I remember feeling so comfortable with the space and the crowd who were up for good sound system pushing fun going freely through everything from d&b and elektro to freetek and jungle. “narratively, it explores this shifting state of being within a period of my life that is defined by change, and how change is not necessarily linear when you look at it up close. i am trying to reckon with the idea of change starting as a small tinder, which then gradually grows into a fire, fire symbolizing transformation, like in eastern medicine.” - mui mui 

we’re back in new york this week to spotlight the brilliant dj, promoter & dancer mui mui. the promotor behind the techno casa parties (‘but not limited to techno by any means’ she says), mui mui has hosted residencies on noods radio and hong kong community radio where she’s been able to showcase the full scope of her sounds from the club to the home or digging deep into different narratives such as “something silly like a computer gaining sentience, or a dog getting lost and finding its way back home, but there’s always a beginning, middle, and end.” describing herself as ‘spiritually from bristol’, mui mui’s sound is influenced by the likes of hessle audio, the klf, autechre, mary anne hobbs, the ogs from detroit and many more. this diversity in inspiration is channeled throughout her mixes ~ on this occasion she steps away from the 140 sound she’s been playing a lot recently to dive into the 90-95 bpm wormhole.

Our next mix comes from Montreal’s enigmatic DJ Frog. Dusty loops and crushed grooves are the highlight of this Doo Records mainstay. Her selections and productions flutter between the minimalist zones of house and dubby techno. It takes in a whole host of unreleased material from Cheeks, Hashman DJ and sometime studio collaborator SnP 500 and stays resolutely buried in swampy sonics and swirling dub undercurrents. Subtlety is key to how moods are built up, then fade away. There are no big moments, just a slow teasing of tension that grows ever more irresistible.
