The 1st of April next month marks two years since the birth of our imprint mould.audio. For this occasion we have the pleasure of presenting the second instalment of on our Collector's Series on the the label which was launched in November 2021.
[mldcs002] embodies Ganev's @rbngnv evolution into a deeper creative mindset and technical workflow. The project consists of four nocturnal constructs, which all together form a sonic trek which serves as grounding tool for the body and the mind and thus continues the plot from the first instalment on the Collector’s Series [mldcs001].

The first ambient piece “Transition” serves as a prelude to the EP and the inspiration behind it is a ambient project made in 2003 by Virginia Zaharieva. The heart of the project, called House of Medusa, is a Roman Water Cistern in Istanbul’s Basilica, a place which gives us the vivid feeling of distance and space. It creates the sense of residing on a windy interplanetary station, or in catacombs where people and otherworldly creatures roam. A place which compliments the ones who are brave enough to meet their fears through embracing the unveiled shadows lurking in them to eventually illuminate a space for individual expression.

The second piece “Circuits” unfolds the sense of space created in the overture and evolves into sonic formations inspired by elemental natural disasters such as thunderstorms, earthquakes or witnessing magnetic or electro-static occurrences on a bigger scale. A combinational blend of poly-rhythmic structures serve as soil for sonic elements which symbolize such forces in the distance which are beyond our control. Thus the piece explores a realm in which there is a relationship between what can be “expected” and this which can not be foreseen, relating to the same occurrences in nature. Predictable, and yet only to an extent.

The third piece “Remnant” is about the archetypal journey of the hero: contrasts, challenges, losses, sacrifices and victories.
Remnant reflects what is left after all obstacles and what makes us worthy of an existence in a better world.

The fourth and last piece of the EP is a composition which also uses contrast in search of equilibrium.
“Navigator” is a ticket to another constellation of sounds, and with its tribal feel and warm low-end groove, it prepares us for a giant leap.

Trauma Collective returns to shock to your system on their fifth release, which comes courtesy of Spain’s Rafael M. Espinosa aka Geistform. The Barcelona-based artist, also known for his exploits under the Univac alias, has crafted a singular style that exists at the interzone of IDM, digital noise and electro and having earned him releases on Pi Electronics, Femur and Hands Productions in recent years. 

Espinosa executes five programs in sonic warfare on the Antena EP, all sounding akin to complex bitstream amplification. A multi-level barrage of frequencies play offense on opening cut “Proxima B”, which sets the theme for more widescreen pulsations that gash the senses, as heard on the syntax error of “Note Repeat” and building up to a climax on the monochromatic soundstage of “Norc” - a jagged and angular exploration in bass artefacts and static redux. Exclusive to this digital release is fifth track “Impedancia”, once again rendered in dissonant hi-res sounds and underpinned by glitched and clipped microrhythms. 

Since unleashing the austere techno of Birmingham legend Mick Harris (as Monrella) and hometown hero Kwartz on unsuspecting ears, the Madrid-based collective has now ventured into more experimental spheres, as heard on the off-kilter mentalism of ASC’s Loop Research and the brooding atmosphere of Makunaimadama’s limited cassette release last year. Antena is the logical progression for the label’s next chapter, where it continues to push the threshold of electronic music’s outer limits.

Sublunar owner Sciahri and electroacoustic musician Emanuele Porcinai (WSR / Aperture) join after six years of silence with a collection of newly developed sounds. I could feel the mana running warm under my skin as the cold desert breeze swept through the valley. The black cloaks of my brethren fluttered like whips in the wind as our caravan slithered on through the desolate fields that had pulled us so far away from our crypt. The sun was setting and with a cry, I ordered us into a halt.  

We were very close now, we could all feel it. Our dragons had been silent for nearly three days and the tension inside of our horde was growing increasingly fierce. I looked down into my hands and saw no trace of the strong fists that had once tamed these giant scaulding creatures. A lifetime flashed before my eyes as I read the scars and wrinkles that ran endlessly across my palms like runes. Then, my eyes jolted toward the horizon as a clap of thunder broke the silence. We all watched as the sun swelled rapidly and we knew that the time had finally come. 

By the pounding fists of Ba'al. 
To the roars of our burning children. 
Death was coming to release us all.

This latest installment in the Stroboscopic saga once again calls upon the talents of two label veterans; both having released EPs on the label while also contributing to its five-year retrospective series. This new split release shared between Kangding Ray and Rrose is a fitting partnership: after all, both individuals are known for advancing the progress of rhythmic electronic music while drawing from creative influences and movements that weren’t typically associated with the ‘techno’ lineage until these producers made such links possible.
Kangding Ray’s side, “Ardent,” is a gripping and propulsive piece formed in the same spirit as the songs from his latest full-length, Cory Arcane. Dramatic and cinematic from beginning to end, it makes the listener and/or dancer feel like a highly alert martial artist slicing and kicking through a host of liquid-metallic adversaries, with disciplined synth bass and rich melodic swells as defensive weapons. Slick and accessible without ever being conventional, “Ardent” convincingly collages stuttering and minced sequences together with steady percolation and smooth, brassy undertones - three different sonic ‘states of matter’ that unify to make Kangding Ray’s musical
imagination into an almost tactile thing.
The entity known as Rrose, meanwhile, presents a track here that reaffirms that artist’s expert skill at crafting perfectly symmetrical and mesmerizing musical palindromes (a skill that can be seen on other standout Stroboscopic Artefacts tracks like “The Stare,” and also on Rrose’s interpretation of James Tenney’s classic palindrome “Koan [Having Never Written A Note For Percussion]).” The track in question, “Swallows,” is appropriately named, impressing upon listeners like the sonic equivalent of a massive searchlight which, once it lands upon its target, swallows or vacuums up the listener’s conscious attention. This elegantly arching set of multiplying and disintegrating waveforms rewards those with the courage to return its insistent gaze and to “play at maximum” volume to reveal the wealth of detail concealed within its deceptive minimalism.
With its scientific exactness and sheer originality, this split is an essential listen not just for fans of either artist, but also for any seeker after new perceptual revelations.
