“Karmacanics” are a independent pop/rock/electronic band from Europe. They are currently pretty much unknown which makes it very nice for me as a remixer to jump in and build a relationship on the ground level. Will they ever get well known? Only time will tell. They gave me complete freedom as a remixer to do whatever I wanted. The original song was a light pop-rock track that was going for that classic old “Beatles” sound from the 60’s. The tempo was 86 and nowhere near the dance zone. I wanted to give them a solid dance mix to use. A few other remixers had already given them full vocal versions somewhere close to the original tempo. I also opted to do a dub vocal mix as opposed to a full vocal version. The finished mix turned out to be a very happy and funky house mix with a touch of good ole’ acid house/techno. I first had to alter the tempo of the vocal parts I used from 86 to 125. (Vocal parts = “Magical Mystery Machine”, “Celebrate Your Dream”, and “Ahh”) The musical bed includes a banging four on the floor kick, a strong snare/clap, funky swing high-hats, Latin percussion, warm electric bass, pop keyboard chord hits, a 90’s style keyboard lead, and a 303 acid synth line.

Many remixes I do I have full control over what type of mix to produce, but on many occasions a remixer is given a certain set of guidelines to go by. I actually like those guidelines for the most part. For this remix Kwanza wanted a true 12" style remix for the clubs. The guidelines were it had to be completely dance floor friendly, the length had to be at least 5 minutes, and every vocal stem had to be used somewhere in the remix. I went for the traditional dance 12" song structure: intro, body, and outro. The production is a blend of hard breaks and minimal dance-techno. Banging drums, low end thumping bass, crisp hats and percussion, and minimal techno synth patterns make up the musical bed.

I just love this song. It's very epic and I wanted the remix to be dance floor friendly, but also very engaging in terms of texture. I couldn't help but think of the great remixes that "Rabbit In The Moon" did for "Sarah McLachlan". I used the vocals with no alteration. The mix is a blend of progressive breaks, acid house, and minimal techno. The intro and verse sections have powerful break-beat drums, trance synth bass, and ambient keyboard pads. The hook sections have four on the floor kicks, bright percussion-hats-snares, and distorted analog synth melodies. The bridge breaks down into a progressive house-trance keyboard filter chord pad pattern and builds up to a climax as the 303 acid line increases in power. From there it goes back into the hook and then slowly builds until the end. This was most definitely one of my favorite remixes that I had the pleasure to work on in 2012! 

Throw Me A Line-The ALBM I'll Be Your Hero Remix

This is one of those remixes that turned out really well.  The original is an indie pop/rock track with a very laid back groove.  I wanted to take the song to the dance floor so a tempo change was needed.  I took the vocals from the original tempo of 75.5 and bumped it up to 125.  Once the vocals were changed I also took some small clips (of the vocals) and loaded them into the sampler.  (“Sing of the lonely”, “eh”, and “Unconsolable”)  I wanted big-room powerful sounds so I really focused on the kick and layered electro synths for that deep bottom-end.  The track is carried along by bright claps-snares and all types of different percussion that are constantly changing throughout the mix.  Last I added some nice synth-pop style keyboard lead riffs and sound effects.

For the most part (these days) I try to remix most songs full vocal.  Every once in a while I will do a dub vocal remix.  This remix falls somewhere closer to the dub vocal remix side of things.  I like the original song, but the pre-chorus and chorus was just too “happy” for the type of mix I was going for.  I opted to use just the first verse and chopped up a few phrases to load into the old sampler.  (“Oh” and “Nah, Nah, Nah”)  The tempo was 140, so I used the good old two-tempo trick to build tension and spice things up a bit.  (70 = dubstep & down-tempo / 140 = club, trance, & break-beat)  The remix flows from dubstep to trance / club to breaks.  The instrumentation consists of strong driving drums, spacey sound effects, low dubstep bass, sub bass drops, arpeggio trance style keyboard melodies, bright percussive lead synth melodies, crystal clear percussion hits, and low driving trance synth bass.
