What would happen if Boards of Canada made a glitch album using iPads and free running modular patches? This, probably. A focus on soundtrack-era aesthetics and interesting tangents, rather than an all-out assault on the brain.

Think of it as 15 tracks on a worldwide journey through faceless airports, industry and rurality, ending up at sunrise on a private beach. Lots and lots of atmosphere, intense and aurally challenging at times [but never tear-your-head-off-glitch], melody and atonality. 

Glitch and IDM albums tend to be atonal, hard-to-listen affairs. I hope this comes in at the more aesthetic end of the spectrum! Note that the first two tracks (up to about 8 minutes) are also the two least tonal!

today's sound, for me, was more about process and learning than final outcome. i paid more attention to the routing and my goals rather than the sound.

what i wanted to do was get the make noise rene sequencer to work nicely with long, slow envelopes. the key to doing that is NOT using SNAKE mode and making sure the rene is being clocked by long gates, not triggers.

the answer to that, in my system, is to use pamela's workout clock module set to a very slow tempo with a couple outputs programmed to be long gates. pamela's is really great for that, the ability to adjust the width of the gates on the outputs... it doesn't just send triggers.

it worked pretty well...  and rene drives a verbos harmonic oscillator and an e350. it's all running through the new make noise erbe verb, which i just picked up this weekend.

rene is one of the most mysterious modules in my system. it's easy to grasp on the most basic level, but quickly gets pretty complex. i have not come to grips with it yet.

another experiment with the mutable instruments clouds module. this time looping and processing a metalophone with some modulation on clouds via a make noise wogglebug and doepfer a118 random generator.

when i was making this sound i realized i had some gain stage problems and the input was quite noisy and the recording low. i recorded it anyway and then left it overnight, intending to trash it in the morning. however, as these things often happen, i quite liked it this morning and decided to play up the noise and just keep it lo-fi.

it's a simple sound patch execution, as i come to grips with Clouds, but it's definitely a module capable of some beautiful things.
