A somewhat ambitious collaboration that worked out.

Jon's notes: Joe gave me the concept for the lyric to the pilot's part at band practice two weeks ago, a French postal pilot in the 1920s crashes his plane in the desert and is rescued by some bedouins, who he must convince to take him home. The pilot is a bit of a jerk -- racist, assumes that the bedouins "can't" know what a plane is, and so forth.

I then handed the lyric off to Joe, who kept me in the dark on the music half until Friday 2/26. His tune was awesome and extremely far away from anything I would have come up with.

He also created the plane crash part in the meantime -- believe it or not, that's an instrument, his bass run through some effects pedals (that I built) and recorded making noise through the amp. I'll let him explain it further if he wants.

In the meantime, I had an idea to make an introduction song ... and I was determined to write it in Arabic. I did my best with what I could remember from 12 years ago (with some extra help from Google translate) and then asked our friend Mosno Al-Moseeki to improve the lyrics (particularly some parts that I knew were not idiomatic). Mosno gave me back not just an improved translation, but it had more rhymes and simply sounded so much better.

I then wrote a tune reminiscent of Tinariwen's music to go with it, and sang the demo, which I handed off to Joe and Mosno before we got together today. I dumped the lead vocal duties for "We Are Travelling" on Mosno because he was unlikely to mess up the pronunciation (I had made a couple mistakes, and he's a much better singer than me anyway).

The tracks were recorded live, including both lead vocals. Mosno used some traditional drums (and ended the evening with his legs asleep after playing for hours), I played some delay heavy leads, and Joe played acoustic. Then Joe and I switched so he could play the acoustic and he played the electric on the pilot's song.

There are some minor overdubs -- some extra percussion, some backing vocals (I sang along with Mosno, and Mosno did a buried falsetto harmony behind Joe's doubled lead vocal on "Aeropostale"). We also did some sound effects, like the wind and footsteps (created with one of Mosno's drums and pitch shifters and stereo tremolos).

I finished the master slicing the parts together at 11:49pm. It was a nailbiter.

All in all, this was easily one of the best days I've ever had making music, and I think my best recording experience ever. Shukhran ya Mosno, and thank you Joe for a wonderful end to FAWM!
