A lot of things in this world are a product of chance, well, at least until they happen. This work is a result of an accidental meeting with my friend, who suggested to live-score the silent movie. Usually when I’m offered to make a live score for silent movies it is about black and white pictures from 1920-30-40s. But this case was different and unusual: movie was shot in 1972, it was in colour and its main character was cheap New York hotel «Monterey». The movie was made with the money of a local pimp by the radical director Chantal Akerman.

Though I've learned about some of the facts of the movie after the recording, what I've found out was already enough to say «yes».

I was offered to see the movie beforehand so I could get to know it and prepare in advance. I said that there was no need for this, it would be great to watch it with the viewers for the first time during the performance. Well, I did watch it and I liked the movie a lot. It’s a rare chance to tell about it and not be blamed about spoiling the plot. There is no usual plot. It’s a form of recorded “being” of a hotel with guests or without them, camera is either still or slowly moves across the gloomy corridors. The great formula “the form is a frozen meaning” has a literal realisation here. I’m glad that I met my friend by chance , got to see the movie, got to score it, and maybe by chance you will come across it, watch the movie and/or listen to the soundtrack.
