Confined Space stems from the idea of repurposing audio material from YouTube, in an artistic process that values quantity over quality. Random videos are selected using different key words and their audio is chopped and compressed into the DAW to be used as compositional elements. Often scrolling down to get the uploads with the least views, this process is both a reflection on the enormous quantity of material that can be found online and an invitation to use and repurpose digital content in new artistic ways. What is inside the database is not important, its size already makes for an infinite output of ideas.

Luca Favaro is an Italian musician and composer. Starting as a classical percussionist, he approaches electronic music composition finding his roots in sound design, club music and field recording. With the moniker T.U. he has published with False Industries (Berlin), Hide Productions (Milan, Udine) and World Canvas (Helsinki) as well as scoring music for installations, theatre and ballet. He currently hosts Desktop Music, a monthly show on radio Raheem where he explores sound design and generative music through original compositions. With the dance-focused project Capiuz, Favaro investigates a more rhythmic approach to his compositions, exploring the more experimental and hypnotic sides of dance music. As a programmer, he has created various Max for Live devices published by Hide Productions in an ongoing series.

“Ice Effect” marks his fourth EP for 2022 and  showcases the Japanese producer’s unique take on Dancehall. The 4 tracks beat around the 100 BPM tempo mark and manage to create an equally-balanced cold and distant, yet colourful and welcoming world, mirroring the image of an alien flower flawlessly preserved in ice, as depicted on the record’s artwork.

Irrealidades is the new album from Mexican scene stalwart Bryan Dálvez, El Irreal Veintiuno on Infinite Machine. Although his reputation is well-established at home through EPs and tracks on NAAFI, Subreal and Infinite Machine itself, Irrealidades comes across as his boldest and most cohesive statement yet.

The album is a kaleidoscopic survey of Mexico’s rich sonic landscape, as well as an ambitious attempt to encompass the country’s historical becoming: from the rich, imagined sounds of pre-hispanic times to its current war-torn reality.

But an academic pursuit this isn’t and this is still very much music for the body. From the get-go, drums burn and rhythms gallop; sharp, aggressive synths insist and prod. Un respiro, the album’s mid-point gives us exactly that, a breather, albeit an emotionally charged one. Soon enough the second half of the record returns to polyrhythmic fury and ravey turbulence. We reach fever pitch on closer Minorías, envisioned by Bryan as a sonic representation of the eschaton: “the last track is merely the end of everything”.

Throughout the record disjointed voices loop endlessly before managing to articulate a single intelligible word. Maybe, Irrealidades seems to say, we are also caught in a loop, unable to break out from the cycle of violence and marching irredeemably (but with healthy curiosity) into The End, when Quetzalcóatl makes his glorious return.

Este set es una colección de producciones propias en diálogo con composiciones de artistas cuyo trabajo concibe una visión ampliada de las posibilidades del sonido. Oscilando los límites entre lo musical, lo atmosférico y la contemplación auditiva, las diferentes piezas de mi autoría que constituyen este set forman parte de corpus artísticos particulares y son el resultado de experimentos sonoros que abarcan desde grabaciones de campo procesadas, canciones realizadas con sistemas de afinación no occidentales, improvisaciones en directo, esculturas sonoras en 3D hasta composiciones generativas creadas con herramientas de código abierto como Pure Data y Sonic Pi. Mi intención con este set es presentar una breve antología del trabajo sonoro que he realizado durante los últimos años. El arte visual es un homenaje a Manuel Felguérez y Pedro Ramírez Vázquez.

César Chirinos Oropeza (@corrupted4ta) es un investigador en cultura digital y filosofía de la tecnología. Es maestro interdisciplinario en diseño, comunicación y tecnología por la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Su trabajo de investigación se centra en la exploración de los fundamentos del acontecer tecnológico y el arte digital desde un enfoque crítico, además, es artista sonoro y crítico decolonial de arte. Ha publicado textos en revistas electrónicas como FLUIDO y en el espacio web [ANTI]MATERIA dedicado a la investigación y exposición del arte digital.
 

En su trabajo creativo, César se centra en la liberación de la tecnología, los enfoques futuristas sobre la espiritualidad, las ecologías virtuales y la disposición discursiva del arte conceptual, así como en las estéticas del internet. Ha musicalizado performances multimedia para diferentes muestras y espacios, y ha mostrado piezas sonoras y trabajos multimedia en varias exhibiciones y festivales. En abril del 2022, presentó su primera exposición individual "Exp(IA)ción" en el Espacio Doble AA de Toluca, Estado de México. Algunas de las piezas de esta muestra formaron parte de la exposición "Vendrán lluvias suaves" exposición conmemorativa del Centro de Cultura Digital.

The 1st Grounded Festival VA compilation will be released in parallel to its 7th edition, happening from 24.8. - 26.8.2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with this years theme PEACE. The VA compilation brings together local and international musicians who have performed at our previous editions or who will present themselves for the first time this year as part of the festival’s lineup.

Peace is a condition for the exercise of human rights - in times of war and violence freedom of expression, the right of assembly, personal freedom, privacy, freedom of religion, mental and physical inviolability and, last but not least, the right to bare life are suspended. Every war is a massive and systematic violation of human rights, its victims are adults and children without a future: killed, missing, raped, tortured, exiled and imprisoned.

At the same time, the enforcement of human rights is a condition for peace. As one of this year's guests, Aida Čerkez, a journalist reporting from the besieged Sarajevo during the 1992-95, says: "Peace, but not at any price." In Palestine, the peace process is a euphemism for colonization by peaceful means, in Bosnia, the Dayton Peace Agreement is another name for the 20-year stagnation of the country and the entrenching of nationalism. Therefore, peace cannot and must not only be a state of the absence of war, but a state of justice and prosperity for all. As the slogan of the Black Lives Matter movement says, “No Justice, No Peace”.

In conversations, lectures and round tables with researchers, analysts and people with experience of war, members of peace movements, journalists, war reporters and artists, we will ask ourselves whether peace is an unconditional value or whether it has a price; what is the international architecture of peace and whether it is still able to respond to the demands of contemporary conflicts; what place do social and economic rights occupy in the international system of protection of human rights and lasting peace; if there is a just war, there is a just revolution - what is the relationship between the two?

The musical part of the festival, following the most current guidelines, presents the most exciting phenomena of post-club, experimental and daring electronic music for the seventh year in a row, this year again at various club locations at AKC Metelkova.
