100 years ago, power is formally handed over to new Irish Government

The shootings in Derry on Bloody Sunday lasted less than 10 minutes but cast a long shadow over generations. Thirteen people were shot dead and at least fifteen people were injured when the British army's parachute regiment opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in Derry city on Sunday 30th January 1972. An initial inquiry exonerated the soldiers, but the victims' families declared this a whitewash and pressed for a fresh investigation. In 2010, the Saville report found none of the victims did anything that posed a threat and the shooting was not justified. But the families find themselves still struggling to get the justice they want for their loved ones. The UK government is planning to prevent prosecutions in Troubles related cases, potentially meaning no one responsible for the deaths on Bloody Sunday will ever stand trial. As the 50th anniversary approaches this weekend, our reporter Una Kelly has been speaking to some of the families.
