Århus rarely springs to mind when you think about hubs for electronic music. A key member of @regelbau, an eleven-strong collective operating out of Denmark's second city, Milán Zaks aka DJ Sports is one of several emerging producers credited with its rise as a fertile setting for electronic exploration. Serving up a stellar mix, the Regelbau, @help-recordings and @nohandsrecordings co-owner takes us from otherworldly ambient and beautifully crafted jungle to swinging house and lush breakbeat. He's even thrown in a bit of reggae for good measure.

41. Kiddo

Test subject 1.18 @waspfm observes the ebb and flow of an outlandish and highly complex ecosystem of sound from "distorted biospheres" and "alien landscapes". Traversing through this environment, one becomes immersed within the sonic layers of a cohesive living and breathing biological community. Cyclical tension and angst among organisms pave the way for divine resolve and harmony, the balance becomes disrupted and the cycle restarts. Truly an incredible journey.

"Field recordings or natural soundscapes are, like noise, often unfocused, fragmented and chaotic. This can be gentle and abrasive all within the same breath. A good recording of, say, a meadow will include thousands of layers of living organisms. Even a shallow recording will still pick up larger animals, insects and most commonly birds which are often the focal point. Being given an image of an environment to build around changed my usual process a lot. My image contained an alien landscape complete with otherworldly sky, clouds and green distorted biospheres. This meant that the use of field samples, mostly collected from my immediate environment, would not create the landscape depicted, as they concerned the home and known environments. I changed up the way I look for music instead focusing on different animals I could envision living in this environment. I began researching various song birds that became extinct before archiving could note down their sound. Their bone structure, beak shape and lung capacity all meticulously evolved to create a sound that no longer exists. Archiving is such an important part of recording environments especially as these environments get smaller and quieter with the expansion of cities. Almost every environmental element of this mix, from the rustling of insects to the harsh call of birds is built on hardware. Our first mix of the year is an all-production mix from mysterious artist Lårry. Over the course of an hour, Lårry takes us on an ice-age sci-fi voyage, starting with rolling bass wobblers before showcasing a more cinematic and climatic side to their productions.

Lårry first appeared five years ago through a contribution to Super Hexagon’s mix series and it wasn’t until 2018 that they made their production debut with ‘sys_001’ on UK label Uncertainty Principle. Since then they have returned Super Hexagon with ‘Kauz’ EP and now make their first appearance on Berlin label Awkwardly Social. It comes as no surprise to discover that their inspirations lie mainly outside of the club circuit, instead, drawing influence from computer games and tabletop RPGs such as Silent Hill 1-4, Resident Evil 1-3, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and Pathologic - the latter two can be found on the ‘Nines’ EP.
