For your sake, we hope you’re up for a challenge. An outback jungle where distorted sonics and fast-pace rhythms are the sustenance on offer. On the surface, our dusty jungle appears a lovely haven for every head in the land.

What’s the matter? You look a little ‘Stressed’. ‘Nervous’ even. Could it be that persistent, spine-shattering sub wub? Catches up with you, doesn’t it? Add in an unrelenting 303 rendered rich in resonance. Feeling it now, aren’t you?

How about that in the other direction? Soul-shaking kick thuds, ear-pricking gated vocal pads, tenacious, shifting arpeggiated synths. You’d best do as you’re told and “Put the drums On The Shelf” if you know what’s best for you. See that over there? See, it belongs to the boss. He doesn’t like it when people aren’t Dancing around his Stray Ute. Sure, the jungle birds inside might sound cute but you'll change your tune when it’s coming nearer. Gaining velocity. Gathering steam. Barrelling toward you. Don’t you worry. Or do. Just be ready. Ready for drums befitting a true jungle. Ready for sliding and prodding bass notes; each more paint-peeling than the last. Ready for overdriven percussion smashes; each more sinister than their predecessors. Reverb-bathed idyllic cuts, striking hybrid synths. Really think you can handle it?

Maxy Cozy has other ideas. His euphoric chords will lull you. Trick you. Make you think the belligerence is behind you. Wrong. You’ll be brought back to earth with a smack in the mouth for thinking you’re capable of managing. Long bass notes fortify, stabbing with malice. Innocent-seeming sounds turn instantly unforgiving. You didn’t think you’d get through it without a scratch, did you?

Ekzander - Stressed (Nervous)

We are happy to welcome Canadian producer So Durand to the Choki Biki Family! The Ottawa native has supplied us with a 4 track EP comprised of Breakbeat, Jungle and Rave sounds that ends with an epic half-time Bonobo-esque masterpiece.

‘This Unruly Kingdom’ is the perfect transitional tool for both your Breaks and Drum & Bass DJ, blending the two genres together and sitting at around 160bpm.

The opening track Disons Que is reminiscent of early liquid Drum & Bass producers such as Bailey, Artificial Intelligence and Squarepusher. It combines melodic sounds with a deep bass and relentless breakbeat!

Following up is Take Me Back There, an early 90’s sounding Rave track with it’s Piano Stabs, Amen Breaks, Dub samples and 4 to the Floor drop.

Next is the titular TUK (This Unruly Kingdom). TUK is definitely one for the Drum & Bass and Jungle heads. So Durand’s North American heritage comes through clearly here with his use of high pitch vocal samples. However, it’s heavy Drum & Bass drop would definitely be heard in a Bristol basement.

Finally, So Durand ends his EP with LIES, an atmospheric hip-hop style track similar to acts such as Hudson Mohawk, Kanye West, Bonobo or Clap! Clap! thanks to his use of brass samples, broken vocal stings and wonky percussion. Wait for the second drop on this before you write this piece of genius off.

This Unruly Kingdom is out on Choki Biki Records on the 18th of February.

Quarantine Sonic Squad is a collective uniting many electronic producers and musical activists in France (and beyond), born under the epidemic era and brought together by Tim Karbon. Its aim is to create a musical corpus that has its roots in today's electronic / club music phenomenon, regardless of genre attributions of any kind.

QSS VOL. 2 "LOCKDOWN COMBAT" is our new militant album, following the initial "DAL de Vivre" project which was thought as a musical tool to gather funds and waving public attention upon bad housing problematics in France, increased by the COVID-19 pandemic. This first opus was released in May 1st of 2020 & quickly gained critical / media acclaim from the like of Resident Advisor, CouvreXChefs, SeekSickSound, Dure Vie...

After uniting our energies to work with the DAL - Droit Au Logement ("right to housing") french association, which is helping oppressed and homeless people to get safe spaces to live in, we are now joining forces with the BAAM, another solidarity collective based in Paris. They are providing to all refugees & migrants a juridic, cultural and social support through french classes, administrative help and housing solutions, among many other things. They have also created a LGBTQIA+ safe-space for asylum seekers facing daily homophobia or transphobia.

This 49-tracks album is our personal tribute to all the people threatened by governmental actions with the hunting of refugees, to all victims of police brutality & systemic racism. Spreading sonic love to all our brothers and sisters who face state violence and neoliberal laws that place economic growth of the few above the right to live with dignity for all human beings. The whole piece will be exclusively downloadable on Bandcamp for a low price, with all funds going to the BAAM to help them on militant and activism aspects.
