"You can always rely on the Midnight Riot label to pick up a party. Seriously they'd get people dancing in a morgue. Here label favourite Ziggy Phunk turns in four sweet and tasty reworks of obscure 80s dance cuts. "Give It To You" is a soft focus helium-voiced disco cut that puts The Bee Gees to shame, "Some Kinda Lover" is nearly seven minutes of tight and sharp 80s electro-soul, "Sneak Preview" is a shiny filtered pop gem that bears more than a passing resemblance to early Madonna, and "Stand Up" is a sped up celebration of guitars and trumpets".

Last year Gomma was approached to rework some songs from the legendary Casablanca Records catalogue. Of course we said yes. So me, Telonius, Munk and The Phenomenal Handclap Band did four new interpretations of classic tracks by Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder, Skatt Brothers, Stephanie Mills and from the Flashdance soundtrack!

For the project we needed a very special vocalist. There was only one who has the right understanding of history, the perfect dirty approach and enough soul: Peaches. And she was totally enthusiastic about that.

"Casablanca Reworks" will be out on 13 January 2012 on Gomma.

Originally released in March 2006 and virtually impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, BBE are excited to announce a special ten year anniversary edition of the classic Visioneers album Dirty Old Hip Hop. Brainchild of 4hero and Reinforced Records founder Marc Mac, the Visioneers project first appeared on a series of limited edition 7” vinyl releases. Marc began re-imagining his favourite hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst also re-introducing the excitement and musicianship of the records from which they were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born. Drawing on the musical talents of Somatik and drummer Luke Parkhouse, both regulars on the 4hero sessions, this largely instrumental album also featured stunning performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice. An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms, weaving the two together until even the most ardent purist will find it hard to define any space between. Dirty Old Hip Hop was shortlisted for Gilles Peterson‘s coveted Worldwide album of the Year award in 2006.

"The Drop (feat. Joe Dukie)" by The Nextmen

“The Drop” starts out with a percussive drum loop and a little bit of clavinet to get the hips rolling, rather than just rocking. As Joe Dukie swings in with his caramel vocals, velvety and rich in timbre, the whole environment of the song clicks into place and we begin to get where it’s going. “The Drop” not only alludes to Joe dropping this relationship that’s messing with his head so bad but more literally that he’s got the inside scoop. He’s figured out all the messiness his significant other is spreading around, and he knows how to counter it now.

It doesn’t always come as a total shock when you decide your lover is a piece of shit, ergo Joe’s nonchalant, totally-controlled inflection through the lyrics, which are nonchalant in their own right. Nothing about this song screams urgency; its groove is slow-burning and low-flying, hugging the ground and rolling smoothly. It’s not offensive, it’s not brash or mean, or even erratic: he’s just simply making it known that he’s got the drop, and the buck stops here. Though it’s not always cut-and-dried, such as when he sings “Oh you don’t get me high no more, but I still love you just the same.” Oh? You do? Even though you got the drop?

This general matter-of-fact frankness resonates with the general public: remember CeeLo’s “Fuck You” How could you forget? The cultural attitude is incredibly meta now, focusing on thoughts that scream I-don’t-think-about-you-anymore-but-I’m-still-gonna-say-it because that embodies and inspires confidence that’s inherently powerful. And who doesn’t want to feel that?
