David is a die-hard record collector who has been playing around the North of Spain and across Europe for over fifteen years, particularly in Barcelona where he’s played in most of the main clubs. He normally builds his sets with a selection of hypnotic, tribal and deep music.

For over three years he’s been focused on Escala de Grisos, his monthly local radio show, where he intersperses ambient, techno and anything in between with conversation and interviews around the music.

Currently a researcher of avant-garde music and the intersection between art and technology, Nono has extensive experience in the design, production and development of cultural activities. She is also Director of Delicalisten, a platform from which she curates music and visual arts events, and curator of the Soundset Festival (Conde Duque). She has programmed the DNIT Cycle at CaixaForum Barcelona since 2012, and has worked for a number of major festivals including L.E.V., Primavera Sound and Mutek.

A vinyl collector since childhood, Nono creates sets that transport the listener to experience deep sensations emerging from the calm.

Timnah Sommerfeld’s signature approach to earthy dance music has been tried, tested and approved by swinging hips all over Europe. Developing her style from age 17 onwards, when she started playing in squats and industrial spaces around Basel, she’s continuously making her mark with warm, reverberating techno cuts from across the spectrum. During her residencies at Hinterhof Bar and nowadays, Elysia, Sommerfeldt’s sets fluently cover (and transcend) shades of electro, techno and house music, establishing her as a firm favorite amongst dancers and peers. Smooth mixing skills, strong emotional narratives and an intuitive understanding of dancefloor dynamics continue to define her style, seamlessly cruising through the small hours of the night.

Albert Salinas and Philip Sherburne founded the Balmat label in 2021 after three years as co-hosts of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3. Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put all-encompassing sounds out into the world. But where Lapsus Radio focuses on a wide range of electronic sounds, encompassing everything from IDM to techno to footwork, the duo’s sets together typically skirt the edges of the dancefoor, if not steering clear of it altogether.

True to the experimental spirit of Mediterranean and Balearic electronic traditions, Balmat DJs are interested in creating enveloping environments that incorporate ambient music, atmospheric soundscaping, and low-BPM rhythms—music with a cloudy outline yet a distinct sensibility.

“Balmat” means “empty” or “void” in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, they prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.

Vicki Siolos is an ambient, experimental DJ and interaction designer from New York City. Her career focuses around creating seamless experiences for broad audiences, using trusted methods and casting personal bias aside. Her mixes are intended as the complete opposite, heard each month on her radio show Bright Patterns: a freeform exploration of internal absolutes among endless options. Each recording is an attempt to capture life in the moment, inviting everything to the surface as it wants to be heard. She’s also contributed several mixes for Mysteries of the Deep, and her release Kintsugi on enmossed is dedicated to the Japanese art that echoes the resilience within each of us.

Originally from Galicia, Alicia Carrera is a visual artist, founder of the @liopress platform and co-founder of the @magacircemusica label with @donato-dozzy.

Constantly exploring new sounds, her sets always depart from the commonplace to recreate movement and evoke a sense of travel. Because when it comes to self-emancipation, the first thing to do is to allow yourself to be transported through your senses.

The collaboration between us and the Mostra festival gets a new chapter, and this one is quite special - the recording of the festival's closing set by incredibly talented Japanese artist Lynne. Throughout the festival, Mostra showcased carefully selected talent, emphasizing quality above all else. Lynne's DJ set at Mostra was a testament to her unparalleled talent and expertise. With a keen understanding of the festival's needs and the audience's energy, Lynne took us on a unique journey that left us in awe. And it wasn't an easy task for Lynne. She had to follow the exceptional 4-hour set by Patrick Russell, but she pushed the bar even higher, leaving a lasting impression that we still talk about three months later. 

As the fatigue of the four-day music marathon loomed over the crowd, she fearlessly embraced the challenge of delivering an unforgettable closing performance. Lynne's selection of powerful half-time drum&bass ignited a fiery energy within Castell Du Monjuic, transforming the atmosphere into a seething cauldron of sound. 

The recording of this set captures every electrifying moment, delivering an experience that rivals the memories we hold in our minds. Prepare to be swept away as Lynne showcases drum'n'bass 2.0, infusing it with her unique and awe-inspiring artistry.

Nico grew up in a small coastal town in Galicia in the late 80s. In 2008, he started to involve himself with deeper shades of electronic music and their profound sentimental atmospheres. His interest became an obsession, and within two years he began to play in clubs across the Spanish northwest. 

