Dirty Old Man

A suite, in classical music, is an ordered set of instrumental music. Suites originated as early as the 14th century and were originally grouped together by dance styles to be performed by a group of musicians at various social settings. As time progressed, movements were often linked by mood, key and tempo/rhythmic style. At the center of all group/multi person music performances is the conductor. A conductor is a person who oversees the progression and interpretation of a performance of music for an orchestra, opera, chorus or any ensemble work. Conductors lay the organizational groundwork for the musicians and the listeners. Even though the music is written by a composer, the conductor has direct control over interpretation, flow and progression of a piece of music. I was so personally inspired by the role and the responsibility of the conductor; Taking what is given to them, whether it comes chaotic, hard to understand, foreign, not aligned with who they are, strange, scary, intimidating and making it their sole responsibility to bring out the beauty, passion, and intensity so that the musicians can play it and listeners can connect and digest. Our lives are composed of moments that we often do not have control over. They can be chaotic, traumatic, intense, uncertain and intimidating combined with moments that are beautiful, rewarding, satisfying and self-gratifying and the sum of all these moments, for me, is this project. Suite in A is a composition of all the thoughts, experiences, plans of my life that happen to me but I am the conductor of this body of work. I’ve determined the pacing, the organizational structure and am clear on how things will be interpreted and you are the conductor of yours too. No matter how broken and it parts it comes to you or through you, you are the conductor and you can make it beautiful and digestible.
