Blue Melon. I came up with the name after getting in bed one night and staring at the ceiling for too long, thinking about the meaning of art in my life. Over the past eight months, ‘Blue Melon’ has developed into the idea of being other than what appears to the outside world. This concept was fundamental to shaping the sounds of the EP. In a genre-bending sequence, the EP challenges common assumptions about continuity in music creation and provides a multitude of sonic textures able to resonate with a diverse, worldwide audience.

As a producer, I am inspired by electronic music, trip-hop and abstract hip hop, blending synth sounds into my creations and using samples as vehicles to generate genre-bending tracks. Lyrically, I take cues from the verbal virtuosity of rappers like André 3000, Childish Gambino, Missy Elliott and Ladybug Mecca. I am influenced by the voices of Joan Baez, Italian singer Mina, and Nina Simone. 

I am thankful that ‘Blue Melon’ has helped me rediscover my artistic capacity. After the positive reviews of Shunaji as an emerging artist, I wanted to present a self-reflective body of work. I expanded my production skills to incorporate live instrumentation, with Sascha Create (Brother’s Testament) on drums and Marla Mbemba (Yazmin Lacey) on bass. ‘Nighthawks’, the second track in the EP and my debut as a singer, is a painting of social realism, desire and loss. ‘Curtains’, the final track on the EP, mirrors the sharp-tongued attitude of ‘Red Honey’, with an old school feel that complements its pressing bars.

A Quest Called Tribe begins with the series of portraits drawn by Stéphane Carricondo in 2017 dedicated to Hip Hop legends.
As close partner in art Medline proposed to create a soundtrack for them, and first interpreting ATCQ's classics with elements of the past, present and future.

The best way to materialize this multidimensional tribute was obviously a vinyl. And it's the one we unveil today.

On the visual side:
ATCQ's portraits are composing the front cover and, assembled into a great scene, are printed on a colorful A2 poster. Stéphane Carricondo's natural lines are highlighting each member's soul map. The alchemy of the dark ink on emptiness gives to them an impressive sparkle of life .

On the musical side:
The classic themes are transformed into a polymorphic fusion, were jazz, funk and soul from the original sample sources converse with Tribe's characteristic beats. Medline added a hint of his magic, unique rhythms, improvisations, arrangements, original orchestration and inspired melodies.

The album is an ode to the band that marked both artist's life and mind. A cultural print and school of sound that designed Hip Hop foundations. With a blooming expression Medline and Stéphane Carricondo are going to the roots of ATCQ in a quest for the tribe.

Excited to premiere this brand new beat, and share the accompanying video, lifted from Dan Jose's forthcoming tape "Saccade" . 62 minutes of Corona Virus induced psychological turmoil and political chaos embedded on magnetic tape. Cassette and digital released on July 31st 2020.

Dan Jose is a Bay Area USA born & raised, London UK based producer, photographer, b-boy and co-founder of London dance & DJ collective, #UNiTY.  Words from Dan below on 'Saccade' and "This's No Flu". Plus as an added bonus, a brand new mini-video reflecting more recent developments. 

Saccade? Saccade: a quick, simultaneous movement of both eyes between two or more phases of fixation.

I started this project in Early March when I was re-covering in self-quarantine after contracting Corona Virus. While isolated, my crewmate challenged me to make 19 tracks. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, I started. This was before lockdown even began in the U.K. Fast forward 3.5 months here and here we are. All of the songs are a sort of quarantine time capsule. It’s a soundscape of what it was like (and still is like) trying to ingest this bad-tasting soup of political chaos, intense confusion, sadness, anger, tiredness, contradiction, despondency, humour, anxiety, fear, boredom, hope, loneliness and depression.

Saccade is a reference to the anxiety we feel as our eyes rapidly dart around digital screens, endlessly inhaling social media feeds on our phones and computers, while trying to process them before the next second’s harrowing scroll.

It's my attempt to soundtrack the psychological turmoil of the last few months while throwing comical jabs at the increasing fervor of the culture wars and political ineptitude growing across the U.S. and U.K. 

Sonically this project samples heavy from European prog rock, acid-fuelled euro-jazz and U.S.soul. It breathes major influences from Bay Area Rap, Stones Throw’s early hip-hop days, L.A. beatsy business, London’s dance music scene & some lil B for good measure.

This one in particular was a feeling that something more than a biological disease is ripping through us. The video toys with the idea that some predatory entity is fanning this confusion among the herd, turning the herd against itself while it lurks waiting to make its kill.
