I Did It For Love

On Canticle of Innocent, a dark and ethereal dark ambient suite, Motja translates the echo of a collective tragedy into sound. Inspired by Martha Graham’s play Canticle for Innocent Comedians — and her poetics of spiritual devastation — the album unfolds as a wordless hymn, where each track serves as a sonic meditation on the Palestinian collective trauma, guided not by a narrative structure, but by evocations that rise like images in a dream.

Composed mainly using processed field recordings and the SOMA Terra, an electroacoustic instrument designed to respond sensitively to pressure and touch, Canticle of Innocent emerges from a physical and intuitive interaction with sound. Unplanned, but “listened to” and modulated in real-time, the sonic material retains a raw, tactile, almost living quality. Synthesis here is not about construction but evocation. Canticle of Innocent is built upon slow drones, stretched harmonics, and layered textures that emerge and dissolve. Motja’s work does not seek explanation but empathy: an attempt to restore the dignity of feeling to that which cannot be understood, only contemplated from afar.

Composing through deep listening, Motja transforms Graham’s spiritual legacy into liquid, meditative sound, blending contemporary minimalism, ritual ambient, and atmospheric noise. A wordless requiem for those who remain — and for those who watch.

Dakotsu Iida trained under Takahama Kyoshi, and was chief editor of the poetry journal Unmo until his death. His son Ryuta Iida, a famous haiku poet himself, took over as the editor of Unmo after his father’s death.
