APLTRONIC012 is Carlo Giustini's EP ’Tutto Quadra’.
Carlo is a musician, sound designer and sound researcher but most importantly is a careful listener. His creative process entails the observation and auscultation of the environment that surrounds him. His productions derive by the accurate assimilation of what the space, object and matter can produce in terms of sound, that’s why he likes to call himself a ‘silent witness of what happens outside’, and rightfully so as he impeccably depicts the profound soul of these ambiences with his music. His house is where everything usually starts off and ‘Tutto Quadra’ fully epitomises his musical talent, being a clear example of his workflow and a display of his influences. His musical approach is based on the listening of the outside world and to his house and it never begins with a specific idea but often just by leaving the microphone on and the window open because, as he says, ‘true music is out there’ . He draws inspiration from the Poor Art, collage and Found Sound and the hardware he employs is normally essential, sometimes flawed and primitive. His music has to be intended as a background sound, somebody would call it ‘drone’, but where the importance of details is crucial to get a grasp of its entirety as the sound layering entailed is complex and every factor blends in a metamorphic, boundless musical canvas. Carlo says that ‘Tutto Quadra’ is his best work to date, involving Ambient, New age, sampled Jazz and Drone elements which really fit together and he suggests that it should be listened ‘from start to finish, at low volume and possibly at night.’

Early last year an Italian record producer friend of mine, Carlo Variola moved to Natal in North East Brazil and started to record local musicians performing Candomblé religious ceremonies as part of a project called 'Ocean Waves Brasil'. He's been sending the multitrack recordings back to me to remix. It's the first time that this kind of collaboration has taken place.
Given my love for Brazilian music from an early age it's been a dream project, and I've been really happy (and to be honest a little relieved) to find that there's an incredible buzz in Brazil about the initial mixes.

Here is the first remix. The song is dedicated to Exu. Exu is the orixá of communication. He is the guardian of towns, cities, houses, of axé (supernatural forces of energy, power and nature), of things that occur and of human behaviour. The word Èsù in Yorubá means “sphere” and, in truth, Exu is the orixá of movement.

One of our favourite producers, the talented and versatile Contours, puts an club-destroying spin on the deep, gnawa-influenced "Maktub" cut by Cuban trumpeter, producer, composer and artist Yelfris Valdés. Forthcoming on Música Macondo.

Featuring London-based gnawa specialist and Electric Jalaba frontman, Simo Lagnawi, "Maktub" was originally released on Yelfris' acclaimed 'For The Ones...' LP in 2019.  This favourite LP of ours delved deep into Yelfris' Yoruba religion and its shamanic chants, subtly infusing those deeply personal elements with electronica and live instrumentation creating a beautiful pulsating soundscape. 

In purposefully mutating the acoustic sound of his trumpet he adds depth without losing his power and tenderness. Manifesting an adventurous and experimental shift in his composition, Yelfris drew on his classical training and love of jazz whilst at the same time delving further into the world of electronica.

Now Yelfris Valdés and Música Macondo have invited an all-star cast of producers to remix and reinterpret a selection of the LP’s standout tracks. With the LP’s impressive palette of epic, cosmos-weaving trumpet melodies, fuzzy keys and psychedelic textures at their disposal, Quantic, K15, LCSM, Osunlade, Maxwell Owin, Contours repurpose and rework some of the album’s key moments, bringing an injection of dancefloor - friendly sensibilities to the proceedings.

'For The Ones​.​.​. Remixed' is released on Friday June 4 on vinyl and digital.
