Since 1989, Shaka has been the pseudonym for Swiss DJ and producer Kurt Spichiger. In the late 80’s he began to record his first Hip Hop and Funk mix tapes. Eventually more and more Acid, Chicago House and the sounds of Detroit made their way into his mixes.
Throughout the mid-1990’s, Shaka could be heard at the bigger electronic music events and clubs in Switzerland. His sets consisted at this time primarily of old Detroit Soul and Chicago House and were appreciated for their intimacy. As a result, Shaka has developed a style that stands out from big room electronic music and continues
to astonish his audiences with surprisingly subtle and organic tracks.
As a producer, in 1995, Shaka’s first record came out on the Swiss label D3. Since then Shaka has seen releases on Axodya, Country Western, Revolver Canada, Morris Audio, Floppy Funk, Kolour LTD, Balance US, Traxx Underground to name but a few. Finally, in 2019 Shaka launched his new label Vibes and Grooves to provide a platform to breath life into his personal projects integrating his various influences under one banner with like-minded musicians.
Far and beyond the Beatport charts, Shaka’s DJ sets remain influenced by different directions and often come with surprises. He is first and foremost a music-lover, stylistic barriers be damned.

Following the release of ‘Happy Song’, the first single from forthcoming album ‘Break The Wall’, MF Robots reveal the full extended version of the song alongside remixes from Kenny Dope, Kaidi Tatham and Daz-I-Kue.

It’s only right that Kenny Dope should be the first producer to remix Jan Kincaid and Dawn Joseph’s new MF Robots project, considering the trio’s shared musical history. Kenny Dope began reworking Jan’s ‘Brand New Heavies’ material back in the early 90’s as one half of Masters At Work, helping the band reach club-land over and over again with a series of iconic remixes, recorded during the golden era of MAW’s output.

It’s no surprise then that there’s more than a hint of that special, Latin sunshine-infused mid-90’s House sound in Kenny’s rework of Happy Song, which showcases Dawn’s impeccable vocals over an infectious rhythm track and ultra-funky horn stabs. An instrumental version of Kenny’s mix is also included for the House purists, as well as the full, extended original version of Happy Song, packed with tight musicianship and more than its fair share of great grooves.

Pioneers of the UK Broken Beat movement and contributors to its most emblematic group, Bugz In The Attic, it seems almost inconceivable that Kaidi Tatham & Daz-I-Kue have never actually worked on a remix together before. As strange as it may sound, it’s true, and their powerhouse rework of ‘Happy Song’ is most definitely worth the wait.

About MF Robots:

Meeting in 2013 while recording and performing with one of the UK’s most commercially successful Acid Jazz bands, legendary UK drummer Jan Kincaid and vocalist Dawn Joseph discovered immediate musical chemistry and began writing songs together right away. They soon left the band to concentrate on their own work, starting MF Robots (Music For Robots) and releasing an eponymous debut in 2018. The album was so well received that the duo soon morphed into a band as they found themselves in-demand at venues and festivals all over Europe.

Forthcoming long player ‘Break The Wall’ represents a new benchmark for Jan and Dawn, reflecting the MF Robots project coalescing and maturing while fine-tuning their material, both on the road and in the studio.

Plucked from an open mic by Grammy award winning producer James Poyser and quickly placed in the “right rooms”, guitarist and songwriter Ezekiel marries the melodies of the western world with the sounds of Africa. Born in West Philadelphia to Nigerian immigrants, he lives through a lens of liminality.

Influenced by his parents, Ezekiel developed a love for highlife music and traditional Afrobeat. He then consumed jazz and neo-soul. As a result, his music reflects a conversation in his soul between genres — deep drones gliding across bright chords, and a percussive bass, accented by chanting and lush tones.

Ezekiel challenges the objective definition of several genres backed by the rich sonic experience of Mell Starr and Eric Lau. The motifs of liminality and freedom -mental, social, and spiritual - are deeply woven into his forthcoming album Everything is Under Alarm slated to be released on December 4th, 2020

Exclusive Premiere: Saint Ezekiel "Suffering Shuffle"

MIMS is excited to premiere "Sketchy", the second single from saxophonist, composer & beatmaker, Thijsenterprise's forthcoming 'Lahringen' album, an addictive jazz tune with post punk energy. We are also excited to premiere a special DIY music video put together this week, just for us!

Reinier Thijs a.k.a. Thijsenterprise's new project 'Lahringen' begins where most of his previous creations have left off. Through reedy skronking sax, no easy listening aesthetics here, we get that passport to the '80s. The intersection between Lou Reed's old New York attitude and the encroaching rhythmic assault about to hit. Post-punk, featuring steady bass lines—peak demon Jaco to cool as fuck Slits era—in transit.

"Sketchy", an original arrangement, taps Reinier's dedication to skateboarding. Named for when skate rats land a trick sloppy, non-smooth, or ugly he does in fact match the sound of the bass with the feeling of ‘meh.’ “The drums and percussion in the track carry a driving pulse, and the saxophone plays a light melody, ping-ponging between the groove of the rhythm section. Which makes the track very repetitive, catchy," states Reinier.

