As Frankie Bones eloquently noted, “the five year run of Plus 8's sub-label Probe sometimes would seem to be putting out better releases than its parent label”. One of those indelible releases was ‘The Arrival’, signed by Casey Tucker under his Variable Frequency Technician moniker. “Cross Section”, the anthem that closed the B-Side of the original 1995 release, is getting now a re-release on Certain Music with two remixes from Fit Siegel and Marc Piñol plus a proper retake from Tucker himself.

It’s hard to tell what’s the most interesting feature of this singular track. Above all is a sharp and defining concoction of what listening to underground techno in the 90s was: warm and blissful chords over a metallic rhythm section, intrincate hi-hats, syrupy synths and a rubber-like bassline —you name it, the track covered it. Tucker’s 2021 remix keeps the vibe pretty much where it originally was, but now building things wider, tremendously three-dimensional and diaphanous. More than a remix, it’s a way to appreciate Tucker’s genuine evolution as an artist over the last three decades.

On the flip side, Fit Siegel signs an acidic and jazzy rendition full of twists and turns: keeping the groove in check while showing an infinite array of layers and melodic ingredients. Marc Piñol does pretty much the opposite while keeping the acid intention, building a ponderous bass-driven track with vocal delays, repetitive percussions and periodic glimpses of Tucker’s exquisite synths.

The B2 comes from label-debutant Peter LC, known for his productions on labels such as Small Great Things, Raw Soul or Discodelic Records, and is a musical homage to House music in all its facets. Let Me Tell You Something unites uplifting deep chords with a partly hypnotic-feel respectively a slightly (French)Filter-House note and classy spoken vocals to take listeners or dancefloor crowds on a trip through the genre by appealing to people's body, mind and soul. With Let Me Tell You Something Peter LC continues his streak of enchanting House Music penned the Berliner by choice and Italian by heart.

ZentaSkai undertook a period of research into the underlying structure and organisation of the human brain before writing ‘The Architecture Of The Mind’. The Berlin-based artist then took what had been learned and kept it in mind when writing the music that marks Mask's first album release. It comes with extensive background notes on each track, and an operational manual of sorts - notes from the artists as to the effects each piece will have on those who hear them. 

"The message conveyed by this album is that life itself is filled with music, but our egos often prevent us from being in harmony with this symphony. Inner chaos and silence can be challenging to bear, leading us to seek solace in external noise. We have constructed a barrier between our inner and outer worlds, causing us to lose touch with the rhythm of harmony. However, by embracing the illusion of separation and dancing to good music, we can rediscover harmony with ourselves and our environment. To fully experience the essence of the album, it should be played loudly on a proper sound system or high-quality headphones. The gorgeous 'Mind Mapping' opens up with deep and dubby drums and lush harmonies that soothe you to your core, '030' then has more raw, heavy drums with many layers of glowing synths, glassy melodies and organic found sounds. 'Fügung' keeps the deep and introspective moods coming before the crisp tech of 'Flow Dreaming' ups the ante with more drive and layers of vocal whispers, hi-hats and smeared dub chords. Elsewhere the likes of 'Quiet Reflection' lean into the groove with swirling pads and one-word vocal sounds drifting through the air over propulsive drum loops, and 'Boiling Range' suspends you in deft synth loops amongst the stars over a prickly house beat. 

The superb synth craft and well-designed grooves continue through the dusty deep house of 'Karl-Marx-Allee' and minimal dub of 'Dynamic System' before the elegant melodic techno of 'Apeiron' and dreamy synthscapes of 'Parallel 30' close the album in a reflective fashion. 

This is a deeply evocative album with a fully realised concept that is as thought-provoking as it is immersive.

PREMIERE: ZentaSkai - Boiling Range

Boulder, CO - On December 22, Craig Heneveld releases “μMod,” a snappy hypnotic techno track that builds its foundation on a punchy 909 kick and crisp hit hat. The song is led by a
sinister synth arpeggio that snakes around the song, leaving delays of digital dust and reverb in its wake. The track ebbs, flows, and sometimes stretches like it’s pulling apart at its seams

It’s this sonic elongation where the track gets its title, “μMod.” The real μMod is a knob on the Eurorack module Mimephon which provides a modern take on sound copying, echo, and
repeating devices, creating a unique delay effect that also takes on characteristics of vibratro, flanger, and chorus. This combination, when the timing is adjusted with this knob, creates this effect that sounds like light is being sucked into a black hole, where its particles bend into the singularity.

Craig’s musical growth and evolution are unconventional. He takes divergent influences from punk rock and Latin music, and even studied tabla and sarod under some of the world’s more
predominant Indian classical music gurus like famed practitioner Zakir Husain and students of the legendary Ali Akbar Khan.

This delicate art of Indian polyrhythms resonated deeply with Craig, leaving an indelible mark on his sound. These lessons significantly influenced his perception of rhythm and time, building a layer of complexity in his work even though the traditional Indian sounds weren't explicit in his compositions.
