THE EVIL DEAD — A Witch House Album

Sam Raimi's 1981 film rebuilt as a 24-track witch house concept album. Dark reverb on everything. The cabin as a sonic space. The forest as an instrument. The book breathing in the dark.

Track 01 is the warmest sound on the album. Five friends driving to a cabin in the woods. Ash is happy. Linda's hand in his. This is going to be good. That warmth is the first thing the album takes from you, and it takes it slowly, track by track, as the reverb accumulates and the drone deepens and the night goes on.

The possessed tracks are the evil using familiar voices as precision instruments. Cheryl's voice for Ash. Shelly's voice for Scott. Linda's voice — saved for last, because Linda's voice is the sharpest thing the evil has — for Ash. The horror is the recognition underneath the wrongness. Just enough of the real person still audible to make it unbearable. The book and the forest tracks have no human vocals. Just drone without rhythm. Tone without melody. Pages moving in rooms with no wind.

Two endings simultaneously. Track 23: Ash walks into the dawn light — destroyed and alive, the forest behind him still watching, he doesn't look back, the light is real. Track 24: The book alone in the dark of the cabin after he leaves. The pages moving. No wind. The evil didn't end. It paused. Someone will come to this cabin again. Someone always comes. The book will be here. The book has always been here.
