At the foot of the cross

This is what the journey is all about. Well, not what, rather whom the journey is all about. Yes, it’s a journey to heaven, but also a journey to be with the One who claimed to be God and proved it by what he did. I often hear people claim that Jesus was not God and seek to prove that from the New Testament. They fail to really understand what is going on, and fail to understand Jesus’ words in the content of the Old Testament. The Jewish leaders of his day understood exactly what Jesus claimed and wanted to stone him for it! Thankfully in the New Testament we don’t have a Jesus who merely claimed to be God, but also proved it by the healing the sick, raising the dead and himself rising from the dead by His own authority. Messiah, Jesus, Lord!!

As we walk the way of the word of the God who saved us we struggle with what is within our own hearts as we seek to live obediently. At the same time we find ourselves living in a hostile world in which there are those who will often oppose us and the God who saved us. The Christian however looks to God in these situations and longs for Him to deal with those who are ultimately against the Lord Jesus. We long for the Kingdom to come. Our job is to live by grace in obedience to the Word and take up our cross and follow the One who also walked a road of suffering.

gimel: Stranger on this Earth

One might argue that this song is a bit intense. Well, in ‘Take’ I’ve tried to capture something of the struggle with sin that is the experience of everyone on the journey of true faith in Christ. Our walk is after all with One who is pure and holy above all, it is only right that those who know Him should seek holiness themselves. 

Paradoxically, in the Christian walk, a deep longing and struggle for holiness is right at home with a peace and trust that comes from knowing Christ Himself. The verse and chorus of this song seek to convey those two aspects of our faith. So an intense prayer to “drive out the night”, is perfectly at home with “You're my hope for I know the One I trust”.

May the Lord Jesus himself help and inspire us all to walk in holiness before God as we trust completely in Him.

When we are discouraged and laid low it is the God of the Bible who through His word strengthens and encourages us to walk victoriously in his ways. He keeps us, teaches us, strengthens us, and empowers us to walk in the way of his word... It is He strengthens us to live obediently even our struggles seem to be overwhelm us. That is why it so important to open up the Bible when we feel discouraged and that we don't have the strength to continue. The Lord Jesus knows just the word to sustain those who are weary. cf. Isaiah 50:4

We follow a Christ who suffered. As a core part of the Christian life is to be made into the image of Jesus, it should not surprise us when we suffer and go though hardships. The amazing thing is that these hardships result in making us more like Jesus in many other ways too. But it is not just in our own lives, others too are encouraged to fear God and follow more faithfully when they see us faithfully persevere under trial.

As the journey progresses, no matter how hard the struggles and trials, the love of the Christian for Jesus Christ continues to grow. As Peter says, "though we have not seen Him, we love him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy". Along with that love it is perfectly natural that praise for him might also grow too. 

When we think of what he has done for us how can we not give Him our highest praise? Dying on the cross and rising from the dead to give us who believe in Him life beyond the grave, forgiving us time and time again and showing us mercy every day. Only He is worthy to receive our highest praise!

A true grasp of the wonder of the bitter-sweet cross gives the desire to see others understand it's message. Mercy, love, and courage from God give us the encouragement to get out into the world to seek to tell people of the all-victorious Christ. "Lord please shine through us!"

Living in relationship with God in obedience to His word is not something we can do in our strength. Left to our own ways we would wander from Him. He is the One who leads and guides us and keeps us walking in His ways. He is the One who gives us life.He gives us life by grace through Christ and strengthens us by His word.

Sinner's Prayer

Our sufferings have a purpose if we belong to Christ. They serve to make us more like Him! In the New Testament Peter writes: "[Trials] have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." Sometimes from the midst of suffering we cry out "why!", thankfully for us there is always an answer...

Created To Know And Love You As King

Living in a world hostile to God it can be tempting to want to retreat into a Christian ghetto and let the world get on with their lives without Christ, or to the other extreme water down our own commitment to the God who saved us to avoid being persecuted. His unfailing love for us however produces in us a love for Him and His word. It is right that this love should drive and motivate us to speak out for Him giving an answer for the hope that we have in Christ, even to those who openly oppose Him.

Psalm 79: God the nations have invaded

There are times on the journey when we seem to lose our way. Love for other things creep into our lives and our love for the One who saved us cools. It is a wonderful thing that in times like these the Lord patiently calls and urges us through His word back into fellowship with Himself. This song is from one believer to another urging them to return to the Lord, to love Him, honour Him, serve Him and walk with Him. The fact that the Lord Jesus will return in his power and glory as Saviour and Judge should be an encouragement to us all to return to Him and live. Hebrews 9: 27-28, Malachi 3

Return to Him and live

When the Christian life is tough, God gives us comfort through His word. Even when the world around us is rejecting Christ, ignoring Christ, belittling Christ, we can know God's very real comfort. This is especially true when we feed on the words of scripture, reading them, meditating on them and singing them. It is then, even in the darkness night of suffering, that we can know in a very real sense His comfort. His comfort helps us then to live for Christ, despite being surrounded by others who reject our very precious Saviour.

If we realise our deepest needs and rightly understand what God has done for us in Christ through the cross we naturally will see Him as that which is most precious to us. He is all we need and full of amazing love towards us. As it says in Psalm 119 v64, the earth is full of His love. That is why in good times or bad times our hearts will be filled with praise towards Him, our lives will be based on His word and we will enjoy fellowship with others who also love Christ. He is our all sufficient Lord!

We can be tempted to think that suffering should just not happen to us, especially if we claim to be loved by the Creator of the Universe. We think that suffering is contradictory to there being a loving God who is totally good and all powerful. The writer of Psalm 119 disagrees. He sees that suffering has brought spiritual blessing into his life: "Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word" (v67 see also v71). He concludes that it is the very fact that God is good that suffering should play a part in his life. "You are good, and what you do is good". God is good, and he is making us more like Christ even though allowing suffering in our lives.

There isn't a day goes by when I am not grateful that the God of the Bible is a God who forgives. James 4: 6 puts it like this: “But he gives us more grace”. Just when you think you’ve blown it for the last time and that all grace has run out, God, through the Lord Jesus, forgives and gives more grace.

That’s what this song is all about. The amazing gift of the forgiveness of sins! But just as amazing is that God doesn’t just forgive, but is at work in us to help us stop sinning and that He has promised us a day when we will be completely rescued from the presence and power of sin. I’m looking forward to that day very much! Until then, there is more grace for the rebel who returns and the humble who believe!

More Grace

In the first verses of the Psalm we are confronted with the fact that the LORD who saves is a God who gives commands to be obeyed. "Blessed are those whose ways are blameless", blameless not here being sinless perfection, but a heart turned towards walking the ways of the LORD. It's only with the grace of the LORD that we might possibly be able to do this. Obedience is therefore the blessing He gives to those He has saved. As Christian believers, the blessing we are given is a heart and life that lives in submission to the commands of our Lord Jesus who is the LORD.

At the beginning of the second section of Psalm 119, having longed for the obedience that comes from the grace of God who saves, the writer of the Psalm asks the obvious question: How can I live like that? The Psalmist finds that answer to living in a way that pleases the God of the word is by storing that very word up in our hearts and relying on His help to live it out. "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."