Repurposing discordant sounds, as an alchemist traveling through time, Reinier sounds at home. Clearing out space, grounding up source material, for the cruise. Truth be told, he's confessed to pulling attitude and sound inspiration from The Lounge Lizards and James Chance. It’s unmistakable and you can hear it. But the combination of new school beat-making tactics, via scientists Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker, who's shown it's far more interesting tossing out the rule book, see Reinier come full-circle with the wide spectrum of his sound jacket.

“When I started making beats, that came from a deep love for hip-hop but also to see if I could create music without my saxophone. In that sense, I’m more of a musician rather than I’m a beatmaker,” says Reinier.

'Lahringen' is an anagram for the Dutch city Harlingen, as used by author Simon Vestdijk in his Anton Wachter novel series, whom is Thijsenterprise's favorite writer. The album is part of his 'Elfsteden' ('Eleven Cities') series of releases, each named after a city in an infamous Dutch ice-skating race which only takes place in brutal winters.

"Sketchy" sees digital release on November 4 and ‘Lahringen’ (which we also love!) is out November 27th on vinyl and on all digital platforms.

Unearthed by The Mighty Zaf for BBE Music, Into A New Journey by Ambiance is an impossibly rare and sought-after private label spiritual jazz masterpiece from 1982 with Latin, Brazilian and Afro overtones. Ambiance was the ‘nom de guerre’ of an ever-shifting jazz collective headed up by Nigeria-born, LA-tutored multi- instrumentalist, arranger, producer and photographer Daoud Abubakar Balewa.

Balewa studied composition and jazz improvisation at the feet of innovators such as Frank Mitchell (Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers), Jackie McLean (Blue Note) and other masters from the golden Blue Note era. Although he favoured alto, soprano and tenor, he was equally happy on flute, keyboards, and Latin and Brazilian percussion. What’s more, he had the knack of using musicians who were bold enough to welcome being part of such multi- faceted sessions: guitarist Jim Lum’s flexibility suits the theme of this album perfectly, as does prolific Japanese soul-jazz drummer Danny Yamamoto; the stunning Hawaiian pianist Kino Cornwell (Yamamoto’s colleague from funk-fusion supergroup Hiroshima); and the wonderful Jean Carn-like tones of Daoud’s wife, jazz vocalist Monife Balewa.

From the band’s reading of Joe Henderson’s modal masterpiece Black Narcissus, through the deep multicultural percussive jazz-dance workout that is the title track, and on to the three-octave vocal embellishments of Monife, on her own composition Something Better as well as on the Chick Correa fusion classic 500 Miles High, nothing here is generic, nothing taken for granted, nothing comfortable or predictable.

All of the half-dozen or so albums recorded and released by Daoud and Ambiance during just six years of frantic creativity between 1979 and 1986 are well worth seeking out, but in BBE Music’s opinion Into A New Journey is the pinnacle: spiritual jazz worthy of the very best practitioners of the genre, by an obscure group of ludicrously talented artists on a tiny, self- financed indie label with an equally tiny promo budget: that’s what great jazz is all about.

Banger alert! "Amazing" is the first song on the forthcoming debut release of FLuiD BouncE, the broken beat meets boogie & soul duo of Birmingham UK based singer, songwriter & keyboardist Colonel Red and producer & DJ Lord Byron.  The full album, 'Chapter 1', is due to be released on November 27 on Inner Tribe. 

"Amazing" is a perfect example of how 'Chapter 1' weaves broken beat and house rhythms with classic soul, boogie and funk. Social commentary is high on the agenda, and rightfully so. Red is a master of the vocal performance and has a knack for writing addictive songs. Lord Byron's progressive beats are a perfect fit.

Colonel Red is well loved among broken beat aficionados for his many collaborations during the genre's Goya distributed golden age, with the likes of Daz-I-Kue, Alex Attias, IG Culture and Bugz in the Attic. Not forgetting his own self-produced debut on the legendary PEOPLE imprint. 

Since then, Red has struck his own path, with releases on Tokyo Dawn, Ink Rebellion and recently Inner Tribe, that widened his sound and appeal.  He has worked with and written for a long list of major artists & legends, including Maurice White, Lenny White, Amp Fiddler, Keith Sweat, Teddy Pendergrass, Anita Baker, Shara Nelson, Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam, Sandra St Victor, Ursula Rucker, Tony Allen, Jon Hassel, Dwight Trible, The Last Poets, and Brian Jackson.

Lord Byron is a veteran DJ, a mainstay of Bruk Up and Rogue Soul nights, whose talents have seen him invited to guest on IG Culture's Co-Op Presents: Selectors Assemble Worldwide FM show and mix series. 

Inner Tribe is the fairly young Adelaide-based label founded by Jules Habib, aka DJ/producer Inkswel, and his partner, singer & song writer Charlie Umami, that in a very short matter of time has racked up a pile of key releases, working with great talents such as J-Soul, Ezroh, Kid Sublime, Ahu, Phat Kat, Jitwam and of course, Colonel Red.
