q. pls introduce yourself:

a. Hi! I’m Ryan aka ghosttropics and I think most people on here know me as “that person who is in the comment boxes of all the ambient releases on bandcamp”. Mostly I’m just a huge music nerd/listener/dancer, but I try to write about the music that care about as much as I can as a way to engage with the community a bit more and to give back to the artists who bless me with the music that brings so much to my life. Which is how you guys found me! This is only the second mix I ever made and I’ve since worked on a couple more, and it’s becoming this very fulfilling new thing in my life that I look forward to exploring a bit more.

q. is there a story behind the mix?

a. First of all I just wanted to thank you guys for having me here and giving me this opporunity to work on this mix, which ended up being very meaningful and downright therapeutic for me to make. It is dedicated to my late best friend Blakely, and also to anyone who lives with that soul deep and unnameable feeling of missing someone, but also feeling them with you all the time. At the very centre of the mix (both figuratively and at the literal halfway point) is a track of Blakes that I hadn’t been able to bring myself to listen to for years. I always thought it was one of the most beautiful things I ever heard and just the purest audio distillation of everything I loved about my friend, and as soon as the mix started to come together I knew it was the right time to bring it back into my life. Everything from there just seemed to come together on is own as if guided by a gentle hand.

The feeling I tried to capture in this mix is not simply sadness because grief is SO much more than that. It’s about how that sadness can also be so deeply intertwined with a feeling of indescribable gratitude and joy in having known a person, and it’s about all the beautiful and unexpected ways we can keep them with us throughout our lives. To me, this mix is exactly that. A way to share the story of my friend with the world and feel closer to him, and I hope that listening to this can give others the space to remember and relate to their own experiences in a way that feels meaningful as well.

q. what’s the best way to enjoy your mix?

a. As is my answer to most things: lying down, eyes closed, cuddling a cute dog. But really, wherever works best for you! 

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

a. I found the most beautiful/perfect antique rocking chair with a rocking footrest on the sidewalk a couple months ago and I swear I could not even conceptualize a better reading chair. I refused to buy one for years because I wanted it to be perfect (I read nearly as much as I listen to music) and part of me feels like I willed this thing into reality. 

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

a. I’m thinking about maybe starting some sort of newsletter as my friends keep telling me to do, but for now I’m just gonna keep writing my little bandcamp reviews and making more mixes, cause that’s what’s feeling good right now. And despite my past promise to myself to never become a DJ (half joking) maybe buy a controller and start figuring out how to do some of this stuff live at some point!

I, Cavallo

Disco-Renegades. House-Eccentrics. Purveyors of electronic freemasonry. Ok, I might exaggerate a bit here, but the Sex Tags Mania label has been Tagged many things. “They just don’t care”, one fan once said in an interview. Well, they do care, do what they believe in, being die-hard vinyl lovers and all. Ever persistent in their curiosity for new and old sounds, the Norwegians have been running their Bergen-based label since 2004. DJ Sotofett and DJ Fett Burger are also great artists, just take a look at their<a href="http://sextags.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> work</a>. This is a place where the aesthetic of old-school Chicago flyers clashes with black and white mutations of comic heroes of yonder: No wonder their Tag line runs "Graffiti can't be stopped.". DJ Sotofett's mix is an assemblage of some of his  classic house favourites: Be sure not to miss the part where he does his shout-outs in Norwegian.

Nr. 36: DJ Sotofett (Sex Tags Mania)

Diogo (Guimarães, 1988) started DJing in 2011 but the number of gigs seriously multiplies only after his move to Lisbon in 2016. Here he becomes part of the Extended label's core, creates and directs the PISTA! magazine and begins producing music. In 2017 he promotes with Mário (Lisbon, 1982) the Aurora series of parties at EKA, where they also play together and become aware of the roots of their future production. Mário has been making music since the late 90s, he's a DJ since 2007, Moreno Ácido since 2016, the year that appears to contain all the seeds for the present EP.

At Mário's place (General Roçadas avenue in Lisbon) they test beats, samples, ideas. "We got along well and decided to try producing an EP". Title track "Roçadas" comes out fully formed in just one day from an acid line and Brazilian funk samples they stumbled upon in Mário's computer, but a digidub vibe is really what gets the flow going. At the peak, a sort of utopia designed from some kind of Rave essence, identified via the string ambience which shoots emotion into the future.

"On the same day we lay the foundations for Be Quicka Or Be Dread": bassline, cuíca and whistle appeared so spontaneous that this track was immediately taken for granted and was the last one to be finished. Tight mechanical march most of the time, layers of percussion, assertive bass in a track of its own, allowing the several blocks of groove to roll freely. Towards the end, gradual untangling of the structure.

"Verde Grama" was initially intended as a version of the K&T Mix of ”This is Acid (A New Dance Craze)" (Maurice), but the tone and cuts in the main horn stabs tell a different story, still inspired by the original material, sure, successful in capturing its spirit, but clearly operating from a new generation of components and their respective contemporary interpretation. 2019, people.

Korg's Minilogue was used to lay out most of "Coisa Leve", balanced between the dreamy, trance-y initial crescendo and the broken beat that easily takes this into robotic territory. A splash of "E2-E4" (Manuel Göttsching) comes and goes, leaving a light trace of 1989 Italian House and a gradual exit which itself indicates the exit of the club.

The Guestlist Network is an A3, full-colour, monthly music publication. Our main intent is the promotion of upcoming mainstream and underground music events within London. As well as this, our magazine features music interviews and lifestyle sections. Founded in 2009, The Guestlist Network is a monthly publication across a range of media platforms, from print to web to mobile (iPhone app) and outdoor.  Our free monthly newspaper is distributed at tube stations, Universities, Clubs/Bars and shops across London, serving as guide to going out, clubs, events, festivals, music, fashion, movies and general light hearted banter.
