“Raised Vibrations feat. Brint Story / Yadava Remix” is the new release from producer, DJ and broken beat revivalist WheelUP aka West London’s Danny Wheeler. Linking with Alabamian rapper Brint Story, “Raised Vibrations'' showcases a different sonic side to the producer, stripping bare the percussive backbone of the track, leaving Brint’s alt-R&B vocals to “take the wheel”. While Mancunian producer, NTS resident and So Flute co-founder Yadava catalyzes the tune onto the dancefloor with a jazzy primed remix. 

“Raised Vibrations was something completely different stylistically for me, a rapper on a track with no drums… Working with Brint Story is super fun, we met in the Deep South of the US, through my cousin and I love his positive vibe and his style of rapping… combining Bruk West London Sound with an American rapper just made sense, it was not a plan to be different just a vibe that came naturally from my heart” Danny explains.

Brint Story / Yadava Remix” is the latest instalment from WheelUP’s debut album ‘Good Love’ a record that featured the likes of Bembe Segue, Abacus (Pola & Bryson) and label-mate Tiawa. ‘Good Love’ was heavily praised for its resurgent broken beat sound by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), A-Trak (Fools Gold), Dave 1 (Chromeo), Benji B (BBC Radio 1), Bonobo, Ben UFO, Emma Jean-Thackray, Laurent Garnier and many more. “Take Me Higher feat. Tiawa”, the second single from ‘Good Love’, was playlisted on BBC 6Music.

As an artist, producer and DJ of dual Zimbabwean and British heritage, growing up in the epicentre of bruk that is West London around the likes of Goya Music, IG Culture and Kaidi Tatham, it was only natural that Danny would gravitate towards the ‘West London Sound’; as WheelUP puts it: “It’s in my musical DNA”. Originating from the drum and bass world as Danny Wheeler, WheelUP follows the footsteps and lineage of 4hero, evolving from jungle/D&B to broken beat/bruk and was recently knighted an “honorary Bugz” by the original dons of broken beat, Bugz in the Attic, due to WheelUP’s work in pushing the bruk sound to new audiences.

Over the summer WheelUP has taken his DJ set and live band – that includes singer-songwriter and afro-raver Toya Delazy, Nathan “Tugg” Curran aka Planet Battago on On The Corner and session drummer (Basement Jaxx, Gorgon City, Elton John), as well as bassist Tom Mason, part of the London jazz scene (Robert Mitchell’s Panacea, Richard Spaven) – notably to Shambala and We Out Here festival, as well as to the venues Hootananny, Lost Horizon, and Night Tales.

Scruscru and Mike Fot return for Vol.2 of their late night smokey jam sessions.

Opening the release is ‘k60k’, fusing skippy garage beats, squelchy acid licks, oscillating keys and cut up vocals. ‘Enjoint’ then retrains a similar aesthetic via a shuffled garage-tinged rhythm, amalgamation of chopped and pitched vocals snippets and bumpy bass groove alongside warbling chord sequences for a bouncy feel.

‘Hummus Dealer’ follows next on the flip and shifts focus to swinging breakbeats, bubbling synths and hazy brass samples throughout. ‘Bro’ccoli Lasagna’ then rounds out the release, dropping the tempo to deliver an ethereal slice of downtempo goodness featuring off-kilter drums, snaking resonant synths and airy textures.

Partyfine is the French label founded by electronic DJ and producer, Yuksek, back in 2013. It’s a fully independent operation where all levels of production are covered off in-house at the Reims based studio, from recording and mixing, to mastering and distribution, all executed under the one Partyfine roof.  With no musical boundaries, it’s output spans disco to electro, indie leaning all the way to the club.  Yuksek has simply extended his vast experience of writing music for a lot of great artists, to writing great music with these artists. Partyfine also throws down some very serious parties.

 

At the start of the new millenium Yuksek released some records that laid the fondation for a sound that combines both disco and pop influences with modern and darker electronic production chops, merging his love for the New York scene, a long line of classy  French electronic producers,  Anglo Saxon wares of the 70s, and more exotic flavours gleaned from his expansive travels. He has produced, remixed and collaborated with Gorillaz, Phoenix, UGOD, Lana Del Rey, JD Samson, Boston Bun, Breakbot, Brodinski, The Magician, and Alex Metric.  He has spent a chunk of time writing for film, television and stage, making his first original film score in 2014, Marguerite and Julien, a film by Valeěrie Donzelli at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. With releases on Razor-N-Tape, Classic, and Universal, colloborations with Polo&Pan, Fatnotronic, and Bertrand Burgalat, and as the Saturday night prime time resident on the airwaves of Radio Nova, Yuksek continues to circle the world with his in-demand DJ skills.

 

While working on his forthcoming album, he was exploring his hard drives and came across these tracks that had been forgotten. Once played loud as rough edits, Yuksek has tuned, tweaked, and finally finished the tracks ! The ‘Clean Drive EP’ is a collection of these forgotten gems, five sample based reworks in the Latin and Disco zone, that serve as some excellent DJ tackle. Here we are for the 4th round of @Apparel-Wax and a crazy one indeed for all the lovers of the vinyl masked man, a release that expresses 4 different nuances of House. Few words are needed to describe the debut of the vinyl with A1 track which is a rarely powerful combination of 2.0 Dance Music and 80’s vibes, a proper slap in the face to kick it off! Our unknown DJ then shifts to a more sensual mode with A2, where funky guitar shades and smooth chords blended with the vocals that drag us on a more intimate level of listening to keep on traveling on a lower tone. B side starts with a track guided by weaving Jazzy rhythmics dialoguing hectically with Samba and some jungle environmental recordings, creating a super personal interpretation of Brazilian Jazzy House, while to end up the 4th trip on Wax Planet, B2 blesses us with some more classic vibes with a sharp string’s melody and a rich bassline guided silently by a Rhodes piano and some pungent and melancholic female vocals, to end it up in style. Hot Russian label Minor Notes is back at it again with another VA release from some of the finest producers in their land. Sunner Soul caught our attention with his track 'Chewing Gum' with Scruscru last year. This time he's flying solo with glorious 'Shadows In The Garden'. After a fairytale introduction to the track is over he lays down a sumptuous groove fit for only the finest discotheque. We particularly like the wobbly synth sequence running over it all. On repeat.

Hugo Mari, formerly known as Books, has been receiving a lot of well-deserved love of late, and for good reason. Even though the London-based producer has been delivering respected dance-floor cuts and Edits on labels such as Omena, XVI and Sound Of Speed, his most recent release on Detroit Swindles’ Heist has really helped put him on the map. Having remixed Dele Sosimi and been remixed by Laurence Guy and Kai Alce, Hugo is moving in the right circles and it’s only a matter of time before he really gets the recognition he deserves.

His debut EP for Freerange is aptly titled Unalloyed Pleasure and consists of three originals that will give you and the dance floor just that. The lead track manages to meld slamming kicks, distorted bassline, deep,cinematic strings, disco hats and cut up spoken word into something fresh and unique.

Raise It Up sees Hugo go full on euphoric disco mode with an uplifting slice of sun-drenched soul just perfect for the summer months ahead. Lush Philly strings and vocal sample bring a classic vibe and catchy hook to the party.

Closing out this brilliant EP we have Just A Memory, a jazzier and more pensive slice of deep house music with upright bassline and familiar Rhodes sample taking centre-stage. Snippets of vocal float in and out of focus whilst the rolling, percussive groove brings an immersive energy that locks you in to it’s seductive mood.
