Finest Synthesizers

Berlin school style recording. I decided to try out sequencing my dotcom modular from my Analog 4's CV outputs. Works well.

Main line and the lead sound towards the end are both sequenced dotcom analog modular (typical patch: three oscillators mixed together, a fourth in LFO mode operating on pulse width. Two envelopes: one for filter, one for VCA. One filter - dotcom ladder filter). Delay is from the Analog Four.

Secondary bass is Moog Slim Phatty (two tracks, two different sounds)

Rocket type sound partway in is the Moog Sub Phatty noise with multi-drive

Massive sound this opens with is actually a modular sequence that I've completely obscured using Valhalla UberMod and Valhalla Shimmer

Filter sweeps are Moog Sub Phatty

Gong is Kontakt with I forget what library.

Crash sound near the end is Omnisphere

Most other ambient sounds are Camel Alchemy

Tape simulation applied to entire track to give it an old feel. I use ToneBoosters Reel Bus 

Mixed in Cubase 7 on Windows 8.1.

Feb. 15, 2015: New mixdown with the Roland Motional Surround® and RSS® technology (Not optimized for headphones).
The RSS-10 is a single rack space unit that utilizes Roland's proprietary three-dimensional sound processing technology. Using a conventional two-channel system, sound can be placed or moved anywhere in the three-dimensional field.
The Motional Surround (inside the Integra 7) is derived from Roland’s proprietary RSS (Roland Sound Space) technology. Lets you control not only the left/right panning of sounds, but also their depth, even placing them behind you.

About the track:
I started making electronic music (using Atari/Amiga and few synths) when I was 13 and have created a remake of my very first track.
I grew up listening to Jean Michel Jarre who has been one of my inspirations.
I went back in time to bring out the song I first created...
and brought back to life a soundtrack I want share with you.

Holy Ghost Raw Sounds - Unmixed

The bulk of this piece comes from two loops made up from RME melodies played  into a Line 6 Echo Pro, mixed in and out from each other. The bass notes also come from RME. The slow-motion drum derives from mangled Dumbec loop, and the ending cloud comes from layers of PVC flute.

3.Not Lost But Hiding

Recently, Moog had the honor of sitting down with Nine Inch Nails’  Trent Reznor, the genre-defining music innovator, master synthesist and Academy Award winning composer. In the interview, Reznor recounts his intimate relationship with the Minimoog Voyager, which he feels “is the archetype of what a synthesizer is and should be.” Through personal stories, Reznor reveals his decades long history with the instrument and how it has shaped the way he views and creates music. 

The video is set to an original score by British electronic music producer, The Haxan Cloak, co-producer of Bjork’s Vulnicura.. Befitting the occasion, the artist used a Minimoog Voyager and a prototype Mother-32, Moog’s newest synthesizer, to create the score. 

"I made the track in a unique way that I never have before.

I have had modular synths for a long time, and consistently produced music with them, but purposefully never had a ‘keyboard-based’ setup because of not wanting to treat them in such a ‘traditional’ manner (purely for reasons of self-limitation).

Having the Voyager allowed me to utilize a more responsive approach of seeing the picture and essentially ‘playing’ along to it. I then took those results and used them to modulate other parameters and processed them further. The Mother 32 was used extensively as a sound source alongside also.

The Voyager is a synth I have always been fascinated by, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to own. I knew people that had them, but my first physical encounter was actually on the recent Bjork tour.  I used it for a lot for recreating basslines from her back catalogue, which it did effortlessly.

Sweet Saw Pad

This song was created using exclusively Minitaur, it demonstrates its more aggressive sonic abilities. For the snare, a Moog CP-251 Noise output was routed to the audio input of Minitaur for processing. For the kick the resonance was cranked with oscillators 1 and 2  reinforcing the bottom end.

Electro Grind

This textural song was created using exclusively Minitaur. It demonstrates Minitaurs sonic flexibility.  

Ur-mi-ni-ta-ru-ah

This Acid jam features Minitaur as the main bass synth; drums are a Roland TR-505 and Alesis SR-16, both circuit-bent.  The noise drone that comes in at about 00:20 is a Minimoog Voyager.

MegaMinitar is a short demo using just two drum loops and the
Minitaur. It features 6 layers of Minitaur no effects. This song uses a simple LFO
rate modulated bassline line mixed with some harmonic higher note
lead lines on top for a fun little dubstep style demo.  Mixing up to
4 layers for the baselin;. one sub like tone, then one wavy wobbly
tone, then a solid harmonic square wave line as the final layer.

