Literally meaning “God will help” in Hebrew, Lazarus Mathebula tacked the suffix ‘–man’ to his given name creating Lazarusman, the moniker of his work. To some, this softens the blow of a biblical name, but to others, this twist of meaning, “God will help man” epitomizes Lazarus’ sophisticated lyricism wrought with word play. 

Since embarking on collaborations with Stimming in 2010, Lazarusman has carved a unique role for himself as a slam poet come lyricist in the world of electronic music. A path which few have wandered without slipping into the sides of gimmicky house stabs and diva-esque realms, but Lazarus, who rarely prepares his delivery before recording, freestyles prose starkly contrasting the aforementioned - biting into heavier, often philosophical terrain.  One only needs to look so far as his latest track, “Breathe” to appreciate Mathebula’s ability in turning even the simplest topic into a commentary on constructs. His catalogue, which includes collaborations with Aki Bergen, Alex Dimou, Djuma Soundsystem, DJ T., Hyenah, Florian Kruse, Re.you, Tigerskin, and Till Von Sein, presents an ever expanding archive of Lazarusman’s inner thoughts. No subject is off the table for the Johannesburg based slam poet.

In our tenth installment of Movements, Lazarus exposes moments of his lyricism, but the focus of the mix falls on his proficiency on turntables. He builds from a sense of brooding driving the listener’s expectation down a line only to veer to an unforeseen plain. From here the journey progresses, beautifully twisting and turning like a moment of his word play, right until he delivers the final blow.

BIO:

Metha is the Hungarian BURN Residency DJ of 2018. In the scope of the programme he worked together with Luciano in his studio and had an amazing DJ set on the Ark festival cruise this summer which was the last challenge of the Residency competition. 
Metha is one of the most famous Hungarian electronic music DJs and producers. He has played his own gigs for 17 years and has performed at all of the big Hungarian festivals like B My Lake, Sziget, Bónusz and Balaton Sound. 
He has also performed at several events and festivals  in Germany, Switzerland, Moscow, Slovakia, France and Spain in front of thousands of people. His international career also took off in the past years; he has played together with top DJs and producers. 
In the previous 2 years he was the DJ of the official Paul Kalkbrenner afterparties. Metha’s works as a producer are played by such big names as Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Egbert and many others. His tracks were among the top 10 at the resident advisor top 50 Chart and are regularly in the top lists at Beatport. 
His own party series, 'Be Massive', has been an important element of the nightlife of Budapest for the past 15 years. Once a month they hold an event where foreign DJs entertain at least a thousand people. Metha has invited such big world class performers to his event series first time performing in Hungary, like Charlotte de Witte, Sam Paganini, Pig & Dan, Raxon, Blancah, Olivier Giacomotto, Drunken Kong, Dubspeeka, VII Circle and many others.

After a hugely successful showcase back in March of last year, we welcomed back one of Berlin's best known clubs who brought their very own showcase to Brighton by featuring a selection of their top residents. 

Ritter Butzke is located on the ground floor of a former factory in Kreuzberg. It began as an illegal club in 2007, but went official two years later. The venue has three main dance floors, plus an outdoor courtyard that's open in the summer. The DJs and the crowd are most often Berliners. This dimly-lit huge club is always bursting at the seams and is hidden away in a large complex of buildings on Moritzplatz. It has certainly achieved legendary fame in the city and worldwide.

We caught up with Ritter Butzke's very own Label head Matthias Schuell, who after impressing so many Brightonians last year, it was only natural that we invited him back to the South Coast.

After a solid education in multiple classical instruments and drums Matthias Schuell took an unlikely choice to enter the electronic scene as a producer, DJ and live act. Quickly after the breakup of his international successful project “BAAL” in January 2019 he concentrated on his growing solo career. Always keeping an energetic vibe in his productions, he tries out different tempos and styles and creates music with a broad portfolio of sounds and instruments.

In his powerful live sets he uses his talent to support his music with live drums and piano elements. His first EP „Scarabaeus“ in June 2018 on Niconé's imprint Dantze was played by Joris Voorn, Animal Picnic, Moonwalk and many more and quickly took the pole position to become the number one song of the Dantze label on Beatport. His EP „Hoodoo“ on Einmusika in May 2019 charted in the Beatport Top 10 Releases in the genres „Techno“ and „Melodic House & Techno“ for several weeks. Since 2018 he holds a residency and works as the label manager at the Ritter Butzke Club Berlin.
