The first album is always a challenge, when it is compared to the great releases. Expectations - your own as well as those of others - must be met and a little innovation can't be missing. With the EP "All Those Moments" Maurycy Zimmermann alias Mooryc has fascinated both critics and fans alike. Gentle electronica meets up with melancholy and his voice reconciles the relentlessness of the straight tact with quixotic ballads. Unforgettably he stamped his bittersweet song on ""KRL", the strong firstling work of Douglas Greed. From that arose their collaborative project Eating Snow, and in the words of Douglas Greed "a bipolar friendship" and the wonderfully beautiful downtempo track "Siamese Twins ByChoice" that appeared on Bpitch Control. There was also Dapayk who recognized the qualities of Mooryc and released quite recently the limited 10" "Simply" on his Fenou label. And now there is "Roofs" the debut from Mooryc. It is an organic continuation of his work heretofore, that unites everything from then and takes it one step further.

Das allererste Album ist immer eine Herausforderung, wenn man schon an großen Veröffentlichungen gemessen wird. Erwartungen - sowohl eigene als auch fremde - müssen erfüllt werden und ein Stuück Innovation darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Mit der EP "All Those Moments" hat Maurycy Zimmermann alias Mooryc im letzten Jahr Kritiker und Publikum gleichermaßen fasziniert. Sachte Electronica traf dort auf Melancholie, und seine Stimme versöhnte die Unbarmherzigkeit des geraden Takts mit schwärmerischen Balladen. Unvergesslich prägte sein bittersüßer Gesang auch "KRL", das starke Erstlingswerk von Douglas Greed. Daraus erwuchs ihr gemeinsames Bandprojekt Eating Snow, laut Douglas Greed eine "bipolare Freundschaft" und der wunderschöne Downtempo-Track "Siamese Twins By Choice" erschien bei Bpitch Control. Aber auch Dapayk erkannte Mooryc' Qualitäten und veröffentlichte erst kürzlich die limitierte 10" "Simply" auf seinem Label Fenou. Und nun kommt "Roofs", das Debüt von Mooryc. Es ist eine organische Weiterführung seines bisherigen Schaffens, die alles bisher Geschaffene vereint und es ein Stück weiterführt.

Atomnation marks its 100th release with Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends, the stunning debut album from Blomfelt & Narby. The immersive nine-track record arrives on May 27th and is a widescreen listen that fuses acoustic and electronic sounds with loose field recordings and tightly programmed drums.

Finnish-born Henrik Blomfelt grew up in Gaspar Narby's homeland of Switzerland, but the pair met on the dance floor of a pool club in Peckham while studying in London. Gaspar’s indie pop solo project was rewarded with a broad sweep of tastemaker tips from new music and electronica media alike, while Henrik had co-founded Resolution, an audio-visual collective and event series. The two eventually moved in together, but it's only a couple of years later, when Gaspar visited Henrik’s homeland of Finland, that they began making music together. They wrote half of the tracks that appear on the LP there, using an old piano, a cassette recorder found on location and their laptops. The second half was finished back in London.

The artwork's photos were taken by Henrik's brother Mikael on a trip to Mount Etna, Italy. "The surreal colours and vastness of the otherworldly landscape really resonated with us," they explain. "Our writing is mostly instinctive, but notions of colour, texture and space are definitely our focus. We often wonder whether our music is for the club or for the living room, perhaps Mount Etna is the true answer.[laugh]"

Wherever you listen to this emotive album, it cannot fail to resonate because of the way it draws you in close, yet builds expansive landscapes to surround this intimacy. There are beautiful contrasts throughout, such as the malfunctioning machine sounds and perfectly angelic female vocals on 'Peter Is OK Now,' or the frantic nature of the drums on 'Barbara Just Left' which are at beautiful odds with the soul-soothing chords.

Depending on where and when you listen to the likes of 'Trevor Left A Message' you will either ride the suspensory grooves to a higher state of enlightenment or get lost in the sombreness of the bass. As much as tracks like 'Kevin Has Been Thinking About His Taxes Too Much' carry enough weight and dynamism to power a dance floor, there is also an aching vulnerability to it that lends itself more to isolated listening on headphones. Elsewhere, the lo-fi chords and skeletal garage grooves of 'Tiffany Finds Faith On Fridays' might get your head down in a club, but the organic nature of the keys and warming vocal hums also lift your spirits.