MegaMinitaur (Richard Devine)

Lead synth is Minitaur being driven by a FutureRetro Orb sequencer and tweaked live.  The audio from the Minitaur is running into a Moogerfooger MF-105M MIDI MuRF.
The sequencer is controlling the Minitaur via Pitch-CV and Gate (analog sequencing), and the sequencer’s MIDI clock is driving the MuRF, so everything is tightly synchronized.
Finally, there is a simple ping-pong delay added to this track in Ableton Live.
 
Bass synth is straight Minitaur, sequenced via MIDI from Ableton Live with some parameter tweaks while recording the audio.
 
Kick drum is also Minitaur, created by turning the VCF resonance to maximum and the oscillator levels to zero, then sweeping the filter cutoff frequency into a kick shape using the filter envelope.

MoogDub2 - Slow heavy groover using just the Minitaur and two drum
loops. For the low baseline a dubby wobble baseline was sequenced and
then recorded with the LFO rate modulating the VCF LFO amt. The rate changes were recorded in logic and then the automation breakpoints were edited to
work on time with the beat. The higher synth tone are just one lead
line washed in reverb then panned left to right for another added
texture.

これまでポストパンクやシューゲイザーなどのジャンルで広く認識されていたジェレミー・トイ（以下、ジェレミー）率いるバンドShe's So Radは今回のE.P.制作にあたり自身が深く精通する80'sディスコやブギーサウンドのテイストを取り入れスペシャルなディスコサウンドを制作。ジェレミーは今回のレコーディングにおいてMoog、DMX、Drumtraks等のヴィンテージのアナログシンセ、エフェクター、ドラムマシーンなど使用し、ニュージーランドオークランドにある映画館跡の地下スタジオで自らそれらの楽器を演奏しすべて録音。80'sの録音手法を再現する為に、コンピューターのシンセサイザーやサンプリングマシーンの一切の使用を避け、本物のミュージシャンが本物の楽器を使うスタイルで当時のリアルな音を再現。ジェレミーは「ポストパンクのバンドがライブでブギーをプレーできるなんて最高だよね。ロックバンドがブギーミュージックに持ち込めるエナジーって言ったらスゴいんだよ。＜Marcus Miller＞や＜Tom Browne＞よりも＜E.S.G＞や＜Talking Heads＞みたいな生の荒々しいの感覚に近くなってると思うんだよね。勿論＜Marcus Miller＞や彼らからもこのE.Pを作るに辺りスゴい影響は受けてるんだけどね・・」

ゲストプレイヤーとしてご存じデトロイト出身で現在はニュージーランド（オークランド）を拠点に活動するプロデューサーRecloose（リクルース）がDisco Star(B3)にサックスプレイヤーとして、そしてLive Via Camloops(B1)にキーボード・プレイヤーのステップ・ブラウン aka Lipsが参加。マスタリングはJ Dilla、Quasimoto、J Roccなどストーンズスロー作品等も手掛けるLAのマスタリングエンジニア、Dave Cooleyが担当。

She's So Rad - Last Dance E.P. (WN12030)

Until now, the band She’s So Rad have been synonymous with post/punk,shoegaze music. With the ‘Last Dance E.P.’ producer Jeremy Toy has dug deep in his knowledge of disco and boogie to create a ‘special disco version’ release for the band. The result is a 6 track E.P. full of disco/boogie heat.

Last Dance E.P. has been created entirely with analog synths, live instruments and 1980’s era specific drum machines all performed by Jeremy Toy, recorded in his studio beneath a rundown cinema in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand. There is no use of soft-synths or software based samplers as Toy wanted to deliver a record that was made “like they used to make records” with real musicians playing real instruments. The heart of this record is a Moog synthesizer, DMX and Drumtraks drum machines. Vocals are performed by Anji Sami and Jeremy Toy in unison to create their unique vocal sound.

The record has been made at the highest fidelity possible, 24bit 88.2khz, so that the vinyl pressing can be as sonically full and as close to reality as a digital recording can be.These songs have been transformed live by the band and the band can now play disco party sets on request as an alternative to their shoegaze sets. Toy has said
of this change “it is such a great thing to be able to play this live boogie with a band that is used to playing post punk music, the energy a rock band brings to the boogie music is great, we end up with a live sound that is much closer to the raw feeling of E.S.G. or Talking Heads than the super smooth boogie of Marcus Miller and Tom Browne although these artists are also big influences on the E.P.” The E.P. has guest appearances from Recloose - saxophone on ‘Disco Star’ and Steph Brown (aka Lips) - Sequential Circuits Pro-One synth wobbles on ‘Live Via Camloops’.No stranger to a large variety of genres of music, Toy is a past participant at the Red Bull Music Academy and has produced records for Opensouls, Tyra Hammond & The Tornadoes, Ladi6, Lips,Hollie Smith and The Sami Sisters as well as appearing on records by Julien Dyne, Liam Finn, Electric Wire Hustle, Homebrew, David Dallas and Mark De Clive-Lowe.
