Premiere: Kölsch 'Cassiopeia'

With his "Control EP" Shifted’s newest production brings no further clues as to the identity of this highly regarded yet anonymous producer. Having established a relationship with Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver imprint, Shifted has been releasing some of the freshest and highly acclaimed techno tracks at the moment. What ‚Control‘ does bring, however, is an impressive follow-up release to the "Drained EP" released on Mote-Evolver earlier this year.

Composed of four minimalist yet thumping tracks, Shifted’s Control release evokes an attitude towards techno that is raw and deep while also engaging. Beginning with “Control”, the EP starts out energetically with a tribal rhythm that mixes in with spaced-out effects and plenty of grooving underlying bass. “Structure”, takes a bass-heavy turn that carries with it an intense and ominous feel throughout. It moves forward rapidly with pulsing basslines that carry a distinct and focused intensity.

The B-side, starting with “Drifting Over” balances a deep mysterious driving attitude with a whole range of low sonic frequencies fine-tuned specifically for their resonance on any dance floor’s sound system. “Resurface” pounds hard and mixes in atmospheric tones as it constantly builds momentum while reaching its climax.

Delivering us the nineteenth edtion of Balans Records is Benny Rodrigues aka ROD, a well-versed and talented producer who has had a strong relationship with the Dutch label and its owner after releasing its fourth release back in 2011.

Opening the EP is ‘3yr’, a mellow track that steadily climbs into a euphoric blend of dub-inspired chords and refined symbols to form an elegant composition. Taking an unexpected turn, ‘Float’ is reminiscent of a nostalgic voyage Eastbound into the unknown as a traditional flute whistles a techno lullaby.

On the flipside, ‘Kloduba’s composition cleverly corresponds with ‘3yr’ as its gentle patterns gradually develop to harmonize together. To close out the EP ‘Lego’ engages the listener as the sounds of watery blips enthusiastically scatter throughout. This four-tracker finds itself a perfect home in the Balans collection, filled with masterly Dutch artists taking a stab at timeless techno tracks.

BIO:
LoKKoTRONN, born and raised in Spain but living in New York City since the 2000s, he is the co-founder and resident DJ of the acclaimed Erratic emblem, established in 2011. 
Since its inception, Nico has been constantly refining and expanding his techno palette rendering the genre inextricable from his way of life and sensibility towards the arts and electronic music as a whole. His style when behind the decks can be characterized as a blend between melodic, acid basslines layered with poignant, driving rhythms that penetrate equally the mind as they do the body. 
His solo techno journeys under LoKKoTRONN have been featured on podcast series such as Monument as well as his co-run Erratic Podcast to name a few –the latter now being over 5 years old and spanning over 130 episodes. 
He is also involved in and part of the dynamic Dos Lokos duo, composed of himself and Erratic's second half Jason T., where outputs of their unique and powerful mixing have come to life on Strobe's and Input Selector's podcast series. Always in search of new sonic textures and enchanting melodies, LoKKoTRONN's mixing and penchant towards the cerebral are rare and timeless.

Cubismo itself is a reflection of the artist’s penchant for fragmenting and reassembling diverse sonic forms, borrowing its ideology and production technique from the artistic movement after which it is named. Cubismo 8.1 and 8.3 are raw, hypnotic, and dance floor-driven. Cubismo 8.3, possibly the most visceral piece on the four track EP, gradually builds tension throughout, overlaying undulating synth lines with distorted surface noise and pitch-shifted phrases. The series of Lost in Buenos Aires tracks, however, are ambient and, at times, incredibly cinematic, utilizing heavily-layered feedback and shivering harmonies. The overall effect is one of abstraction, cohesion, and balance.

Exploring the outer fringes of the 4/4 realm, 'Differences' delves into unexpected sound territories without losing touch with ground zero. Sub-heavy drums mix with cinematic pads and raw breaks on 'LDB', the genre-bending opener, while 'Trim FX' takes it back to the dancefloor with a highly energetic yet fluid, progressive cut. 'Slow Fade' explores a more melancholic side of techno, with its stripped back atmosphere and echoing dubs. El Choop gives the track a distinguishing treatment, amping up the atmospherics into a resonant, raw number.