Between the album's more propulsive moments, you are brought back down to earth with ambient tracks like the devastatingly insular 'Beth Is Crying' and hauntingly melancholic 'Jim Lost Control.' It is that duality - those off-set layers, opposing textures and the tension between private inner feelings and extroverted dancefloor joy that make this such a powerful album.

Peter, Barbara, Beth & Friends brings together the real and the abstract, the imagined and the lived, into a compelling record that moves you both physically and emotionally.

Van Hai "Dernier amour" Ripperton's No Love Lost Reshape

This track came from a visual collaboration with a mathematical artist who works under the name Cornus Ammonis. He creates simulations of pattern formation, using ideas originally created by Alan Turing in his attempts to explain and model the mathematics of living systems. These systems create beautiful warping interacting layers of simulated substances, and we thought this visual effect could lend itself well to an imagined alien planetary surface with some unknown form of geological process - molten landscapes. It's a slowly evolving hypnotic visual process, so the music has the same form, with a repetitive syncopated two note motif playing under a gradually developing chord structure which becomes ever more layered. It's all about atmosphere and sitting back to let it wash over I think, it's not a sharply defined piece, and it needs to be given some time to develop, but hopefully the result is worth the time you give it.

I used my usual Prophet 8 for the chords, and then layered over some Absynth pads later on, with a Moog Sub 37 bass coming in much later for the main punctuation point, even though that’s a fairly subtle change, I love it when that rumbling low harmony finally arrives after you think it never will. I used some percussive sounds from Felix’s Machine’s sample pack for this, and plenty of semi-generative detailing with Max for Live tools mainly.

After Cornus Ammonis had created a load of stock video sequences using his models, I then passed the footage on to Morgan Beringer (who created the awesome Unbounded video from Emergence). Morgan applied his trademark processing style to the previously raw footage in order to blend and layer, and make the whole visual have a lot more smooth movement and rich organic feel. Sorry that's not a very technical description of what he did, but hopefully you'll know what I mean when you see it!

For the second single from his forthcoming album 'One Hundred Billion Sparks', Max Cooper presents 'Identity'. Minuscule details spiral around immersive acoustics, driven forward by a soothing, muffled kicks and minimal percussion. By manipulating the use of volume throughout the track, Max carves out cavernous acoustics with his familiarly rich palette, this time exploring it within a distinctly angular framework. 

"During my process of isolation to look inward for the basis of the album, I became increasingly aware of the constructs we live inside, the fables we tell ourselves about who we are and the systems which create us. 

It’s hard to accept, but I like the idea that I am only a bunch of malleable constructs. I wanted to tell the story of our personal battle against these pressures of conformity - nationality, religion, social norms, class, peer and parental expectations, we are loaded with constraints which muffle our true personality which is always there simmering underneath, and, in this track at least, eventually bursts through with extreme effect.

The fifth track is called Fünffleck-Widderchen or New Forest Burnet, a diurnal moth with five red spots per forewing. This so cute looking butterfly is highly toxic because it can release hydrogen cyanide. Because of that it is inedible for predators and signals this unmistakably by its metallic-blue colour and the widely visible blood-red spots. I wanted to interpret this toxicity by a hypnotic trip which may encourage you to transcendental thoughts. For that I created polyrhythmic sequences which are sometimes playing triplets, but their transpositions are still in the classic 4/4 scheme. In interaction with its broken beats and the wide Oberheim theme with no clear start or end, it develops its own mental maelstrom.

Das fünfte Lied heisst Fünffleck-Widderchen, ein tagaktiver Nachtfalter mit fünf roten Flecken je Vorderflügel. Dieser so niedlich wirkende Schmetterling ist giftig, da er Cyanwasserstoff freisetzen kann. Dadurch ist er für Fressfeinde ungenießbar und signalisiert dies unmissverständlich durch seine metallisch-blaue Färbung und den weithin sichtbaren blutroten Flecken. Mein Bestreben war es, seine Toxizität durch eine hypnotische Reise zu interpretieren, welche auch zu transzendentalen Gedanken anregen darf. Im Zusammenspiel mit den gebrochenen Beats und dem breiten Oberheim-Thema, ohne klaren Anfang und Ende, entwickelt sich auf diese Weise ein ganz eigener mentaler Sog.
