Following a series of memorable appearances on Casco’s Music Control and Bordello A Parigi, Miss Plug Inn teams up with Norwegian cosmic disco veteran Jarle Bråthen for a double dose of Italo Pop on Funnuvojere Records.

Under Neon Lights is an uplifting funk track buoyed on a surge of nostalgic synth, in which love seems to find itself again. On the B side Girls of The Night has just the right amount of hard synths to bring us back to the electro cosmic sound of the early 2000s.The hip-house vocals are the cherry on top of this delicious cake. 

A chugging bass line, acoustic drums, fragments of piano house and tripped-out trance waves distinguish Budino’s remix of Under Neon Lights. Omer’s remix of Girls Of The Night conjures a Miss Plug Inn in leather attire. This is a rather uptempo remake for late night dance floors. Check out Bråthen’s Rabbagast remix for a Hi-NRG club banger.

LYO Presents : Driving Blind (Vol. 3) Snippets // OUT 16/12/2022

The legendary Robotnick (a nickname Maurizio Dami assumed in the 80s) is a towering name in Florentine music and someone who very much defined the early disco scene thanks to a superb run of enduring club cuts, not least his seminal 'Problèmes D'amour'. Although he is now in his 70s, he is still kicking out essential jams. His music features plenty of the arpeggios that have always given his music its character, coming on labels like Permanent Vacation, Clone, Bordello a Parigi and Bosconi Records. Few artists understand analogue machines and dance floor mechanics like this man, as he proves once more with this, his eighth studio album.

The concept of ‘Simple Music’ is to craft tunes for any setting. It is about combining traditional music parts, chords, melodies and songs to make music that is varied and vibrant and constantly evolving. Says Alexander, "Riffs and grooves are not endless, and when you are my age, you may have heard them already. I am having more and more trouble finding interesting tracks for myself, so I felt the need to produce “simple” music that generates genuine feelings in a music scene that can be averse to risk."

Seductive disco-house opener 'Babel' is about the difficulties of understanding each other, even if we speak the same language and culture. The vocoder vocals take centre stage next to lush chords, then 'It Is So Easy' has a smug character in the vocal refrain and a sneering attitude in the verses that is playful and characterful next to the rugged and punchy drum grooves. The brilliant 'Why' is built on elastic electro-disco and muses on a lover’s inconsistency, while the space disco of 'Underpass' is a dark vision of a late-night walk that channels the original Robotnick sound of the early 80s.

The heartbroken robot lullaby 'Virtual Empathy' is about "the empathic feelings induced by mainstream TV to manipulate mass consensus", whilst 'I Want To Know' finds Robotnick describing his dreams and wondering about their meaning over funky bass twangs and serene disco sounds. Then comes the only instrumental 'Intro-Robo' with its multi-layered arpeggios and the magnificent title track, which captures the whole essence of the album with taught retro bass, icy hi-hats and stiff rhythms that will jerk any floor into action.

Simple Music is a masterclass once more from the studio wizard that is Alexander Robotnick.

The room was empty yet still the music bellowed loudly and echoed. Stood over by the front left stack he began to sway and move in time with the beat of the drum which throbbed and reverberated inside the large bass bins. Soon the room would begin to fill with people who listened and loved it all as much as he did, yet he was not here for them. The only person he came here for was himself, to feel the noise as it pulsed through the very core of what was left of him.

Some people would forget this night but not him. He remembered every single one, the empty rooms before and afterwards, the smiling faces and the songs which blared loud from the front left stack.

PBR Streetgang are remixed by Hardway Bros on a new EP for Kurtz, a groovy cosmic affair which leans heavily on the raw era of acid house which came before. It’s been nine years since Antoni Maiovvi released Trauma on Bordello A Parigi. Since then, and before, the Bristol born artisan has been honing and refining his audio craft with explorations into electronics, soundtracks and rock. Now, in his latest musical incarnation, Maiovvi returns with Birds of Paradise. This avian themed four tracker is beyond anything you’ve heard from this synthesizer wizard. Complex, deep and layered, the EP is testament to a talent rarely heard. From the sheer elation of “Flycatcher”, which pivots and weaves, the listener is taken away. Throbbing rhythms and astral melodies are unfurled, arpeggios rumble as key scale ever higher in the heady notes of “Widowbird”. A steady kick is the morning song of “Streamertail”, warm computer tones scudding next chords that trill with optimism. Birdsong, a feature of the EP, is ever present in this agile and textured close. Drawing on his predilection for movie scores, “Quetzal” completes this feathered foray. Pulsating, drums offer the updraft for a spread of sounds and shape to takes to the wing. A unique record from an artist soaring to ever greater heights.
