PREMIERE: Chalo - Recollection [More Rice]

Passing through the crowded streets, all faces blurred into one underneath the dim street lamps. They pushed their way through, navigating the masses of people that ebbed and flowed from side alleys, stairways and shop doors; how long it would take them to reach their destination was yet to be determined. Amidst the sea of faces, they suddenly caught a glimpse of someone they recognised, a face they knew well, really well... A strange feeling suddenly stirred inside of them and a lump formed in their throat - it was their own face they'd seen; an exact mirror image of themselves. 

Since their inception Bangkok's More Rice Records have been on a mission to spotlight Asian artists operating in the electronic music underground. Having taken a break from their release schedule to focus on opening a record shop and a local hub for dance music lovers in the city, the label are now back with their first release of 2022. Keeping things local, they welcome Chalo, who made his production debut on Boiled Wonderland at the end of last year, for what marks his sophomore release. Anemoia showcases his engineering background, with three atmospheric, textural tracks that blend rolling breaks and emotive bass, backed by a remix from Planet Euphorique boss D. Tiffany.

More Rice returns with their first release of 2022, after a busy year of opening their Record Store with Thai artist Chalo.

Remaining true to his engineering background Chalo weaves between a realm of atmospheres in this latest release, Anemoia EP. Comprised of distorted snares, emotional roaring basslines and rolling breaks. Release comes equipped with a remix from Planet Euphorique’s D. Tiffany.

Quest is one of those new school selectors who have taken the art of crate digging to an all-new level. Italian-born, Berlin-based but having spent time in London working at the legendary Vinyl Pimp, he has long been mining the depths of everything from UKG to outré techno, Italian hip hop to long-lost house. Importantly, he uses those sounds to tell his own stories, often with an air of mystery and intrigue that plays out like an adventure into the unknown. 

Many mixes follow a traditional arc of increasing energy levels but in this week's podcast, Quest plays with those expectations to build up and then pull back, threading together minimal rhythms then raw and crunchy wave sounds. Twisted electronics lead into celestial acid and the smooth and seductive sits next to the dark and edgy. It's a low-key, low-lit selection that draws from mutant strains of house, techno and electro that are both futurist and dystopian. Quest might be his moniker, but it is also a perfect description of his mission.

The rain was pouring down hard, it had been all day. There was a dim light which flickered in the window at the end of the street, everything else was dark but for the occasional glimmer of a car passing by up on the hillside in the distance. He wondered how it had come to this - out here in the middle of nowhere. If someone had asked him whether he might find himself in such a situation he'd of laughed before - yet now here he was.

It was a cold night, another bitter winter. He could only hope that he'd find his way back home by the time the warmer months came around. Trouble didn't last that long - it couldn't could it?

Soon everything would be normal again, at least he hoped.

DOTT features on a new split EP from More Rice - the Thailand based record label which continues to evolve and grow from strength to strength as it showcases innovative musicians and artists from across Asia. They team up with Walls & Pals for a special release.  This new record features a collection of deep. playful, experimental House music.
