Truesoul continues 2019 in stunning form, with a fantastic original from Riva Starr and a trio of classy remixes from the Italian master’s ‘Curveballs’ album. 

Almost 15 years deep into his career and the Napoli-born, London dwelling Riva Starr (aka Stefano Miele) remains one of electronic music’s most eclectic selectors, his production repertoire encompassing house, techno, breakbeat and beyond. Making his debut on Truesoul in 2017, his contributions include a memorable collaborative EP with Tiger Stripes titled ‘Sound of the Bettest’ and his fourth album ‘Curveballs’ released in October 2018.

Such is the high regard Adam Beyer holds Riva Starr, that it wasn’t long before a return to Truesoul was on the cards. ‘Jill Wears Black’ leads the package, a masterclass in fleetfooted dynamics as multi-layered strings, undulating bass and punchy percussion rub shoulders throughout the six-minute cut. An inspired composition that’s already highlighted Resistance in Ibiza, Elrow and a host of festivals throughout the summer months.

On the remix front, Truesoul has recruited three of the finest to remix Riva’s ‘Curveball’ originals. Drumcode mainstay Layton Giordani steps up for his first Truesoul outing since 2016, reworking ‘The Hole’ into a throbbing peak-time weapon. Marquis Hawkes, one of the Italian’s favourite producer of late, also joins the project, delivering a glistening, spacey interpretation of ‘Piknik’. Firebrand Harvey McKay delivers a trademark powerful re-rub of ‘Disco Loco’, taking the synths of the original and jacking up the intensity to bring it into peak-time techno territory.

A scene stalwart since the 90s, Drumcomplex is a DJ, producer, label owner and crowd favourite. With a discography that spans from Carl Cox’s Intec and Monika Kruse’s Terminal M to Andre Crom’s OFF Recordings, his tough, funky tech style has continued to impress for 20 years. As a DJ, he regularly travels the world playing at clubbing hotspots on every continent. His own label, Complexed Records, set up in 2014, echoes Drumcomplex’s desire to make music that is clear in its structure and credible in its message. 

Starting with ‘Over You’ Drumcomplex drops a stomping groove over a creeping synth and echoed vocal for maximum dance floor devastation. Title track, Disco, is a lighter affair with bubbling synths and sparse percussion. Hypnotic and relentless, its appeal is hard to miss. Finally, ‘Black’ showcases some complex drum work and a spiky bassline. Peak time power from the German maestro.

This release has featured on Adam Beyer's Drumcode Radio and quickly received support from big names in the house and techno like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Gorgon City, John Digweed, Cassius, Richie Ahmed, Lane 8, Chus & Ceballos and Roberto Capuano.

Layton Giordani crafts his most accomplished work to date with ‘New Generation’, his second album on Drumcode. 
 
Since 2017’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Where It Begins’, the New Yorker has entrenched himself as one of the label’s most vital artists and leader of techno’s new school brigade. At just 27, he’s collaborated with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet on multiple occasions, linked with the legendary Danny Tenaglia for the now-classic ‘Live Again’ and played everywhere from Awakenings, Melt! Festival and Warehouse Project. He’s also lived the Transatlantic life more than most, splitting his time between the Big Apple and Amsterdam, absorbing influences from across the electronic spectrum.  
 
It’s these experiences that inform ‘New Generation’, a masterclass of techno futurism and glistening example of Giordani’s ever-developing talents as a producer. Opening with the shimmering soundscapes of ‘Shinjuku’, a beatless two-and-a-half-minute mood setter, the album swings between timeless multi-faceted dancefloor weapons, and more lilting, ambient techno cuts rips for the golden hour. 
 
Already a favourite of the Drumcode faithful, the album’s title track hits with a swarm of synapsesearing synths that saw it go down a treat at Awakenings Festival, Tomorrowland and Gashouder in the second half of 2019. ‘System Majority’ balances atmosphere and propulsive rhythms on a knife’s edge and featured in Beyer’s DCR 515 radio show. Giordani reunites with the legendary Green Velvet for ‘Life Lesson’, a pulsating roller, which notably features the young New Yorker’s hypnotic vocals on loop. Teaming with friend and fellow East Coaster Avision, ‘Power’ is punchy techno at its finest, driven by energetic stabs and a stirring vocal from Chicago journeyman Cevin Fisher. After playing b2b a string of times, Layton links with good friend Bart Skils for a maiden collaborative track. Driven by a strong melodic lead, ‘Midnight Magic’ typified the moment when the duo played it at Drumcode’s Awakenings event during ADE last year. ‘Feel A Vibe’ is an album highlight centered around plump bass, reverb-heavy sonics, distorted bleeps and a spoken word vocal, which begs for a peak-time rinse. 
 
Elsewhere Giordani demonstrates his breadth with cuts such as ‘Nirvana X’, a lush breakbeat-laden cut; the laser-kissed ‘Translation Lost’, where his musicality is in full view and the progressive-tinged 
‘Memory Fragment’, which reinforces the expansive Drumcode sound palette. The beautiful ‘Human Error’ closes out the work, as muffled horns, delicate keys and sparse bed of percussion unify for a momentous finale.

Bristol-based DJ and producer MOOXX is new to the scene but already making waves. He’s been included in sets at major clubs and festivals from the likes of Gorgon City and has been featured on Drumcode Radio and Hardwell On Air. He has rapidly gathered support from some of the world’s top DJs - Pete Tong, Richie Hawtin and Luciano to name a few - and has upcoming releases on UK house label Perfect Havoc.


His penchant for music is longstanding. Growing up, he was immersed in the sounds of his father’s hi-fi rigs, absorbing everything from Massive Attack to Jimi Hendrix. Teenage years were spent writing songs and touring England as the lead guitarist in a band. This multi-genre influence and passion for melodic guitar leads is still present in his music today; but ultimately the lure of the dancefloor and the positivity and buzz surrounding the electronic music scene has guided his purpose towards house and techno production.


His music offers a rich palette of sounds and influences, from driving techno grooves to mesmerising house vocals and soothing melodies. Each song is a journey through cherry-picked acoustics expressed in his signature style, always with the core focus of contributing to the dancefloor community that has been such a positive force in his own life and that of so many others.