According to the artist, he was influenced by a golden generation of local DJs who helped define and shape his sound in terms of dance music, along with a rounded love of legendary bands and artists from across the musical spectrum. His musical philosophy is that everyone has something to bring, so there is always something to learn. 

In 2015, Nico moved to Barcelona, expanding his horizons both artistically and personally. He’s currently  one of the residents of the renowned Nitsa Club, and together with the duo Binomi, is responsible for HIRU, a multi-venue party across the city designed as an ode to club culture.

Nico prefers not to pigeonhole himself into any particular style, but his sets are nothing short of hypnotic. When he plays, he looks for that peculiar sensory union with the dance floor that connects them without words, seeking to lead the night in the same direction together.

Sciama's DJ set kicked off the third day of performances curated at Castell de Montjuïc for Mostra 23 (@mostrabcn). The second edition of the Catalan festival brought together a total of 1,000 people across two different locations and featured four days of musical acts. The lineup included 31 artists who delivered high-quality avant-garde and experimental electronic sounds.

HOCast #159 - Sciama - Mostra 2023

Coming from Japan and living in Barcelona the last five years, Kazumi Sakoda is a curious artist who investigates the differences she finds with the soundscapes of her native Tokyo through the sounds she picks up on the streets of Barcelona.

All this material, she transforms it into cassettes that she makes by hand and through a fine use of looping and sampling techniques she recontextualizes into beautiful soundscapes that travel between ambient and experimental music.

She said in El Prat Radio 91.6 FM: "After the pandemic, everything has changed and people are more sensitive than beforehand. The feelings are stronger than before because we know what is the most important thing in life, what to feel. That is why on the same street there is a quite different experience from before the pandemic.”

Laima Adelaide is a composer and electronic music producer. Her music is inspired by nature and its elements like water and air. Also, there is influence from avant-garde music, as she has studied classical composition in Stuttgart.

Noisy textures, deep hypnotic beats and airy harmony you can find in her music and live performances. She has released on Oslated, Phonotropsimi, Annulled Music and others.

She has her own label Predawn Records focusing on deep and ambient techno.

Hanyo van Oosterom started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus Derwort, a musician friend with Hanyo was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock “The Kallikatsou” on the island of Patmos, Greece.

Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc.

After several years of collaborations with musicians like Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila, they decided to start together the beautiful The Chi Factory with which released (with the help of Ario Farahani and his label Astral Industries) some of the most beautiful records in the history of ambient music

Following the passing of group member J. Derwort in 2019, Hanyo van Oosterom’s legacy work brings about the next evolution of the Chi project: Son of Chi.

The sound of Hanyo Oosterom unfurls lushly overgrown 4th world drones, voices, and field recordings, naturally drifting between time-slowing beats, FM radio interference, and languid instrumentation combining the western retro-futuristic point of view, the New Age, and the ancestral eastern tradition.

In 2007 Hanyo invited the legendary Jon Hassell for two magical nights of “instant composing sessions” with the Numoonlab Orchestra in LantarenVenster in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with other special guests like Tony Allen (Fela Kuti), Ursula Rucker, Kain the Poet (Last Poets), Dwight Trible (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Omar Ka, Anthony Joseph, Colonel Red, Joe Bowie (Defunkt) and many more. The recordings are still online.

Arthur Flink was part of this Numoonlab Orchestra. Arthur is a trumpeter and electronic jazz producer from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Previously active in bands like Monsieur Dubois, State of Monc, and their collaboration project Monsieur Dodo, he now releases work through the FLiNK project.

In late 2022 Hanyo van Oosterom (Son of Chi) and Arthur Flink released ‘The Fifth World Recordings’. A tribute to the late Jon Hassell, who passed away in 2021, the album connects a deep running thread that captures perfectly the mysterious and magical world of the American trumpet player and composer.

Enigmatic producer and DJ Aa Sudd (Vector Trancer) explores the more hypnotic and alluring realms of sound. Based in Germany, he delves into irregular rhythms, immersive atmospheres and kaleidoscopic patterns, transmitting his sound via labels such as Midgar or Mirror Zone. With a focus on the captivating and the otherworldly, Aa Sudd delivers enveloping sets and productions, fusing elements of techno and experimental drum and bass to create a psychedelic listening experience.

Aa Sudd collaborated with artist Konduku to form the project “Konsudd” releasing their first EP on the closely connected swiss label Amenthia Recordings (Garçon, Timnah, Agonis) in late 2022.

