Earl Jeffers returns to his own Mélange imprint with a massive splash. Two soulful house heaters and an alternative mix. But the first of these dancefloor destroyers features the ever-prolific Kaidi Tatham on flute and guitar. 

If you’re not familiar with Cariff’s Earl Jeffers, there’s an ocean of brilliant music to catch up on. Stacks of releases under his own name, and aliases Chesus and Metabeats, on labels like MCDE, Fat City, and Local Talk. Not forgetting his own label, Mélange Records.

Earl has jumped confidently from house to hip hop, jungle, jazz. library music and more, collaborating on the way with artists such as Byron The Aquarius, Action Bronson, Kamaal Williams and K15. Moreover, as one half of Darkhouse Family with Don Leisure, Earl fuses hip hop production sensibilities with live soul & jazz and yet more notable collaborators. 

Better-known for his keyboard wizardry and highest quality broken jazz productions, don’t sleep on Kaidi Tatham on the flute OR guitar. On both he lays it down with the same finesse and feel for what the song needs. As Earl adds, “pleasure to once again work with one of the best to do it! Mr Kaidi Tatham”. 

Artwork is provided by frequent collaborator and good friend of Earl’s, Ral Duke. Ral has been behind artwork for the likes of Griselda Records (Westside Gunn, Conway, Benny the Butcher), Alchemist, and Ghostface Killah, among many others.

On the flip we find title track “Higher”, featuring vocals from Lloyd Everitt, alongside an alternative mix of the same. ‘Higher’ is released on June 12.

As she looked around people came and went, faceless and blurry they were but mere reflections which moved in between the dark and shadowy spaces. The concrete upon which she tread was glazed in water from the rain which had poured all day long. She could almost catch a glimpse of herself when looking at her feet in the shine of the damp. She kept on walking through the night until she saw the light again once more. It was safer that way. 

Books is the next artist to release music on XVI. He delivers three tracks of elegant, enchanting house music which accompany the dark nights of winter very well.

Never a dull moment on Neroli: after a string of releases from the likes of Fred P, DEGO, Patrice Scott, Chaos in the CBD and Trinidadian Deep it’s now the turn of PATRICK GIBIN together with KAIDI TATHAM.
The duo has been already responsible for some heat on Patrick’s own Blend It label, and here they are teaming up once again for a whole EP. This time they enroll New Jersey majesty JOSH MILAN [of Blaze/Element of Life fame] on vocal duty [with extra the help of Dawn Tallman on backing vocals] and they turn the song ‘Love To The World’ into a modern day Classic…..Anthem Alert!
But there’s more evidence of brilliance from Gibin and Tatham with the boogie ‘Groove on’ and JazzFunk House joint ‘Don’t Be Rude’ where mr keyboard Kaidi lets loose on Bass and Guitar!

Flumo and ANMA Records join forces once again - this time for a collaborative project between UK based Contours and Yadava. Cosmic Echoes was built over numerous jam sessions fusing live percussion, bass, drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings to create a raw EP full of soul and warmth.

‘Start First Finish Last’ opens up with smooth keys and alluring bass solo. The drum and percussion interplay keeps the up beat rhythm flowing, allowing for the bass to enhance on a Balearic and laid-back dance groove. ‘
‘Udu' takes the vibe on a more beat-driven road, with interlocking Kit and Udu patterns, floating keys and rolling synth arpeggios cutting in and out of the groove. ‘Speaking Through Broken Shells’, gets back on the bass and drum heavy interaction, with lots of influences from UK jazz scene.
 
The B-side starts off with a more familiar house groove. ‘Low Slung’, is a nod to the eyes down moments on the dance floor, with raw hats and shakers swirling around synth swells and heavy synth bass for introspective bliss.
‘Cascades’ swaps over to an atmospheric soundscapes, with plenty of stereo play and rich sound quality, making it easy to get lost in a jungle of flutes, keys and rain-line percussion notes.
 
NIAN’s remix of Cascades, takes the atmosphere up a beat and subs the rolling bass with broken beat rhythm, while Skygaze remix, of the same track, adds liquidity and reshapes the atmospheric sound into a more dance floor orienting mix.
