The Buff-tip (Phalera bucephala) is a moth of the family Notodontidae. It is found throughout Europe. This is a fairly large, heavy bodied species with a wingspan of 55-68 mm. The forewings are grey with a large prominent buff patch at the apex. As the thoracic hair is also buff, the moth looks remarkably like a broken twig at rest. The hindwings are creamy-white. This moth flies at night in June and July and sometimes comes to light, although it is not generally strongly attracted. The young larvae are gregarious, becoming solitary later. The older larva is very striking, black with white and yellow lines. It feeds on many trees and shrubs. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Zero, zilch, o, ought, naught, empty set, null, zip, nothing, nada, none. The elusive producer/DJ known as Nil (a.k.a. Neel Rao) has been quietly amassing experience matching beats since his teenage years growing up in the Bay. With professional training as an electrical engineer, computer scientist, and gourmet barista, Neel delivers intelligent productions and sagacious sets that provide enlightened entertainment to those fortunate enough to partake.

This raunchy trio of remixes bursts out of the gate with a playful re-rub from San Francisco-based tech-house producer Mountaincount (A.K.A. Taylor Harrison). The extra-large head-honcho of the Bay Area’s Mother crew maintains the original tune’s balance of naughty and nice, deftly pairing the song’s sinister melodies with a thrusting, bouncy drive. A lurching bassline hums beneath intricate percussion work, while processed instrumentals pluck away in counterpoint with Glitterus’ provocative vocal play.

Next up is a “Wemix” from Wentworth (A.K.A. Joe Gray), another producer from the Mother stable. Wentworth embraces the dark side on his edit, stripping out most of the source material’s vocal work in favor of haunting chords and heavy kicks. True to form, Gray delivers plenty of punch in his percussive do-over, channeling the grim simplicity of way-past-midnight industrial techno into coital union with Hussyclub’s dark, throbbing electroklash.

Ian Bender rounds out this tantalizing triptych with a sensual adventure clocking in at over seven minutes. The SF-based youngster builds things slowly, starting with a brooding intro that morphs into an acid-inflected electro odyssey near the tune’s halfway point. Bits of Glitterus’ vocals pepper the proceedings, while squelching synth lines vibrate the listener’s eardrums to climax.

Wentworth's remix from Pixel Memory's latest release. As the drummer for Pixel Memory, Wentworth knows this tracks intimately. His always percussive, dance floor production is immediately recognizable as he rips Guardian up into a dark, room shaker.
