in each track make his records as suited to the dancefloor as solo listening. Consistently receiving DJ support from artists such as &ME, Butch, Theo Kottis, Konstantin Sibbold, Jennifer Cardini and Sean Johnston have meant his records soundtrack dancefloors at clubs like Panorama Bar, DC-10, and Subclub. 

In the last 18 months, Kieran’s music has gone on to receive multiple plays on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Scotland, becoming a regular feature and gaining support from the BBC Introducing programme. He holds residencies at both Crèche in London, run by Alexis Raphael, and Pleasure at Cabaret Voltaire alongside Theo Kottis, Alien Communications, IDA and more. He also opened the Boiler Room Stage at last year’s FLY OPEN AIR festival. 

With a busy release schedule taking us up to 2024, Kieran has set himself up well for an exciting future.
