South London has become an endless wellspring of creativity. Our very own Bradley Zero continues to make things happen with the vinyl-only debauchery of Rhythm Section, and just around the corner 22a Records are turning their penchant for half-slung beats and soul-flecked rhythms into a full blown movement. 

Henry Wu is a member of the latter making steadfast advances with his output. Rewind back to last February's delectable two-tracker for Natural Complexion and the back-to-back Jean Bassa cut for home stable 22a as evidence.

"Just Negotiate" is one of five groove-inducing jams from the Negotiate EP, housed by Alex Nut's HoTep imprint and out on February 16th. Powered by Simeon Jones' lush vocal sways, it teeters gracefully between the crevices of soul and synth-oozing funk. Groove on.

The Swindlers return and not a minute too soon as far as we’re
concerned!  The hardest working duo in house music have had a
mental couple of years playing every club and festival known to
man, having babies, seemingly buying up the entire stock of vintage
studio gear off ebay and thankfully knocking out some banging tunes
on top of all that.  Well all club bangers gratefully received here
at Freerange so with open arms and ears we’re happy to be bringing
you the Figure Of Speech EP.
Just as the non-believers think they know what to expect from these two they’ve thrown a rather large curveball and headed down a different road. Figure Of Speech wears some African influences on its sleeve with a bumping party groove punctuated by some nifty
afro beat keys stabs and just a hint of acid. Victoria’s Secret
treads more familiar Detroit Swindle territory with the boys trademark shuffling beats and larger-than-life side-chained pads bringing the drama. Finally, we have suitably titled Live At The Cosmic Carnival where we’re treated to some peaktime tribal business with rolling bass, dubbed out dancehall science and some nifty conga work. All in all, some fiyah for the dancefloor from a pair of lads who know a thing or two about how to get a room jumping.

South Africa breeds so many new rhythms and electronic music styles at such a fast pace that it’s hard to keep up. This thriving musical ecosystem has produced genres like kwaito, shangaan electro or the South African afro-house style (and its multiple subgenres like durban or bacardi house), but now there’s a whole new genre to add to that list. Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to introduce you to the entrancing gqom style and its biggest champion Jumping Back Slash.

This hard-to-pronounce genre is the latest to come out of this exciting scene and the man making the rest of thee world pay attention is Jumping Back Slash. After moving to South Africa he fell in love with a new sound that was coming out of Durban, where kids fired up cracked copies of Fruity Loops and started reducing afro-house and kwaito to its most basic elements. Everything gets stripped away until all you have is a syncopated beat, a menacing bassline and a few vocal chops thrown in for good measure. The results are minimalistic, dark and hypnotic, and we can’t get enough of it.

Inspired by this fresh wave of club music coming from the South African underground, Jumping Back Slash has been putting out a stream of amazing tracks in the gqom style, and his contribution to the Upper Cuts series confirms that he’s on a roll right now. In true gqom fashion Kanganga is dark, menacing, uplifting and danceable, all at the same time. This repetitive yet unpredictable beat serves as the perfect example of a sound which is still taking its first steps, but is already positioning itself to become the next big thing to come out of the South African dance music scene. Encapsulating the WotNot ethos perfectly, London-based producer SRE's (also know as Sex Rules Everything) music is fun and soulful. It presents its own fresh take on House, with a Hip-Hop soul burning beneath the choppy 4x4 beats.

So far only appearing on WotNot's Dancefloor Sweets Vol.1 compilation (which also featured IMYRMIND, K15 and Glenn Kelly) and the annual WotNot Advent calendar, SRE's low-slung, sexy house rhythms are perfect for deep club vibes or Sunday afternoon headphone sessions. This release serves as further foreplay, with a longer, nastier session set to release next year.

ETML is a 18 year old singer, writer and producer from the suburbs of South West London who is exploding onto the club scene with this summer debut “Bind Me”. 

An instant classic, ETML (or Elliot as he is known among friends) sits well among contemporaries Bondax and Disclosure, and grew up on a musical love of Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim and Jamiroquai. 

Still studying for his A Levels, ETML is juggling his education while participating in sessions with a who’s who of leading electronic producers.
