Studiodue Future - Mixed by I-Robots

Italian artists I-Robots and Lorenzo LSP have put together two new mixes inspired by the legendary Turin club Studiodue, at which they were residents back in the 80s. The mixes feature an array of timeless deeptechno and eclectic electronic sounds from I-Robots' Opilec Music label, as well as one of his new and exclusive remixes.  Gianluca Pandullo, aka I-Robots, was a resident at the club - formerly a vintage cinema - from the late 80s until 1993 when it closed forever. At that time, Lorenzo LSP was also a DJ and one of the key party promoters. The club first opened in 1979 and soon became internationally renowned for its club nights, live concerts and events. It had a proudly eclectic sound that took in everything from disco, new wave, rare groove, acid, new beat and house to rock, hip hop, acid jazz, reggae, ska and dub.

The club was a foundational space for many in the city, championing black music and providing a safe space for people from the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, Studiodue became home to many vital promotions such as Lorenzo LSP (Latin Superb Posse)’s PopPlanet, House Train, Double Face and the I-Robots’ Sound Of Blackness Thursday. Over the years, many international stars visited, such as Ice-T, Todd Terry, Paul Weller, Frankie Knuckles,DJ Cash Money, Norman Jay, Pete Heller & Terry Farley, David Morales, Desmond Dekker and many more.

Studiodue helped shape several artists, including Lorenzo LSP and I-Robots, which is why the latter conceived this project and his Opilec Music label to mix up past and present influences and take them into the “Future”. 

The mix from I-Robots starts with an exclusive track that features an Italian vocal version of Kraftwerk’s ‘The Robots’ remade by Straker Commander and featuring Johnson Righeira. It’s a retro-future gem with glistening melodies and rugged arps and opens the release in authentic style. From there, the ensuing two hours take in raw analogue house, deep and soulful techno rollers, sleek minimal tracks, and percussive grooves packed with a Latin flair as well as so much more. It is a mix that very much joins the dots between then and now with music from Rhythim is Rhythim, Radio Slave, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Jordan Fields, Lello B., Danny Ocean, Federico Gandin and many more.

These two mixes are a perfect homage to one of Italy's most vital but sorely missed clubs.

Percebes Música is a Lisbon based label that has steadily released physical and digital goodies for the better part of four years. This is Produto Interno Bruto (portuguese for “Gross Domestic Product”), one of the label’s most defining documents to date. An unbounded, eclectic and ambitious project that sounds and feels like a collaborative album that was compiled and mastered by label head Ka§par.

In the presented vinyl edition, it includes tracks from the two previously released volumes of the series and even adds some exclusive content. The compilation praises the music made by underground portuguese artists by contrasting it with that of a few solid international producers, close to the label’s inner circle.

The purchase of this double 12" vinyl allows for the digital download of both PIB I and II and a bonus EP. This makes the purchase attractive and the package valuable. It also allows the listener to know more artists than those featured on the vinyl that are no less deserving of praise. A must have, crafted with care and truth in mind.

PREMIERE : Basic Soul Unit - Right Now

It’s Summer in the northern hemisphere! Despite the extremely high temperatures triggered by the global warming that will eventually bring the end of the world as we know it, it’s (still) a time to enjoy beach clubs, pool parties, and open airs – it is also the best time of the year to relish Balearic vibes on such occasions. Source of top-quality gems of the genre, the Barcelona-based label Balearic Ensemble releases its second instalment of the season, this time coming from the creative mind of Italian producer Davide Lovato aka LOVA, an artist devoted to pleasing daydreamers and slow-motion dancers out there with his sunset/sunrise-inspired melodies.

His “Colours Of The Mind” EP delivers three dusk/dawn-infused beauties – two originals and an Alternate Sundown Edit of “Elusive Realities” – made following the same formula of his previous releases on Nu Northern Soul and Dream Chimney: Dream-like melodies and picturesque chords with warming grooves and an outward-looking sense of adventure.

The track we chose to premiere, curiously, had its original name (“La Mente, Mente”) changed to “Dharma Karma”. The reasons for the change remain unknown, but it doesn’t matter, the tune is incredibly beautiful independently of its name. Shimmering guitars, nostalgic vocal yearnings, and soothing synth layers set the mood. In LOVA’s own words, “this is an invitation to decide the colours of our life and our day-by-day groove and frequencies” expressed by low-lying cadences, quivering shakers and percussive miscellanea.

It is our great honor to share with you the next expression by Hunt & Gather label founder and House music raconteur Pezzner. In his latest tale Pezzner, ever the eclecticist and vanguard, transcribes grandiose orchestral expression, Broadway vocal jazz, exalted post-disco, and Balearic tones into a format that we can all gather and dance to.

This is 'Sunrising' and it comes accompanied by two reinterpretations: a propellant electric disco romp by label partner Doza, and a sterling but jovial expression by Deep House legend (and our dear friend) Fred Everything. This release is capped off by Pezzner's playful and flowing reperformance of Herb Alpert's dancefloor classic 'Rise'.  The artwork was created by Robbie Busch, DC Comics writer and penciler.

Tim Green, as well as being a Cocoon regular, is boss of his own Disc Over Music label and has long been an assured producer of rugged grooves and club slaying synth lines. This summer he has had another busy one playing guest DJ slots all over the world and has seen support for his recent remixes of Kidnap Kid and MANDY. Now winter is coming, we are treated to more original magic from his studio.

Excellent opener ‘Empire’ is a tripped out tech growler with firmly rooted drums forming the bed off which mind bending synths slither about in lithe fashion. It makes for a mechanical groove but with those fluid synths is truly compelling and absorbing. Subtle details such as whirring space ship sounds, ditty bass stabs and colourful pad explosions all help add charm to the track, which is sure to standout on any floor.

‘Overstance’ is a more spiritual track that is doused in glowing angelic pads as well crafted synth lines rise up the sale and take you with them. The rubbery drums bubble and boil below and voices scurrying about in paranoid fashion to add to the overall impact.

It is another cultured club cut that rounds out a tight two track EP and a pitch perfect summer for the ever reliable Green.
