For the 7th installment of our mix series we have the pleasure to welcome the always smiling Benedek(@benedek_music) with his contribution named Zebrano Baby: Wilton's The Divide. Q&A (excerpt) here below.

MFM: Hi Nicky, how've you been lately?

NB: I’ve been great, enjoying the summer here in L.A.. Just working hard on music, had a few U.S. DJ gigs, some session work and a live show in L.A. that took up a lot of my time.

MFM: For readers that aren't familiar with Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show perhaps you could tell a bit about what you do and where you do it?

NB: Hahaha. I used to do quite a bit of session work and engineering. I’m good at setting up old gear and trouble shooting so I initially was getting hit up to wire up old synths and drum machines. I haven’t been doing that as much over the past few years, I’m mainly living off of my own music and DJing, which makes me happy. Now I just do gigs like that occasionally as they come up.

MFM: You seem like a musician who likes to try out new stuff and explore new sounds and directions. Do you consider that a plus or does it sometimes make things more complex too maybe?

NB: Definitely. I’m pretty honed in on what I like but at the same time there is definitely a breadth to my taste and what i want to achieve sonically. I often have to juggle multiple projects in different vibes going at once. It can take me looong time to finish tracks. More dance oriented stuff I can definitely knock out faster. I’m trying to get better at finishing things quickly and moving on to the next. I just kind of make what i want to make. It can be diverse but i think it all fits together in some way too via my harmonic, rhythmic and melodic sensibilities and the gear i use.

MFM: Could you visually talk us through your studio? 

NB: It’s on the fourth floor of an office building in Koreatown, Los Angeles. I’ve got a bunch of synths, samplers, drum machines and rack fx. Lately I use my SY99 and Prophet 600 all the time, Eventide H3500 and DSP4000, Yamaha SPX90, plus a lot of cheap Kawai gear. Vibe wise the studio is dark and cozy with two windows overlooking a busy intersection. I share the space with my good friend Alex Talan (Coolwater) who helped mix my Earlyman Dance record.

MFM: How would you describe the L.A. music scene, is it a nice place (for you) to be right now? Did it change compared to when you started?

NB: I think it’s pretty good here right now, lots of people are really into the music. What I love about the scene here is that it can kind of be whatever you make of it. There is a lot going on, every weekend there are multiple shows or parties put on by local crews. There are plenty of spaces to put stuff on, mostly all underground. It’s also easy to be in your own world and just work on music and enjoy the lifestyle here. It’s always been a place people move to fulfill their entertainment or artistic dreams, in the music or film industries or other fields, and I would say that applies now more than ever.

MFM: Thanks for your contribution to the mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

NB: I’m kind of putting this together as I go, but i guess its kind of an imaginary soundtrack for driving around LA in my Benz 190e, some kind of crime drama with some lighthearted comedic elements. I bought a lot of records while i was traveling this year but also reinvigorated my love for digging locally in LA, so it’ll be a mix of all of that.

MFM: What's up next, any exciting releases or things coming up?

NB: Up next is a 12” on L.I.E.S. with my buddy Delroy. We’ve been making tracks together for almost 10 years but this will be our second release, and first one under this moniker “Trackstars”. Earlier this summer I just put out a record with Tom Noble on his label Superior Elevation. Check it!
