Program Note

This composition served as an exercise in exploring the world of micropolyphony. It draws significant inspiration from Ligeti, particularly his Lontano, which utilizes a canonic structure that builds and collapses, and Atmospheres, which features large blocks of more of dense harmony. The piece incorporates extensive divisi writing for strings, dynamically shifting, accelerating tremolo textures, feathered beaming, and glissandi that move between massive harmonic blocks.
Narratively, I sought to evoke the concept of time travel. In the first 16 bars, written for the brass section, I aimed to create a sense of oscillation, waveforms, and reverse playback through small crescendos that abruptly stop, using rests for the players to breathe. Following this, the woodwind section introduces a mysterious and complex harmony, gradually fading out as a large, harmonic, divisi sound with small intervals on top of one another fades in, symbolizing the traversal of time through a mass of matter. The piece creates a feeling of inescapability on page six, where the dynamic morphing of alternating natural playing and tremolos is achieved by having each desk of string players play the opposite of the one next to it, from top to bottom. Since there is currently no recording or realistic MIDI mock-up of this piece, experiencing it in a live setting would be of particular interest to listeners, especially contemporary composers. The intricate textures, dynamic shifts, and complex divisi writing are elements that are difficult to fully capture through digital playback, making the live performance an essential experience for appreciating the nuances of the composition.These blocks of sound culminate in a glissando leading into a tonal C Major harmonic structure, meant to convey the completion of a time travel mission. We then hear another segment of canonic structure, this time played by the woodwinds, each performing a descending motif, evoking the image of the Time Machine gently descending back to the ground. The ground itself is represented by the lower woodwinds, which also play the descending motif in canon, but begin each repetition at a higher pitch. As these lines approach one another , they converge into a pianissimo glow of light, abruptly interrupted by a dramatic forte echo, foreshadowing the powerful conclusion. This is followed by another Ligeti-inspired canonic texture, culminating in a dramatic fortissimissimo swell.

The composition is delving into the world of serialism. presenting a playful take on atonal music that seeks to demonstrate its potential for joy and musicality, challenging the notion that it is mere "Katzenmusik" as some might believe. 
From a narrative perspective, as I composed, I envisioned Snow White stumbling upon the cottage of the seven dwarves, imagining how these peculiar yet jolly little men might interact. The atonal language I employed helps underscore the quirky nature of this scenario, while the call-and-response qualities, along with articulations like staccatos, lend a sense of humanity to the piece, capturing the playful and human-like essence of the dwarves.

Program Note

This composition consists of two sections, each exploring aspects of Arvo Pärt's tintinnabuli technique. The overall atmosphere of the first section is spiritual, with the traditional minor scale and homorhythmic writing (incorporating a subtle rhythmic displacement here and there) giving it a distinctively Western sound. The second section also employs a homorhythmic tintinnabuli structure in the string writing, which serves as an accompaniment to a flute playing more ornamented phrases inspired by Middle Eastern music.
