The pair behind Broken Homes are Thoma Bulwer and his muse, Pops. They have written this album together over the past couple of years through summers of love being inspired at festivals like Houghton and Freerotation; and dark winters at spots like FOLD, the Cause, the infamous Lion and Lamb, fabric and lots of natwy underground warehouses and boats around Hackney Wick.

The eight track album has all been given a 90s and retro flavour at Thoma’s TB analogue mastering studio and the pair expressed this in the recordings as a journey-of-genres. From garage, UKG, house, electro, jungle, minimal, bleeps, rave and breaks the tracks inspiration and electronic music culture is soaked up and slapped back out through the tape machine. Any true London raver would find it hard not to shake-a-leg to this!

The Swedish producer is known for his sensational nineties influenced style of house and electronic beats. The four track EP features lo-fi productions in various styles with cascading vocal samples and emotional elements throughout.

Prayer For Peace is the latest LP from Melbroune-hailing nu-jazz maestro Ziggy Zeitgeist and his band, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. This is Ziggy’s first full-length project with his current lineup based in Berlin since having moved there in the summer of 2019, and the first to be released on newly-founded label, Get Together Collective. Recorded over a 3-day period in the revered Jazzanova studios in Berlin, and with engineering and mixing handled by master producer Axel Reinemer, this album serves up an ecstatic 8-track showcase of the band’s freewheeling, live-jam oriented approach to jazz-fusion-inspired groove-making.  

	Clocking in at track six on the album, “Tightrope” balances many of the various elements that make Ziggy and co.’s music so electrifying. The opening half of the track, which features a mix of steady percussion, warbly bass, funky keys, congas and bongos, feels in line with much of the tradition of jazz-fusion pioneers of the past. But what easily could have become mere pastiche soon escalates into something entirely unique and entrancing. The beat steadily grows more erratic and unfettered once it passes the halfway point, with the tempo and build-up hinting at a techno-like drop. The band never quite lets the track devolve into a state of pure sonic catharsis, however, as they wrangle it back into the jazz-fusion rhythm they so expertly established in the opening half, while still allowing it to develop and evolve in organic ways until petering out at the end.

Ziggy and his cohort liberally take elements from various genres and styles to pay homage to them, while effortlessly staging jaw-dropping feats of experimentation and improvisation. A tough balancing act, indeed, but one that they pull off with panache.

All profits from this release are going to Mind / Trees fro cities / Womens aid charity. We are aiming to raise a modest 3K to give 1K to each charity but the sky is the Limit.

Duncan's 49North rolls back into town with another 4 track smorgasbord.

Kicking things off is EP lead - 'Slow Burn 2049' - a track that rides aloft a raw breakbeat drum pattern - whilst plush, ambient synths billow out gorgeous, windswept melodies. Then we have D's very own re-rub of '49North EP3''s 'Omnite' - a beastly slab of purposeful Techno, that appears to pay homage ever so subtly to a certain, much-loved 80's classic in the process.

Cooper Saver then steps up to the 'Slow Burn 2049' remix plate - delivering an entrancing piece of slo-mo, percussion-laden magic; before the mighty Locked Groove takes us over the finish line - twisting Duncan's 'In The Mansion Of The Gods' into a dark, dub-washed Techno titan.

Hippychick

Released in 1997, this collaboration between Snitzer & Mc Coy and Humate captures the intensity of European techno at the time. The Heavy Mix rhythm presses forward with a force. Synth lines swell in arcs that hover above the drums.

The combination of producers brought together different strengths. The drive and weight of Snitzer & Mc Coy with the melodic sensibility Humate had honed across records like Love Stimulation. The result is a piece that can fill a floor while keeping an edge of mystery intact.
A defining release for Superstition and a track that has carried its power into new generations of listeners, it holds its place as part of our Classic of the week selection.

Deep beneath the murky ocean they moved amidst the water, the rolling waves passed by overhead undisturbed by their great might. These were submarine mammals, mystical creatures which scoured the ocean floor in search of treasures and pleasures unknown. Very few people had been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these magnificent beasts but those who had would know that the extent of nature's golden powers were limitless and boundless. 

Baby Rollén is set to release a new EP on his own newly founded label Slump Recordings. This one has been hotly tipped and gone down a treat over at Ransom Note headquarters. Deep moving electro with harsh tones and punchy stabs.