@puntalaberinto performed on the second day of #Mostra23 at Hangar.

Puntalaberinto (Patricia Usero) has been immersed in the sonic universe of modular synthesizers and the construction of DIY instruments for more than a decade.

Her live performances go deep, striving to transform the sonic experience into a physical and meditative encounter for her audience.

The modular synthesizer is her main instrument through which field recordings are filtered and mutated, creating hypnotic soundscapes, drone floods, organic textures, powerful subs and evocative dub rhythms.

A weird rift in nature... that deviates from conventional narratives.

hems (@hems) crafts sonic experiences that blend experimental elements from electronica and musique concrète, evoking a sense of mystery as familiar forms transform into the unknown. Over the past few years, Hems has been a featured DJ at numerous events spanning Europe, Asia, and Latin America. His DJ sets have graced prestigious stages, including multiple appearances at Astral Industries, Kizen Records and Vurt events. As a live artist, Hems showcased his talents in a noteworthy project called "The Listening Body", this innovative show brought live drones to life using gongs, singing bowls, synthesizers, and an impressive array of 20 speakers. Additionally, Hems has ventured as a solo artist, employing the immersive 20-speaker system by AMOENUS to create mesmerizing ambisonic performances. Last but not least in 2023 together with Pagan Red, Hems started a new label "Titrate" (@titraterecords) focused on drone and experimental music.

Mostra (@mostrabcn) is an independent small-format festival of avant-garde and experimental electronic music that was born as an alternative to the macro-festivals and mass, commercial events that are held in the city of Barcelona. Mostra 2024 will take place from 28 to 31 March in Barcelona, featuring a total of 32 artists across two distinctive venues of the city.

"This mix is a crystalization of many of the experiences that I had in 2023 experiences DJing, dancing, listening, and living. 
I also kept in mind my upcoming performance at Acquario in January when making the mix. 

2023 is coming to an end and 2024 is just beginning, giving me the feeling that each year like a circle that comes around and around again. However, even though we may find ourselves back where we started, there are always many journeys and experiences in between these points - this idea is also something I have tried to incorporate in this mix. See you again on the next trip around the sun."

In 2010 he starts Black Label, a monthly party at Miniclub, where for 5 years he made known his more House side. After this, it is worth mentioning his residence in Jerusalem Club, Caravaca (Proper Club) and the organization and residence of the Taiga parties in Madrid, where he bet on contemporary techno.

At the moment he is still interested in the most current musical currents of electronic music, from ambient to techno, through electro, halftime and D&B. Always betting on vinyl as a format and deep productions that keep the dub as a common denominator.

"This is my first published solo live-set with all recent creations.

I wanted to showcase a sound I am harnessing at the moment, utilising mainly a modular system, with a large amount of the FX processing from the Eventide H7600 & Sherman Filterbank. 

I see this piece of work more as a "Audiobiography", rather than purely a Live-set as it presents a broad spread of textures and tonality that I find myself drawn to at present. 

The emotional and hypnotic aspects stand always first, to touch the heart and mind is the goal."

For this May new episode, we are super happy to host @astralindustries label head and textures master Ario. London-born & raised DJ, he has been blessing venues worldwide with his spirit and beautiful sessions - which are always a trip! Ario will be our guest at our On Board 10 x Non Series event for Sonar Off in Barcelona at Laut on June 15. 
For this new recording in the series, Ario offered us his set at Mostra Festival last April. A pure bliss that we deeply love! We wish you a good listening session and we see you very soon in Barcelona for a new journey. Thx again Ario!

Class 1990, @viels was born in a little city outside Milan (Italy). Early in his adolescence he discovered techno culture inspired by a book called “TECHNO“ by Christian Zingales. Having released his first Ep on Initial Berlin in 2015, Viels continued his musical path appearing with a track on the well respected dutch imprint Dynamic Reflection, followed by his debut ep “Distrophism” and contributing for the 10 years anniversary of the label, among some of the most recognised artists in the scene: Donato Dozzy, Mike Parker, Shifted, Oscar Mulero, Blawan, Ness, Jeroen Search and many more.

Co-owner with Francesco della Sala of “End Of Perception”, Viels just released also on label such Warm Up, Non Series, Mord, and Semantica Records.
At the moment he is resident of the Acquario party in Milano and an active part of the organization of it.

