The third compilation (of four instalments) in the Various Artists catalogue of Pi Electronics is hitting physical and digital stores around the globe on the 10th of February 2023.

The concept of releasing artists, who performed at π parties (2014-2019) along with musicians who stood close to the label before and during its activity, gathers 18 tracks to the Limitation Compilation.

Music by New York City industrial legend Adam X, Swedish master mind producer Peder Mannerfelt and Irish Techno figure, Eomac (also one half of Lakker) finally takes its place on the label catalogue, along with tracks by the electro side of Italian born producer, Alessandro Adriani and the sound-aesthetic of UK hailing musicians, Slave to Society (formerly AnD ) and Sam KDC.
Berlin artists Alekzandra and Interviews appear with a synth leaning piece, and a hypnotic, broken techno contribution respectively.
You can also meet the sound of Tel Aviv’s finest electro duo TV.OUT on this release, which also includes a rare collaboration track by Ireen Amnes and Gramrcy.
Finally, ‘Limitation’ presents music by Greece affiliated acts of different backgrounds: from the dreamy guitars of Monochromatic Visions and the ambient/drone of Devika, to the broken beats of Zevla and Ønly, as well as the rolling techno of Thanos Hana. Not to mention the textures of noise band Phallucipher, the industrial slo mo techno of Thessaloniki’s, Archaic Intellect, and the noise-techno of label founder, 3.14.

A crossroad of different genres and production styles is offered in the formats of Double Vinyl Sampler, Double CD and digital for this compilation, titled “Limitation”.

Stephen James Buckley aka Polypores returns for his second full album on the DiN imprint following on from his 2022 debut “Hyperincandescent” (DiN71).

Though we’ve come to know a wide range of sounds from Polypores, it’s here on “Multizonal Mindscramble” that we get plunged into the outer reaches of the inner psyche. Flickering insectoid transmissions are laid atop slowly shifting walls of drifting oscillators, barely discernible chirps and static-encrusted filter sweeps. There are moments of undeniable melodic bliss amongst the warm, weightless transmissions though, with soaring arpeggios and covert counter-melodies emerging from the fog and coalescing into perfect harmony before fading once again into the ether. The slow intricate weaving of sounds and timbres has become a Polypores trademark, and once again the fluidity and ease with which Buckley moves between sound-worlds is evident on this new album. The organic textures morph and grow, from a syncopated glitching oscillator through to slow swells of synth and spacey, cavernous reverb. Like a languid walk through the forest, while you gradually melt through the earth and into the soil. 

A perfectly balanced textural odyssey, and a stunning example of the depth and breadth of the Polypores sound “Multizonal Mindscramble” is released both as a 180g Vinyl edition and a Digipak CD with stunning artwork from Wendy Carroll that matches the music perfectly.

Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

The first seven volumes on the Tone Science sub-label featured 63 musicians (9 on each album) with varying backgrounds and styles, showcasing the wonderful richness and variety inherent in the world of modular synthesis. The next step was to transfer this concept to a live performance and hence the inaugural Tone Science Live concert, which took place at the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool on the evening of 22nd April 2023. 

All five musicians were set up onstage simultaneously and each played solo before joining together at the end. Field Lines Cartographer opened the evening with a beautiful set full of glistening textures and pulsating oscillations. Next came Nigel Mullaney with a more upbeat performance, featuring the famous “Pale Blue Dot” speech from Carl Sagan which seemed very appropriate as the 22nd April was Earth Day. After a short interval, Polypores took to the stage with a breath-taking display of modular synth virtuosity, with him constantly shifting and morphing the myriad sequencer patterns and tones emanating from his modular system. DiN label boss Ian Boddy followed with a sonic trip through four ambient sections, seamlessly mixing minimal ambience with vibrant pulsing sequencers before falling away to a tranquil conclusion. After another short break, Scanner played a stunning set featuring field recordings and disarming vocal samples and building up a monumental industrial rhythm from the simplest of ingredients.

The evening ended in fine style with all five musicians taking to the stage and performing an ambient drone piece inspired by the early American minimalist composers. At the helm was Scanner, mixing and shaping the overall sound of the music as it slowly grew in intensity to fill the hall with a mesmerising wash of tones. A fitting end to what was a fantastic evening of music from five musicians coaxing such varied and beautiful sounds from their small modular systems.

The entire evening is presented as a double CD in a 6-panel Digipak with accompanying 8 page booklet. A must-have album for followers of the Tone Science series.

Moogulator plays mutates and rearranges sounds and music live on stage for exactly that room. there's no concert like the one before. y

Ob Moogulator ein Genre spielt lässt sich schwer beantworten IDM, Ambient, Industrial, Synthpop ist sicher mit drin unter anderem, vielleicht auch ein Rest DnB. Bei Konzerten prüft er die Lage im Raum und wird nicht gezwungen sein ein festes Programm in irgendeinem Stil durchzuziehen "ihr müsst da jetzt durch". Aber dennoch hat die Musik stets Spuren einer besonderen Struktur mit den Sounds, sie werden nicht nur "verwendet" sondern es ist mehr. Diese werden immer genau dann in diesem Moment erzeugt und nicht vom Rechner als Audiofile abgespielt. Zwischen blinkenden skurrilen Elektroinstrumenten wird Handarbeit geleistet. Um den Britzelpop-Musiker versammeln sich Instrumente & Maschinen, deren Funktion und Auswirkung oftmals aus und auf Augenhöhe beobachtet werden können. Nicht immer hinter "Keyboardständern", sondern auch so - Live ist wichtiger als Studio - daher komm und sieh und hör dir das an. Sonst weisst du nichts und erfährst nichts. 

Einflüsse? Na klar! Rhythmische Konstruktionen aus dem Mathebuch, aber mit Herz. Es gab einst Genrebezeichnungen mit 3 und mehr Buchstaben, die zu Beginn versuchten einen Teil dessen festzuhalten, aber wirklich drin aufhalten konnte Herr Moogulator sich nicht, da die notwendige Atmosphäre fehlte. Wer hat schon EBM, IDM, Glitch, Synthpop, Filmsound mit und ohne Bild, New Wave, Neue Musik, Industrial, DnB und (Ihr Begriff hier) schon einmal gehört? Wie auch immer dieses morgen wird und mal bezeichnet wurde - dem Kind der Siebziger blieb durch diese sicher nicht unbeeinflusst. Und wem sagt das noch oder bald etwas? Nur ein paar Nerds. Keine Musik für ein stilfestes spezielles Spezialpublikum. Nicht einfach zum tanzen oder für Kunstausstellungen mit schwarzer Kleidung. Wie einen Apfel auf dem Mond finden. Also macht der Moogulator als "elektronisch" erkennbare Musik und setzt sie neu zusammen. Bei der Suche im Netz wird man bei seinem Namen auch auf Synthesizer stoßen, denn damit wird er auch in Verbindung gebracht. Aber nicht erschrecken.

Konzerte verlaufen individuell, neu und werden auch nicht alle aufgenommen oder mitgeschnitten. Sie sind daher speziell für den Tag und enthalten keine Wiederholungen, denn die kann man mit Elektronik ohnehin leicht erzeugen.Genau deshalb sitzt dieser Moogulator auch daran und die Klänge und Strukturen, die entstehen sind -jetzt-. Moogulator soll aber auch bereits in sehr unterschiedlichen Besetzungen beobachtet worden sein. Was kommt ist anders. Kann man Kunst tanzen? Darf man in Clubs auf den Klang hören und einfach nur zuhören, das Hirn oder Emotionen verwenden? Mal sehen, was er dieses Mal macht und wie sich das anfühlt?
