Seafields - [Dronarivm, 2021]

A new collection of work titled 'Sodium Light' from myself has just been released on Lee Norris's excellent NeoTantra label. The work was inspired by a series of night walks my daughter and I took towards the back end of 2019; pre all the states we find ourselves in at the moment. It's an impressionistic work of night-time cityscapes. Mastered by Fraser McGowan.

Following on from 2021s ‘Sodium Light’, ‘Brick and Air’ is another reflective and reactive collection of pieces that show an active engagement with the environments in which we live. In early 2021 Greig moved his family into a new home in a relatively unexplored area of town and was immediately struck by the aesthetics of the location both in sight and sound. The work that followed was all a reflection of this urban space that Greig and his family found themselves. Inspired by countless walks, a few outside recording sessions and sessions of photographing the new locale, Brick and Air was almost diaristic in its evolution. An ode to distant traffic noise and the hum of air-conditioning outlets behind shopping precincts.

Brick and Air - [Audiobulb, 2022]

In February of 2022, as Storm Eunice worked its way across the UK, two people, namely Greig Baird and his partner Susie Baird set out for a rare weekend away on the North Coast of Devon. The weather was rough, but life affirming. The North Devon coast spectacular and dramatic; made more so by the waning storm.

This collection is a set of sonified memories; moments in a particular location at a particular time. A creative recalling. A set of sound postcards if you will.

It's a reflection on the land of Dartmoor - somewhere that for me has always been special, weird, beautiful, but always a place that renews. I feel we need these open spaces now. Dear friends,

It has been a long time since we last released a compilation – our previous one was back in 2020. For the 100th release of our label, we felt it was the perfect occasion to celebrate in great company! We invited many musicians who have collaborated with Dronarivm in the past to create joint tracks with an artist of their choice. The result is 23 uniquely diverse tracks that showcase the vast musical spectrum of the genre we generally call "Ambient."

We are proud to present Illuminations III, a compilation created as a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has supported us over the years. This includes musicians, listeners, visual artists, photographers, designers, podcasters, reviewers, and everyone who has helped us grow and move forward.

Illuminations III features over two hours of outstanding music from leading ambient producers, and just like any true gift, it's completely free to download. Of course, if you wish, you can contribute any amount you find appropriate. All proceeds will go toward supporting and further developing our projects.

For those who prefer a physical format, the album is also available as a print-on-demand double CDr.

Various Artists – Healing Sound Propagandist: Retrospective [2019-2024]

Since its foundation, Indianapolis-based Healing Sound Propagandist has quietly built a catalog of nearly a hundred releases by a cadre of emerging and established artists, specializing in undiluted doses of textured drone and experimental ambient. To commemorate this prolific run, Retrospective [2019-2024] collects 76 standout tracks over five hours, from the warm tonal blankets of James Bernard (“Never Alone”), to the wispy, boreal loops of UK’s Pallette (“Für What”) and the womb-like warble of Sean Evans (“Repetition”), along with scores of other beautifully rendered works covering a broad range of atmospheres and instrumentations.

As an arm of the renowned Past Inside The Present imprint, HSP maintains a kinship with its creators and followers that only an artist-run house can provide. Label head Zach Frizzell (aka zakè) found himself in need of a dedicated home for deep cuts and longer form works by his vastly talented roster – one where the focus is squarely on the music and energy, rather than narratives, conceits, or other diversions. Across the label’s discography there is a consistency of quality, from ascendant and seasoned artists alike, that has kept supporters eagerly engaged since the very start. A deliberate choice to release exclusively on digital and cassette formats further places the focus on uninterrupted, deep listening.

Throughout Retrospective, there is a gentle and effective pacing that more than justifies its overall span, while venerating the sheer variety of approaches to curative music. UK-based Moss Covered Technology provides the overture, “Glare”, placing soft, flittering synths over gathering swells of sweetened drone, while Chicago’s wøunds delivers a frigid hum underscored by subtle, strummed guitar on “December191920”. Elsewhere, the duo of Blanket Swimming + Gallery Six evokes a sunlit garden in the sustained blush of “With Endless Eyes”, and Amsterdam’s andarctica unfurls the album-length “Pur”, a hypnotic vessel of stunning depth and dimension.

While the term “propagandist” might evoke some staunch political ideology or breed of thought control, its use by HSP is an ironic foil to the earnestness of the music, which is intended to be fully open to interpretation and suitable for all forms of engagement. According to Frizzell, “Our conviction is that healing sounds and meditative music contain transformative powers — this is an ethos we pursue with unwavering passion, putting all our cards on the table and letting the work speak for itself.”

In a culture beset by gimmicks and ghosts in the machines, simplicity and authenticity are in vanishingly short supply; a reliable sanctuary is a real gift, and for six years the curators at Healing Sound Propagandist have kept that notion at the forefront. Across its many topographies and tonalities, Retrospective is a (relatively) concise distillation for the familiar fan, and only a tantalizing toe in the water for the uninitiated, offered in the hope that it might open new entryways to profound listening experiences.

In the Summer of 2019 Greig Baird and his family moved home and into a new area of a city they have lived for many years.

The layers and layers of history in this new locale were palpable and inspired Baird to create this small collection of music, ‘Once Hallowed’.

This new area was home to a Franciscan Friary established in the 13th century and later home to a church, Allhallows-on-the-Wall built in the 19th century. This church was later a corset factory, then later a parachute factory during war time. The last burials in this place were conducted in secrecy by the light of a midnight moon during the cholera epidemic of 1832. The wall outside Baird’s home dates to Roman times and was once the south-western city limit.

The burial grounds now deconsecrated and long abandoned are also home to the catacombs of the city. Again abandoned long ago, bodies long removed, tales of stolen skulls and grave robbing, and the stone of which they are built are all that remains. The areas wildlife, dog walkers, children playing, students hanging around, drunks falling asleep on abandoned tombs and the city’s drug dealers plying trade all make the place what it is. Often beautiful as the light changes and Falcons fly above, the sounds of the day city form into the nocturnal; sometimes sad as the desperation of people’s modern situations becomes abundantly clear.

The relics of the past experienced in our present creates something else. Something deeply inspiring, creating an atmosphere deeply felt and not entirely understood.

Todo comenzó con una reflexión que sobrevolaba por nuestro muelle, la sensación de que estamos viviendo tiempos áridos y agrios, donde el grito sin sentido se alza sobre las voces y el ambiente es de una aspereza que asfixia. 
A la conclusión que llegábamos era la urgencia de calidez humana, de sentir el abrazo y la cercanía del otro, sean allegados o no, amigos o desconocidos. 
De esta máxima surge “Slow sketch vol. 1: Reflections of the ambient community”, nuestro granito de arena para que los tiempos fríos acaben transformados en esa calidez humana y así, añadir una banda sonora quieta a esos momentos donde la humanidad acaba siendo nuestro traje de diario. 
“Slow sketch vol. 1: Reflections of the ambient community” presenta el trabajo de cuarenta artistas y proyectos que comparten nuestra reflexión sobre el mundo que nos rodea y recogen el testigo de nuestra propuesta para ofrecernos su calidez y sensibilidad a través de las máquinas.