With an increasing interest and having performed in quality clubs like Tresor, Perron, Cassette, Schron and shared the booth with the likes of Oscar Mulero, Svreca and Dasha Rush to name a few, Viels is establishing himself as part of a new wave of djs and producers approaching the contemporary techno scene.

The time has come to reflect on some of the standout performances from this year’s remarkable Mostra Festival. There were some program adjustments, and new stages were added compared to last year. We had more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors around and inside the Castell De Montjuï. Thursday at the Hangar provided a perfect opening, a special day for all of us who cherish ambient, experimental, and obscure music. The Pati stage at the Castell De Montjuïc was a brilliant addition and hit the mark perfectly.

But let's start from the end with the festival's closing set, the grand finale. The Mostra crew meticulously planned the lineup, giving the honor of closing this magical extended weekend to one of their residents - Timnah. Given the high caliber of talent at Mostra, ending the festival on a high note was no simple task. Yet, what we witnessed (and what you will hear in this recording) was a masterful set from a DJ who truly knows her craft.

Following an impressive performance by Rrose, Timnah took the stage with a flawlessly curated techno set. 

In this musical laboratory, Timnah was an alchemist, deftly mixing familiar elements with a slightly more energetic twist than usual. For the first 30 minutes, she kept the base simmering at a low “fire,” allowing the atmosphere to build gradually before adding multiple layers of hypnotic, high-energy elements that electrified the dancefloor. 
The result was an exhilarating and dynamic performance, making it one of the most memorable highlights of this year’s Mostra Festival.

Mostra is a project that comes straight from the heart. An independent, small-format festival of avant-garde and experimental electronic music which emerges as a counterpoint to the macro-festivals and the overcrowded, commercial and rather impersonal offerings of other large events held in Barcelona.

Mostra's third edition took place between the 28th and 31st March. Aina Climent's two hours set opened the festival on the first day of performances at Hangar, a day dedicated to the more horizontal musical proposals and cutting-edge sounds within the four days festival celebrated.

Human Lessons #085 - Aina Climent @ Mostra 2024 [Human Lessons × Mostra]

In just three editions, Mostra Festival has achieved what many events aspire to but rarely reach – consistently bringing out the best in the artists who perform. Part of this success is due to perfectly matching the music to the specific time slots and settings. Following Sybil's meticulously timed and skillfully executed mix, the responsibility of closing the "day portion" at the Foso stage was assigned to one of Amsterdam's finest exports, Konduku. 

While many anticipated his signature polyrhythmic brain dance style, a great DJ knows how to read the moment and adapt accordingly. Konduku delivered a quirky, minimal techno set that had us bopping against Castell's walls the entire time. The set never lost its momentum, with unexpected synth stabs and a flurry of mid-high percussion adding a delightfully offbeat twist to the steady four-on-the-floor rhythm. 
It was a gloriously weird sunset, and that's a good thing.

Forest Drive West is the alias of producer Joe Baker from Plaistow, East London. His music has created a stir across the UK underground and beyond, with stripped-down, atmospheric and hypnotic techno tracks contrasting with his heavier, jungle-influenced sounds – all with a connecting thread that explores intricate rhythms and inventive percussion.

Since 2016, Forest Drive West has been building a rapidly growing catalogue of releases, receiving critical acclaim for records on labels such as Livity Sound, Ilian Tape and Rupture London. His ‘Jungle Crack' and ‘Set free’ EPs show a stunning command of sound design and complex rhythms, and they remain some of Rupture London's most sought-after releases.

Patrick Russell is a true veteran of the US underground, perhaps one of the last unsung heroes of a now lost era in the Midwest. A genuine sonic storyteller, he magically transforms the diaspora of acid, pure jack energy, and hints of IDM into a deep, fluent sonic dialog that never fails to devastate both minds and dance floor.

A Detroit-bred DJ, artist, and producer active since the early 90's, Patrick has now made New York City his home. Perhaps best known as a key figure in the legendary No Way Back parties, his ability to weave intensely unique, long-format narratives has earned him critical acclaim and repeat performances at Japan’s Labyrinth festival, Berghain, Unsound, and DEMF/Movement. Patrick has also been steadily building a strong catalog of high-profile productions to compliment his increasingly varied, hypnotic, and in-demand DJ sets; his recent 3-track remix EP on The Bunker New York also marks his induction as an official resident DJ at the long-running Brooklyn party.

His consummate taste and disciplined execution have created a respect that cannot be purchased. Patrick Russell is not just a name to watch, he is someone to be experienced.
