Club Mix for Europe Tour Winter 2011

The streets of Mexico vibrate to the rhythm of Cumbia music that booms out of the giant sound systems of the Sonidos. The Sonideros, the DJs who mix the music and talk over it have now become famous right across Latin America but the roots of Mexican Cumbia are in the tough barrios where crime and poverty have inspired many of its lyrics.

Cumbia came to Mexico as the folk music of Colombia in the 1950s but the Mexicans couldn't dance to it, so they slowed it down and then gradually transformed it. Mexican Cumbia's hypnotic, dragging rhythm captivated Australian DJ and musician Moses Iten and, after gaining an international reputation as a pioneer in the creation of a style called Cumbia Digital, he was invited to perform in Mexico. This program is the story of his journey across Mexico and into the heart of Cumbia.

SACA LA MOIS DJ!! (a.k.a. Moses Iten) is a Melbourne-based DJ who has toured all over Australia and the world as a Cumbia and Bass specialist, playing tropical music from his vast crates of vinyl and digital dubplates.  As a producer Saca La Mois DJ!! is best known as CUMBIA COSMONAUTS, and with Christoph H. Mueller (Gotan Project/Roedelius/Plaza Francia) is part of the THE SWISS CONSPIRACY.  Saca La Mois DJ!! is also a co-founder of the CUMBIA MASSIVE platform showcasing DJs and producers of tropical electronic music inspired by Mexican sound system culture, and recently assisted in the English translation of the book Ojos Suaves/Soft Eyes: Sound System Cumbia from Mexico to the World by Mirjam Wirz.  Saca La Mois DJ!! mixes have been commissioned by national radio in Australia (ABC RN), Germany (Funkhaus Europa), Austria (FM4), and until recently was host of Space Is The Place on Melbourne's top music station PBS 106.7 FM.  By day, Moses is doing a PhD on DJ performance at RMIT University in Melbourne.  The Saca La Mois DJ!! mission is to keep learning and sharing music from all over the globe, exposing Melbourne to unreleased and undefined new sounds sourced straight from producer to you on the dancefloor.
